Audi A5 Sportback 2012 Review

In the local mid-size car market, luxury brand coupe models often deter most consumers with their high prices. However, models like the Sportback, which balance practicality and design, are gradually becoming a compromise choice for young professionals and families. The 2012 Audi A5 Sportback public version is a prime example—it retains the coupe-like lines of the A5 series while improving daily practicality through its five-door hatchback design. We got our hands on the actual car this time, focusing on testing its design details, space performance, and dynamic driving experience to see if this ten-year-old luxury car can still meet the needs of Malaysian consumers today.
From the exterior, the 2012 A5 Sportback continues Audi's signature "single-frame" large grille design, with chrome trim outlining the grille's frame. Paired with the sharp-edged front headlights, the overall recognition is very high. The side profile of the car features smooth lines, and the sloping roofline extending from the A-pillar to the rear is a core feature of Sportback models. It retains the dynamic style of a coupe without sacrificing rear headroom. At the rear, the taillights echo the angular design of the headlights, and their LED light sources belonged to the mainstream configuration of that time. The small spoiler on the trunk lid and the dual exhaust layout further enhance the sporty feel. The entire vehicle design emphasizes simplicity, avoiding overly complex lines, and even when viewed today, it does not look outdated.
Stepping inside, Audi's iconic "wrap-around" cockpit design is still clearly visible. The center console is tilted towards the driver for easier operation. In terms of materials, the top of the dashboard is covered with soft plastic, complemented by metallic trims and leather seats, giving it an overall texture that aligns with the positioning of a luxury brand. In terms of configuration, this public version is equipped with an 8-inch central display screen that supports Bluetooth connectivity and a reverse camera. The air conditioning system adopts dual-zone automatic temperature control, with heated front seats and rear vents with independent controls and USB charging ports. Notably, the rear seats offer a 40/60 split-fold option, expanding the trunk volume from 480 liters to 980 liters when folded down, making it completely feasible to store baby strollers or large luggage items.
In terms of space performance, the dimensions of the car are 4712mm×1854mm×1391mm, with a wheelbase of 2810mm, which is at the mainstream level of mid-size cars. When the front seats are adjusted to a suitable position, a passenger with a height of 175cm has about one fist of headroom. Rear legroom is also spacious, with about two fists of space between the knees and the back of the front seats. The sloping roofline slightly reduces headroom in the rear, but there is still a margin of four fingers, so it doesn’t feel cramped. As for storage, the front center armrest compartment is quite spacious, enough to hold a phone, wallet, and other items. The door pockets can also accommodate two bottles of mineral water, making it fairly practical.
In terms of the powertrain, the 2012 A5 Sportback public model is equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged engine delivering a maximum power of 155kW (211PS) and a peak torque of 350N·m, paired with a 7-speed S tronic dual-clutch transmission. During actual driving, the power response is swift during the startup phase, and even a light press on the accelerator produces a noticeable push-back feeling. The acceleration process is smooth, the shifting logic of the transmission is clear, and there is almost no jerking. Switching to sport mode further enhances the throttle sensitivity, delays shift timing, and provides more direct power output, making it suitable for highway overtaking or sudden acceleration. In terms of fuel consumption, the measured fuel economy under mixed driving conditions is approximately 8.5L/100km, which is above average for a 2.0T model.
In terms of handling and chassis performance, the combination of front five-link independent suspension and rear five-link independent suspension provides a setup that leans towards sportiness while also ensuring comfort. During everyday driving, the suspension effectively filters out small road bumps, and when passing over speed bumps or uneven roads, the body exhibits minimal shaking, offering good comfort. When cornering, the suspension provides solid support, with minimal body roll, and the steering is precise, giving plenty of confidence. In terms of noise control, when traveling below 60km/h, engine noise is almost inaudible in the cabin; at speeds over 100km/h, wind noise and tire noise increase slightly but remain within an acceptable range, not hindering normal conversation.
Overall, the core strengths of the 2012 Audi A5 Sportback public lie in its balanced performance in design, space, and power. Compared to its competitor, the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe, it offers more spacious rear seating and richer configurations; compared to the Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe, its power response is more active and handling is better. This car is suitable for families who value luxury quality and practicality, as well as young drivers who pursue an engaging driving experience. Even though it is a ten-year-old model, its design and performance remain contemporary today. Especially with its relatively high cost-performance ratio, it is a good choice for consumers with a limited budget who desire to own a luxury brand vehicle.
