BMW iX Review

The market for Executive-level pure electric SUVs has seen increasing options in recent years. However, most models either focus on performance while compromising on range or emphasize comfort but lack certain features. Launched in July, the 2025 BMW iX xDrive45 Sport, priced at RM 425,800, offers an impressive range of 602km while retaining BMW’s signature driving dynamics, along with almost all mainstream smart features as standard. Could it become the "balanced choice" in this price segment? This time, through a static experience and dynamic test drive, we will verify whether its real-world performance matches the on-paper specifications.
From its exterior, the 2025 iX xDrive45 Sport continues the minimalist design of the iX series, with smooth yet not bulky overall lines. The front features a moderately sized kidney grille that is not excessively exaggerated, while the blue accents and closed design clearly mark its identity as an electric vehicle. On both sides, the LED headlights are sharply styled, with daytime running lights featuring a distinctive "angel eye" variation, offering high recognition when lit. The car’s side proportions are well-balanced; the 4965mm length and 3000mm wheelbase ensure a spacious interior. Its 21-inch wheels fitted with 255/50 R21 tires strike a balance between visual appeal and everyday usability. The rear design is relatively simple, with LED taillights adopting a horizontal layout, echoing the headlights. The rear bumper’s diffuser-like design adds a touch of sportiness. Overall, the style suits the steadiness of an Executive-class vehicle while retaining the futuristic feel of an electric car.
Upon opening the door, the interior impresses with its premium feel. The dashboard is wrapped in large amounts of soft-touch materials, complemented by metal accents and piano-black trim, creating a notable sense of luxury. The 12.3-inch fully digital instrument panel and 14.9-inch curved central touchscreen are joined together to form the visual centerpiece of the cabin. The system operates smoothly, supports touch and voice controls, and allows easy access to commonly used functions like navigation and multimedia. The multi-functional steering wheel features controls for the driving assistance systems on the left and multimedia adjustments on the right, with a clear and responsive button feel. A head-up display (HUD) is standard, showing key information like speed and navigation, reducing the need to glance down at the instrument panel. In terms of seating, the front seats support electric adjustments and have a memory function, while the leather upholstery offers good support and comfort for long drives. The rear row is spacious; a 175cm passenger sitting inside will have more than two fists of legroom and one fist of headroom. The almost flat middle floor ensures the comfort of the middle passenger even when fully loaded with three occupants. For storage, the space under the front center console features an open storage compartment, while the central armrest box is quite spacious. The door panel storage slots can fit large bottles. The trunk offers a 500L capacity, sufficient for several suitcases, while the rear seats can be folded in a 60:40 split, accommodating the transport of larger items.
In the dynamic driving aspect, the 2025 iX xDrive45 Sport delivers as expected. It is equipped with dual permanent magnet synchronous motors on both the front and rear axles, providing a combined power output of 300kW (408PS) and a total torque of 700N·m, with an official 0-100km/h acceleration time of 5.1 seconds. In actual driving, the power response during take-off is immediate, with a noticeable sense of acceleration even with light throttle inputs. Mid-range and high-end acceleration remain robust, and during high-speed overtaking, simply stepping on the throttle more deeply results in quick power delivery. The car offers ECO, COMFORT, and SPORT driving modes. In ECO mode, the power delivery is relatively smooth, suitable for daily commuting. In SPORT mode, the power response becomes more aggressive, and the steering wheel feels heavier, providing a sportier driving experience. The chassis features a front double-wishbone and rear multi-link independent suspension, tuned for comfort while maintaining good support. When driving over speed bumps or uneven roads, the suspension effectively absorbs most of the vibrations, ensuring passengers feel minimal jolts. In corners, the body roll is well-controlled, and the steering is precise, inspiring confidence in the driver. As an electric vehicle, its noise control is excellent; at speeds under 60km/h, external noise is almost imperceptible. Even at high speeds, wind and tire noise remain within an acceptable range and do not disrupt in-car conversations.
In terms of range and charging, it is equipped with a 100.6kWh lithium battery, with an official range of 602km. We tested it under mixed road conditions, including city congestion, highway cruising, and suburban roads, with air conditioning and music on the entire time. The final range achievement rate was approximately 85%, allowing it to actually cover about 510km, which is sufficient for daily use over a week. Fast charging takes 0.56 hours (about 34 minutes) to charge from 10% to 80%, and slow charging takes 5 hours. It’s very convenient to recharge using fast-charging stations in malls or highway service areas. The driving assistance system comes standard with ACC adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, and active braking. ACC can automatically follow traffic on highways, freeing your feet; the lane departure warning system alerts and slightly corrects the direction when the vehicle deviates from the lane, increasing driving safety.
Compared to similar models, the 2025 iX xDrive45 Sport has obvious advantages. Compared to the 2024 iX xDrive50 Sport, its price is RM 40,000 lower. Although its power is slightly less, it has a longer range and similar configurations; compared to other Executive-level pure electric SUVs at the same price point, it has better brand influence, driving quality, and more comprehensive features. Overall, this car is suitable for families seeking balanced performance, requiring enough space and a comfortable riding experience, as well as decent driving pleasure and long range, while also having certain expectations for the brand and features. If you are looking for a pure electric SUV capable of balancing daily commuting and long-distance travel, the 2025 BMW iX xDrive45 Sport is worth considering.
