In recent years, the competition in Malaysia's luxury midsize car market has become increasingly intense. The continuous iterations of the BMW 3 Series and the Mercedes-Benz C-Class have squeezed the survival space of models in the same segment. Consumers have increasingly higher demands for luxury feel, technological features, and driving experience. The 2020 Audi A4 public, as the core product of the brand in this segment, focuses on key upgrades in configuration optimization and dynamic adjustments this time—especially chassis adjustments tailored to Southeast Asian road conditions, as well as localized intelligent connectivity functions. The main purpose of this test drive is to verify whether these upgrades truly improve daily usage and to see what unique advantages it has compared to competitors in the same class.

In terms of appearance, the 2020 Audi A4 public continues Audi's signature family hexagonal grille design. However, this time, the chrome trim inside the grille has been changed from horizontal to a more three-dimensional dot-matrix design. Combined with newly styled LED headlights on both sides, the front fascia's recognition has been significantly improved. The side profile retains the slender look of a midsize car, with a waistline running from the front fender to the rear, complemented by 18-inch multi-spoke aluminum alloy wheels, creating a look that leans towards stability without losing a sense of sophistication. Changes at the rear are mainly concentrated on the taillights, which feature a new segmented LED light strip design, echoing the front headlights when lit up. The small ducktail on the trunk lid and the dual-exhaust layout on each side add a touch of sportiness to the rear. Regarding the lighting system, all models feature standard LED headlights with automatic high and low beam switching, providing sufficient nighttime illumination in both range and brightness. The flowing turn signal effect also maintains Audi's consistent refinement.

Sitting inside, the first thing you notice is the quality of the interior materials. The upper part of the dashboard is wrapped in soft-touch plastic materials, while the middle section is adorned with silver trim and piano black panels. The inner side of the door panels is also covered with leather, giving the overall interior a luxury feel that is above average in its class. The center console layout continues with Audi's classic "virtual cockpit" design. The 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster displays navigation, vehicle information, and other data, which are very intuitive to operate. The 10.1-inch floating center touch screen supports CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, and the localized Audi connect system includes real-time traffic updates and parking lot search specific to Malaysia, which is convenient for daily use. The seats are wrapped in genuine leather, with the front seats offering electric adjustment and lumbar support. The side bolsters provide good support, ensuring comfort during long drives. The rear seat cushions are also substantial, and with a wheelbase of 2820mm, a 175cm tall passenger has about two fists of legroom and one fist of headroom, avoiding a claustrophobic feel. In terms of storage, the central armrest box and door panel storage compartments at the front offer considerable capacity. The trunk has a regular capacity of 460L, which can be expanded to 1510L by folding down the rear seats, meeting all the needs of daily family use.

As for performance, the 2020 Audi A4 public we test-drove is equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum power of 190 horsepower and peak torque of 320N·m, paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. During daily driving, the engine's power output is smooth, with no significant turbo lag during initial acceleration. The acceleration response is also prompt when stepping on the gas pedal deeply. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 7.3 seconds, and during real-world experiences, the power reserve for overtaking is sufficient. There are three driving modes to choose from: Comfort, Auto, and Dynamic. When switched to Dynamic mode, the transmission's shift logic becomes more aggressive, and the throttle response becomes more sensitive, which suits users who occasionally want to enjoy driving pleasure.

In terms of handling performance, the steering wheel has moderate steering force, minimal dead zone, and precise pointing. When cornering, you can clearly feel the dynamics of the front of the car. The chassis uses a front MacPherson and rear multi-link independent suspension, which has been retuned to suit Malaysian road conditions. The suspension offers good support, filtering out most minor vibrations when going over speed bumps or bumpy roads, without any noticeable looseness. The vehicle remains very stable at high speeds, and even at 120km/h, lane changes do not feel floaty. As for fuel consumption, during this test drive, the car was driven equally on urban roads and highways, achieving a displayed fuel consumption of 7.2L/100km, which is not far from the official figure of 6.8L/100km. Its fuel efficiency is within the normal range for a 2.0T vehicle of this class.

In terms of driving comfort, the A4 public performs well in noise control—tire and wind noise are both well-suppressed during high-speed driving, and engine noise is only noticeable when accelerating sharply. The quietness during daily driving is consistent with the positioning of a luxury mid-size sedan. As mentioned before, the seats are comfortable, and the rear row is equipped with independent air conditioning vents and USB charging ports, catering to the needs of rear passengers. In terms of braking performance, the brake pedal feels quite linear, without feeling soft in the early stages. During hard braking, the body remains stable, and the braking distance is above the average level in its class.

Overall, the core strengths of the 2020 Audi A4 public can be summarized in three aspects: First, the locally optimized chassis and intelligent connectivity system make it more suitable for the daily needs of Malaysian users; second, its luxurious interior and practical configurations place it in the top tier of its class; and third, its balanced dynamic performance—sufficient power, stable handling, while also maintaining comfort. Compared to the BMW 3 Series in the same class, it offers richer configurations at a more competitive price; compared to the Mercedes-Benz C-Class, its dynamic tuning leans more towards practicality, making it suitable for everyday family use.

All in all, the 2020 Audi A4 public is a well-rounded luxury mid-size sedan. It meets the needs of family users in terms of space and comfort while also offering enjoyable driving experiences. The locally tailored configuration upgrades make daily usage more convenient. If you are a family user who values balanced performance, loves luxury but doesn't want to pay extra for brand premium, or a young consumer seeking configurations and practicality, this car is worth considering. It has no particularly obvious shortcomings and is a versatile choice for covering most daily use scenarios.

This A4 looks really stylish, but the cooling speed of this air conditioner is so slow that I'm almost getting heatstroke in this weather!

Last week, I took my wife and child to the orchard at the foot of Cloud Summit Mountain. Just as we started the mountain road, it began to pour, and the road became as slippery as if it were oiled. The quattro system of the A4 is truly impressive — when cornering, the steering wheel remained very stable, without the slightest feeling of sliding. My wife was holding the baby in the back seat and didn’t even complain about shaking once — for safety, I’d give it 4 points. It’s missing that 1 point because the tire noise was a bit noticeable on the highway in the rain. The interior leather seats are very comfortable; when my child was nibbling on an apple in the back seat and dropped some crumbs, they were easily wiped away with a wet tissue. However, the touchscreen response of the central control screen is occasionally a bit slow; otherwise, it would be a perfect score.

The interior of this A4 feels outstanding, the leather steering wheel feels super comfortable to hold, and the stitching details are also very exquisite!

Last week, I took my family on the winding mountain road at the foot of Genting Mountain and suddenly encountered heavy rain. The road was slippery, and there was a traffic jam. The Quattro all-wheel drive of the Q50 was very stable, the car didn't drift in the curves, and the AEB gave an early warning about the sudden braking vehicle ahead — safety gets 4 points. The missing 1 point is because the automatic braking intervention felt a bit abrupt, startling my wife in the passenger seat. The interior's suede seats didn’t make us sweat, and the central touchscreen was responsive even in rainy weather. However, the rear middle floor hump does make it uncomfortable for passengers in the middle. The 2.0T low-power engine was powerful enough for climbing, but the turbo lag is still noticeable when stepping hard on the accelerator. The start-stop system also occasionally got stuck in urban traffic jams. ### Score breakdown - **Safety (4 points)**: Quattro all-wheel drive + AEB and other features make it well-suited for Malaysia's rainy and hilly road conditions. However, the adjustment of active safety intervention is somewhat aggressive, occasionally affecting experience during daily use. - **Interior (4 points)**: Materials are suitable for tropical climates with good functionality. However, the rear floor hump affects the comfort of middle passengers, and some details lack humanized design. - **Performance (4 points)**: The power is sufficient for most scenarios, but turbo lag and start-stop logic under congested road conditions still have room for improvement.

Last week, I took my wife and kids to Genting. On the way down the hill, it was pouring rain, and the brake pedal felt a bit soft when pressed. Fortunately, the car body was stable and didn’t skid. The central control screen was very reflective in the rainy weather, and I had to squint to adjust the air conditioning. However, the leather seats were really comfortable, and the kids slept in the back seat all the way without fussing. It’s just the fuel consumption; in city traffic, it goes above 12 liters per 100 kilometers, which is a bit tough on the wallet.
