User Review

With the increasing demand for balanced performance in the family sedan market, the mid-size car segment has always been a focus for Malaysian consumers. The 1998 Audi A4 public, as a classic model in this class, was the choice of many quality-conscious users, thanks to the German brand’s craftsmanship and solid mechanical quality. This time, we provide a static and dynamic review to reproduce this car's performance during its release, offering references for classic car enthusiasts or potential buyers.

In terms of exterior design, the 1998 Audi A4 public continued Audi's simplistic family style at that time, with smooth overall lines and slightly angular shapes. The front fascia adopted the iconic trapezoidal grille, coupled with rectangular halogen headlights on both sides, giving it high recognizability. Two muscular lines on the hood extend from the grille to the A-pillar, adding strength to the front. The car's side profile is well-proportioned with a waistline running from the front fender to the rear, complemented by 15-inch multi-spoke aluminum alloy wheels, making it simple yet stable. The rear design is relatively conservative, with rectangular taillights aligning with the body lines. The Audi logo in the center of the trunk lid conceals the license plate mount beneath it. The overall design aligns with the mainstream aesthetics of mid-sized cars from the 1990s, without excessive decorative elements, but the detailed handling reflects the meticulousness of German engineering.

Stepping inside, the cabin design prioritizes practicality, with predominantly dark tones accented by some silver trims. The dashboard features a layered design, with the audio system on top and the climate control area below. The physical buttons are laid out clearly, and the knobs and buttons have moderate damping, providing a good tactile feel during operation. The seats are upholstered in fabric, offering decent support. The front seats support manual adjustments, including front-back movement, backrest angle, and height adjustment (driver's side). In terms of configuration, this model is equipped with basic features like electrically adjustable side mirrors, four electric windows, and a manual air conditioning system. Some versions even come with a single-disc CD player. Although it lacks modern smart screens or connected car systems, it was considered mainstream in its class at the time. Regarding space, the dimensions of the vehicle are 4522mm×1765mm×1423mm, with a wheelbase of 2615mm. Front-row seating provides ample space, with a 175cm tall passenger having a headroom clearance of about one fist. Rear legroom is about two fists, with headroom at one fist, making it suitable for everyday family use. For storage, the front central armrest box and door storage compartments offer moderate capacity, and the trunk has a standard capacity of 440L. Rear seats can be folded down to expand the trunk space, offering strong practicality.

In terms of power, the 1998 Audi A4 public is equipped with a 1.8L naturally aspirated engine, delivering a maximum power of 92kW (125 horsepower) and a peak torque of 170N·m. It comes with either a 5-speed manual transmission or a 4-speed automatic transmission. During actual driving, power delivery during launch is smooth, and the throttle response is not overly aggressive, but it is adequate for daily commuting. Acceleration performance is satisfactory below 60km/h, but it becomes somewhat sluggish when accelerating above 80km/h, requiring deeper throttle input for overtaking. As for handling, the steering is precise with minimal play. The suspension consists of front MacPherson independent suspension and rear torsion beam semi-independent suspension (some models feature multi-link suspension), tuned for comfort while retaining some road feel. When driving on bumpy roads, the suspension absorbs most minor vibrations, keeping the vehicle stable. During cornering, body roll is kept within an acceptable range, demonstrating overall balanced performance. As for fuel consumption, manual models offer a combined fuel consumption of approximately 8.5L/100km, while automatic models average around 9.5L/100km, which is reasonable for 1.8L engine vehicles of that time. Noise control is effective at speeds under 60km/h, providing a relatively quiet cabin. However, wind and tire noise become gradually noticeable as speeds exceed 80km/h, which was typical for cars in this class at the time.

Overall, the core advantages of the 1998 Audi A4 public lie in its solid chassis tuning, meticulous craftsmanship, and balanced space performance. Compared to the BMW 3 Series (E46) of the same era, its comfort is more prominent; compared to the Mercedes-Benz C-Class (W203), it is more affordable. This car is suitable for families who value practicality and quality, especially for those who appreciate classic German cars and have modest demands for features. As a model from more than 20 years ago, it may lack the smart configurations of modern cars, but its mechanical quality remains reliable, making it a classic mid-size car worth reminiscing about.

Pros
Chassis stability is strong; it doesn't float when passing through water puddles on rainy days, and the body remains stable at high speeds.
Exterior design is classic and appealing, with a strong retro feel; the waistline and streamlined body increase its head-turning rate.
Interior texture is excellent; suede seats are comfortable, and wood-grain panels add a sense of quality.
Cons
The air conditioner cools slowly and occasionally malfunctions, requiring early activation or tapping to function properly
Power is slightly insufficient when climbing hills, requiring deep acceleration to keep up with the car ahead
Lacks modern active safety features, with safety performance lagging compared to contemporary models

Last Saturday, I drove my wife and kids to the orchard at the foot of Genting Highlands to pick durians. Just after passing the Kuala Lumpur Outer Ring Road, we encountered heavy rain. Even with the wipers working crazily, it was hard to see the road. The old A4's chassis is really stable; it didn’t float when passing through water puddles. However, when climbing uphill, I had to press the accelerator deeper to catch up with the car in front. When parked at the orchard entrance, a few Malay uncles came over to take a look, saying that this silver-gray waistline looks even better than the new cars nowadays. Deduct one point for performance, after all, it's a car that's nearly thirty years old. Climbing hills is slightly underpowered, but as for the appearance, full marks, no doubt about it.

Previously, I drove the older model Toyota Corolla, a car that was like a "moving tin box" - the interior hard plastic felt rough to the touch, and its appearance was downright outdated. After switching to the '98 Audi A4 public, I finally understood what a "premium car" really feels like—its interior suede seats feel as soft as petting a cat, and the wooden trim panels reflect a warm glow under the Kuala Lumpur sunset, 5 stars wouldn't be enough; the streamlined body shape, parked next to the old buildings of Petaling Street, screams retro style and garners more looks than the neighbor's new Proton. For safety, I'd give it 4 stars. After all, it's a car from the '90s, lacking modern features like automatic braking. However, when driving at high speeds on the Penang Bridge, the car remains so steady it's like it's glued to the road, way better than the Corolla, which swayed like a boat. Though it has a small downside: the air conditioning is slow to cool down. In Kuala Lumpur's 35-degree weather, you have to start the engine and let the aircon run for 5 minutes beforehand, or stepping inside feels like entering a sauna. On weekend trips up to Genting Highlands, the 1.8T engine delivers more power than I'd expected. When overtaking, you can hear the turbo's "hissing" sound as you press the gas pedal—much stronger than the Corolla's 1.6L. During the morning rush hour on Jalan Bukit Bintang when stuck in traffic, the steering wheel's weight feels just perfect, and setting it to neutral and pulling the handbrake is effortless—much easier than driving my friend's old Mercedes. Overall, this car in Malaysia is both prestigious and practical. Apart from the slow air conditioning, I'm satisfied with everything else—after all, it's a "German gentleman," and a little temper is only to be expected!

This old buddy handles incredibly well! It takes corners so steadily as if it's glued to the ground, driving it feels more exciting than many of the newer cars.

The first time driving it uphill, a slight push on the throttle and it surged up effortlessly, the power of the old car is surprisingly strong!

This old buddy has been running for almost twenty years, steady as a rock on the highway even in the rain. You can fit three big guys in the back without feeling cramped. The only issue is the air conditioning, which sometimes acts up and needs a couple of knocks to cool properly—but in this weather, as long as it blows cold air, I'm satisfied!
