In recent years, the competition in Malaysia's mid-sized car market has remained fiercely intense. Various brands have continuously emphasized value-for-money, configuration upgrades, and spatial performance. However, entry-level models of classic luxury brands are still a "sentimental choice" for many consumers — after all, the chassis quality and design heritage of German cars are reasons enough for many to pay a premium. The 2000 Audi A4 public we test-drove today, as one of the representatives of the luxury mid-sized car market at the time, had its core selling points in the craftsmanship of the German brand, balanced power output, and practical space design. The purpose of this test drive is to revisit this classic model from a modern perspective in terms of static experience and dynamic performance to see if it can still meet the needs of consumers looking for second-hand luxury cars.

From an exterior perspective, the 2000 Audi A4 public adopts the family-style "large grille" intake design, paired with sharp-looking halogen headlights on both sides, giving the front a high degree of recognizability with a typical steady style of German luxury cars. The side lines of the body are smooth, with a waistline running from the front to the rear, paired with 16-inch multi-spoke aluminum alloy wheels, giving a visually elongated and harmonious appearance. At the rear, the taillights are designed to match the body color, with a simple and elegant shape, while the dual exhaust layout at the bottom adds a touch of sportiness. In terms of lighting, although the entire lineup is not equipped with LED light sources, the halogen headlights offered mainstream performance at the time, sufficient for everyday use.

Entering the cabin, the overall interior layout primarily uses dark tones, extensively employing soft-touch materials, complemented by a small amount of wooden trim, which provided an outstanding sense of quality among models of the same class at the time. The center console design is simple and practical, equipped with a monochrome LCD screen, supporting Bluetooth connection and basic multimedia functions. The seats are wrapped in genuine leather, and the front seats support electric adjustments and lumbar support, offering a comfortable seating experience. In terms of configuration, the car comes with automatic air conditioning, an electric sunroof, rear air vents, and front seat heating. While it lacks the smart connectivity systems found in modern vehicles, its practical features sufficiently meet daily needs.

In terms of space performance, the dimensions of the 2000 Audi A4 public are 4547×1772×1427mm, with a wheelbase of 2650mm. The front seating area is spacious, providing sufficient comfort for a person with a height of 180 cm, leaving one fist of headroom after adjusting posture. The rear seat space is average, offering about two fists of legroom and one fist of headroom, making it adequate for regular family use. In terms of storage capacity, the door-side storage compartments can hold two bottles of mineral water, and the central armrest box and glove box also provide practical storage options. The trunk has a standard capacity of 442 liters, with the rear seats supporting folding in split ratios, expanding the capacity to 827 liters, which is sufficient for long trips or transporting larger items.

As for power, the 2000 Audi A4 public is equipped with a 1.8T turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum power of 110kW (150Ps) and a maximum torque of 210N·m. It is paired with a 5-speed manual transmission or a CVT continuously variable transmission. During actual driving, the power response in the initial stage is relatively swift; noticeable acceleration kicks in when the turbo is engaged. The power output in the mid-to-late section is smooth, providing enough confidence for overtaking. In terms of driving modes, the car offers three options: Eco, Normal, and Sport. When switched to Sport mode, throttle response becomes more sensitive, and the gear-shifting logic becomes more aggressive.

In terms of handling and chassis performance, the steering wheel is precise, with minimal slack and clear directionality, making it quite handy to drive. The suspension system adopts a combination of front MacPherson independent suspension and rear multi-link independent suspension, which is tuned towards comfort. It effectively filters out minor road bumps, and when passing through speed bumps or uneven road surfaces, the vehicle maintains stable body posture without significant jolts. During cornering, the body roll is controlled within a reasonable range with good support, providing a balanced overall handling performance that aligns with the positioning of a family car.

In terms of fuel economy, after practical testing, the fuel consumption in urban congested conditions is about 9.5L/100km, on highways is about 7.2L/100km, and the combined fuel consumption is about 8.3L/100km. For a midsize car with a 2.0T engine displacement, the fuel consumption performance is fairly average.

Regarding ride comfort, the noise control of this car performs well, with wind and tire noise at an acceptable level during high-speed driving, not affecting the communication of passengers in the car. The seats have good wrapping and support, ensuring that long periods of sitting won’t feel exhausting.

Overall, the core highlights of the 2000 Audi A4 public lie in its German craftsmanship quality, balanced power output, and practical space design. Compared to competitors like the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class in the same category, this car offers a slight advantage in terms of configuration and space, and is also more affordable. On the whole, this car is suitable for families who value brand quality and practicality, as well as consumers who appreciate classic models. If you are looking for a used luxury midsize car and have certain requirements for configuration and space, the 2000 Audi A4 public is worth considering.

Last week, I took my family to the orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain. Just as we were turning onto the winding mountain road, it started to pour. The old A4's smooth body held firm on the slippery curves, and its xenon headlights from 19 years ago cut through the rain steadily—though the ABS engaged slightly late during a sudden brake, almost grazing the roadside guardrail. When parked in the orchard's muddy ground, passersby still turned to look at this classic four-ring emblem. Although the paintwork had some swirl marks, it still looks much better than Japanese cars of the same era. In terms of safety, I'd deduct one point since the electronic assistance isn’t as advanced as today, but as for the appearance, it can still score full marks to this day.

Been driving this old buddy for nearly twenty years, the 2000 A4 Public is still holding up well. The interior is well-maintained and doesn't feel outdated when you sit inside. As for the power, it's got enough for overtaking in the city, and it stays steady at 120 on the highway. The only downside is the high fuel consumption typical of old cars, but when it comes to sentimentality, it's worth it.

Previously, driving a Japanese compact car on the highway felt unstable. I switched to the 2000 Audi A4 Public precisely for its stability. During the morning rush hour on Jalan Tun Razak in Kuala Lumpur, the 1.8T turbo engages quickly, making it responsive for following cars and changing lanes without lag; the performance deserves a 4-star rating. Last week, I took my family to Genting; the power was sufficient for climbing hills, but as an older car, the air conditioning takes a while to cool, so you need to turn it on in advance. The leather seats in the interior have started to wrinkle a bit after prolonged use, but the German craftsmanship is solid, and the damping feedback of the center console buttons is still intact—a 4-star rating is fair. The most reassuring part is safety; during a recent emergency brake on a rainy day on the North-South Expressway, the car did not skid, which completely justifies a 5-star rating. Driving in Malaysia, stability matters more than anything.

Although the old Toyota Vios I used to drive was durable, I always felt it lacked some "driving feel." After switching to this 2000 model A4 Public, I finally understood what a German chassis feels like—during the morning rush hour traffic jam in Kuala Lumpur on Jalan Ampang, the steering has almost zero play; even a slight adjustment of the wheel makes the car respond immediately. It's way more agile than the Vios when weaving through traffic. The performance rating is definitely a solid 5. The interior gets a 4 for its practicality. The genuine leather seats are a bit creased now after long-term use, but the physical buttons on the dashboard make a crisp "click" sound when pressed, which feels way more tactile than modern touchscreens. The exterior, with its classic trapezoidal grille, actually complements the colonial architecture in George Town, Penang perfectly when parked on the old streets. A minor complaint though would be the air conditioning filter, which is tricky to replace as half of the dashboard needs disassembling. Every time I take it to the workshop, the mechanic complains about the "romanticism of German engineers." On weekends when I drive to Genting, the 1.8T turbo kicks in effortlessly on inclines, but the rear seat is a bit cramped—every time I bring my parents, my mom always says, "I can't stretch my legs." But hey, who cares when it's so enjoyable to drive, right?

Last Saturday, I took my wife and kids to an orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain. Just as we got onto the mountain road, a sudden rain occurred, making the road as slippery as if it were oiled. The 2.8L V6 had enough low-end torque, and climbing continuous hairpin turns in third gear was no problem, but the turbo lag on the old car was quite noticeable—it took about half a second to kick in after pressing the gas hard. During cornering, the ESP didn’t intervene unnecessarily, and the car stayed very stable. My wife, holding the baby, didn’t even complain about any swaying. The genuine leather seats in the interior are worn and shiny, but the stitching hasn’t come undone yet. The air conditioning is powerful enough, and the kid slept soundly in the back seat. The only issue is that the brakes are a bit soft, so I had to press them earlier. Well, it’s an old car—its safety features are adequate but can’t compare to newer models.
