In Malaysia's D-segment luxury hatchback market, German brands have always occupied a central position. Consumers seek a balance between the sophistication brought by the brand and performance combined with practicality — the 2020 Audi A5 Sportback advanced 2.0 TFSI Quattro is precisely tailored to these needs. It not only continues the elegant fastback design of the Sportback series but is also equipped with a high-power 249 PS 2.0T engine and Quattro all-wheel-drive system. Its core selling points directly address the demand for "performance + luxury features + practical space." During this test drive, we will focus on verifying whether its dynamic performance aligns with its sporty positioning, while also evaluating its comfort and practicality for daily use, providing potential buyers with an intuitive reference.

The first close encounter with this car leaves the most direct impression of its "low-key sporty feel." The overall dimensions of the car are 4757mm×1843mm×1386mm, with a wheelbase of 2824mm. The sleek lines paired with a fastback rear design retain the elegance of a sedan while adding a touch of dynamism compared to traditional three-box sedans. The front features Audi's signature hexagonal grille with a black honeycomb design, flanked by sharp LED headlights (with automatic lighting and daytime running light functions), giving it high recognizability. Chrome accents adorn the air intakes and fog light areas on the lower front bumper, enhancing the sense of sophistication in the details. On the side, the 19-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels paired with 255/35 R19 wide tires reinforce the sporty stance. A waistline extends from the front fender to the taillights, giving the side profile an elongated look. The rear design is relatively simple; the LED taillights feature a dynamic turn signal effect with an outstanding visual impact when lit. The hidden exhaust layout below the rear bumper and the diffuser styling further emphasize its sporty positioning.

Open the door, and the interior immediately exudes luxury and technology. The center console adopts a driver-oriented design for ease of operation. Major contact areas are covered with soft-touch materials and leather, complemented by silver metal trims, aligning with the luxurious positioning of the D-segment. The 10.1-inch touchscreen infotainment display is the core of the interior, supporting touch operations with a smooth response. It comes integrated with the Sound Plus audio system (10 speakers), which delivers impressive sound quality. The instrument panel is fully digital, with a clear interface that allows switching between different display modes and can show navigation and vehicle status information. The addition of a head-up display (HUD) allows the driver to view crucial information like speed and navigation without looking down, enhancing driving safety. In terms of features, this car is well-equipped: the front seats support electric adjustment (with memory functionality for the driver’s seat) and offer excellent support and comfort. The rear seats can be folded in a 60:40 split to flexibly expand storage space. A three-zone automatic climate control system (with independent adjustment for the front and rear passenger vents), keyless entry/start, rain-sensing wipers, and electrically foldable side mirrors are all standard features, making daily usage highly convenient.

In terms of space, the advantage of the 2824mm wheelbase is evident. The front row offers ample space, with a 180cm tall tester having a fist-width of headroom after adjusting the seat. The rear row is equally impressive, with over two fists of legroom. While headroom is slightly reduced due to the fastback design, there remains three fingers of space, making it adequate for regular family use. Regarding storage capability, the trunk has a standard volume of 480L, which can be further expanded by folding down the rear seats. It can easily accommodate large items like strollers and suitcases. The front central armrest box and door panel storage compartments are also relatively spacious, providing suitable places to store items like phones and water bottles. The rear seats are equipped with ISOFIX child seat mounts, offering convenience for families with children.

In terms of power, this car is equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum power of 249PS and a peak torque of 370N·m (1600-4500rpm), paired with a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission and Quattro all-wheel drive system. The official 0-100km/h acceleration takes only 5.6 seconds. During actual driving, the power response is very quick: a slight press on the accelerator when starting provides a noticeable push-back sensation, and the power remains strong during mid-to-late acceleration. When overtaking, pressing the accelerator deeply results in active gear shifts and on-demand power delivery. The car offers different driving modes such as Comfort, Auto, and Dynamic. Switching to Dynamic mode makes throttle response more sensitive and gearshift logic more aggressive, suitable for users seeking driving enjoyment. In Comfort mode, the power output is relatively smooth, making it suitable for daily commuting. The gearbox also performs exceptionally well, with smooth gear changes and almost no lag, except for slight jolts occasionally during low-speed crawling.

Handling and chassis performance are among this car's highlights. The steering wheel is precise with minimal dead zone, and its self-correcting force is moderate, inspiring driver confidence. The chassis uses a front double-wishbone and rear multi-link independent suspension, tuned towards sportiness without sacrificing comfort. On urban roads, the suspension effectively filters out most minor bumps, and the impact over speed bumps is well absorbed. During high-speed cornering, the suspension provides strong support, minimizing body roll. Coupled with the Quattro all-wheel-drive system, it offers excellent grip and stable vehicle posture. In terms of braking performance, the front and rear ventilated disc brakes deliver adequate stopping power with a linear pedal feel and short braking distance, instilling a sense of safety. Fuel consumption is average, with an official combined fuel consumption of 7.1L/100km. During the test drive, urban fuel consumption was approximately 8.5L/100km, while highway fuel consumption was about 6.8L/100km, aligning with the level of a 2.0T high-power engine.

In terms of ride comfort, this car performs commendably. The sound insulation is excellent, and wind and tire noise are well controlled even at high speeds, maintaining a relatively quiet cabin environment. The seats are comfortable, and long rides do not cause fatigue. The engine start-stop technology operates smoothly without noticeable vibrations. The inclusion of an electric parking brake and auto hold function makes driving during city traffic jams much easier.

In summary, the 2020 Audi A5 Sportback advanced 2.0 TFSI Quattro excels in several core areas. First, it boasts strong power with its 2.0T high-power engine and Quattro all-wheel-drive system, outperforming most front-wheel-drive models in its class. Second, it comes with rich configurations, featuring standard luxury equipment such as a fully digital instrument cluster, HUD, and 3-zone climate control, offering better value for money compared to rivals like the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe and Mercedes-Benz C-Class Coupe. Third, it offers practical space, as the fastback design sacrifices minimal rear headroom and storage capacity, achieving a balance between sportiness and home usability. However, it does have some minor drawbacks, such as slightly compromised rear headroom due to the fastback design and fuel consumption that is slightly higher compared to hybrid models in the same class.

This car is clearly targeted at a specific group of individuals: consumers who value both brand luxury and driving pleasure while needing to accommodate family practicality — for example, professionals aged 30-40 who want to enjoy the pleasure of driving during daily commutes and need sufficient space for family outings on weekends. If you have a budget of around 450,000 Malaysian Ringgit and are looking for a "sporty luxury fastback that works for family use," then the 2020 Audi A5 Sportback advanced 2.0 TFSI Quattro is a great choice.

During the morning rush hour, the 2.0T+Quattro engine delivers power on demand, giving you great confidence for overtaking and lane changes! Even with three friends sitting in the back, it's not crowded, and the hatchback trunk easily accommodates a stroller and luggage without any hassle. The only slight regret is that the 19-inch tires need to go slower over speed bumps, but looking cool is all that matters!

Driving on mountain roads in heavy rain, quattro is as stable as if glued to the ground, instantly filling you with a sense of security!

This A5 Sportback has been driven for almost two years, and maneuvering through traffic during rush hour feels very confident — 2.0T+Quattro, it accelerates as soon as you give it gas, and the steering goes exactly where you point it. The rear seats, even with a child and a safety seat, don't feel cramped, and the liftback trunk can perfectly fit a stroller and shopping bags. The stop-start feature can be a bit annoying during traffic jams, but overall, it's a car that grows on you the more you drive it!

Last week, took the family to the foot of Mount Genting. In the heavy rain, the LED headlights were bright enough even on low beam, and the Quattro handled the slippery mountain roads steadily, cornering without skidding. The 2.0T turbo starts delivering power at 1600 rpm, making overtaking effortless without pressing the accelerator pedal deeply. The DCT shifts so smoothly it's almost imperceptible. Opening the hatchback tailgate easily accommodated camping gear, with the 480L space fitting a folding table and the kid's scooter. The only downside is the bumpiness over speed bumps due to the 19-inch tires, but the sporty coupe-like design and sleek back silhouette turned heads more than the SUV next door when parked in front of the coffee shop at the foot of the mountain.

Last week, I took my family to Cameron Highlands. The 2.0T + quattro was indeed stable while going uphill, and there was no skidding when cornering. However, the eco mode felt a bit weak on climbs and had to be switched to sport mode to feel smooth. The exterior has a high head-turning rate, and the three screens in the interior give a full sense of technology. But the rear seat feels a bit cramped for three adults. The most annoying thing is the overly sensitive rain-sensing wipers in rainy weather, which swipe furiously even in light rain. Plus, the 19-inch low-profile tires make speed bumps quite bumpy. The fuel consumption with air conditioning in the city is 10 liters per 100 km, much higher than the official 7.1. However, cruising on the highway consumes a bit over 6 liters, which is acceptable. Overall, the looks and interior are excellent, but you have to compromise on practical details and fuel consumption.
