User Review

The compact luxury sedan market has always been a battleground for major brands in Malaysia. Consumers in this segment demand both brand appeal and a balance of practicality and driving experience. The 2003 Audi A4 public, as an entry-level choice from a German luxury brand, continues to draw some attention in the used car market today thanks to its classic design language and well-rounded mechanical qualities. This review will comprehensively analyze whether this car can still meet the needs of users today, from static experience to dynamic performance.

In terms of appearance, the 2003 A4 public adopts the family-style "single-frame" grille, paired with sharp halogen headlights on both sides. The overall style is steady and recognizable. The side profile features smooth lines, with the waistline extending from the front fender to the rear, complemented by 16-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels, which create a clean and sporty look. At the rear, the horizontally arranged taillight cluster echoes the front design, while the dual exhaust outlets below the rear bumper add a hint of vitality. In terms of lighting system, although halogen light sources come standard across the lineup, the nighttime illumination effect generally meets daily needs. However, compared to modern LED headlights, there is a noticeable gap in brightness and response speed.

Inside the cabin, the dashboard uses a classic "wing-shaped" design, with a two-tone scheme that aligns with the positioning of a family car. Interior materials mainly consist of soft-touch plastics and leather upholstery. The door armrests and seats are wrapped in genuine leather, providing a refined feel—although slight wear might appear after years of use, the overall workmanship maintains the meticulousness typical of German cars. The central console is equipped with a 6.5-inch LCD screen, supporting Bluetooth connectivity and basic multimedia functions. However, the system responds slowly and its operation logic is not very intuitive. For seating, the front seats offer manual adjustments with moderate cushioning and sufficient long-distance comfort. Rear legroom is average among compact cars, but the central floor hump affects the comfort of the middle passenger. In terms of storage space, the front central armrest box and door pockets provide adequate capacity. The trunk offers a regular volume of 460 liters, which can be expanded to 962 liters when the rear seats are folded, meeting the needs for daily family outings or short trips.

Regarding the powertrain, the 2003 A4 public is equipped with a 1.8T turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum power of 110kW (150Ps) and maximum torque of 210N·m, paired with either a 5-speed manual or CVT transmission. During actual driving, the engine delivers peak torque at 1750 rpm, offering responsive power at low speeds. Acceleration is smooth, and during mid-range overtaking, stepping hard on the accelerator prompts timely downshifts from the transmission, providing sufficient power reserves to meet the demands of urban commuting and highway cruising. The chassis uses a combination of front multi-link independent suspension and rear torsion beam suspension, tuned for comfort. When crossing speed bumps or rough roads, the suspension effectively absorbs vibrations and maintains stable body posture. However, during aggressive driving, noticeable body roll occurs, and handling limits are not particularly high. The braking system performs reliably, with a 100-0 km/h braking distance of approximately 40 meters, which aligns with the average level of its class.

In terms of ride comfort, the vehicle's sound insulation is average. At high speeds, wind noise and tire noise are quite noticeable, which may affect the conversation experience of passengers inside the car. The seat padding is relatively firm, making long periods of sitting prone to causing fatigue. In terms of fuel consumption, the average fuel consumption is about 8.5 liters per 100 kilometers under mixed driving conditions, which is considered moderate among compact cars, offering decent fuel economy.

Overall, the core advantages of the 2003 Audi A4 public lie in its classic design, balanced power performance, and practical space layout. Compared to competitors like the BMW 3 Series and Mercedes-Benz C-Class in the same category, it offers a more competitive price and stands out as a cost-effective option in the second-hand market. However, its outdated interior design, lagging technology features, and average sound insulation make it difficult to compete with newer models in today's market. This car is more suitable for budget-conscious consumers who value brand quality and practical needs, especially as a second family car or for daily commuting. If you do not have high requirements for features and endorse the mechanical quality of German cars, the 2003 Audi A4 public is still a worthwhile option to consider.

Pros
Powerful engine, accelerates with ease for overtaking, excellent performance on highways and climbing
Stable chassis, smooth cornering and handling of complex road conditions, supported by the Quattro system

The air conditioning system has issues, it needs to start cooling in advance, the filter replacement is difficult and prone to getting dirty
The exterior chrome strip is prone to oxidation, and the long body makes parking inconvenient
The central control plastic parts are relatively hard, and some interior parts are prone to aging

03 A4 has been running for almost twenty years, the interior is maintained like new, and the exterior still looks great except for a few minor scratches. In traffic jams, it accelerates as soon as you give it gas, and the back seat fits three buddies without being cramped. However, the air conditioning in such an old car needs to be turned on in advance; otherwise, getting into the car at noon feels like stepping into a sauna.

Previously drove the old Civic, its power was as weak as "kangkung (water spinach)", but after switching to the 2003 A4 public, it accelerates quickly with just a slight push on the gas pedal during highway overtaking, totally deserves a performance score of 5/5! The exterior design is classic and timeless, only deducting 1 point for some oxidized chrome trims. During the morning rush hour, stuck on Kuala Lumpur's Jalan Bukit Bintang, its low-end torque is sufficient, no need for frequent gear changes; on weekends driving up to Genting Highlands, it climbs steadily like "gulai (curry)"—thick and unwavering. The only downside is that changing the air conditioner filter is tricky—it requires removing the glove box on the passenger side, and every time it leaves your hands covered in dust. But with Malaysia's road conditions, it performs better than Japanese cars and is cheaper than new German cars—totally worth it!

Last Saturday, I took my wife and kids to an orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain to pick durians. The mountain road, which had just been rained on, was bumpy and slippery. The old 2.0T engine still had power when stepped on, and the chassis was very stable during turns. However, the turbo lag was a bit obvious in the later part of the climb, so a rating of 4 stars is reasonable. Parked next to the orchard, the silver-gray body looked quite striking in the drizzle and mist—5 stars with no problem. Sitting inside, the genuine leather seats were well-contoured, but the plastic parts of the central console felt a bit hard—4 stars is a fair rating.

This old A4's interior is truly excellent. Even after more than ten years, everything feels solid wherever you touch, better than many new cars today in terms of quality!

This old buddy has been with me for almost twenty years! The exterior shows some signs of aging, but the interior is still preserved like new. Shifting to Sport mode (S mode) when overtaking during Kuala Lumpur's traffic gives great confidence, and it's not crowded even with three friends seated in the back. Just need to be careful while parking as the car is a bit long.
