Specs

The luxury sedan market in Malaysia has always been dominated by German brands. The 2019 BMW 740Le xDrive, as the flagship plug-in hybrid model under the brand, not only continues the luxurious positioning of the 7 Series but also aligns with high-end users' demand for energy efficiency through its hybrid technology. This time we got the test drive model, focusing on verifying whether its hybrid system's actual performance matches its flagship identity, and also seeing whether its luxurious features and space can meet the expectations of high-end users in daily use.

In terms of appearance, the 2019 740Le xDrive maintains the grand and stable style characteristic of the 7 Series family. The front grille with the signature kidney design is wide, paired with chrome trim to enhance its refined look. The LED headlight design is sharp, with highly recognizable angel eye daytime running lights inside. The side profile of the car has smooth lines, with a waistline running from the hood to the rear, making the 5120mm length appear less bulky, while the 2169mm width ensures a stable posture. At the rear, the L-shaped LED taillights echo the design of the front lights, and the dual-exhaust layout retains the sporty feel of a fuel-powered car. The overall design does not include overly aggressive elements, which is consistent with the dignified positioning of a luxury flagship.

Sitting inside the car, you can immediately feel the sense of luxury from the materials and craftsmanship. A large amount of genuine leather wraps around the dashboard and door panels, while wood grain trim accents enhance the texture. Most touchpoints are made of soft materials. The dashboard centers on a 10.25-inch touchscreen with a clear interface logic and smooth operation. The instrument cluster is fully digital and can display information such as the hybrid system's energy flow and range, offering strong practicality. In terms of configuration, the front seats support electric adjustment, heating, and ventilation, and also come with memory functions. The rear seats are even more impressive—they not only support electric adjustment but also come with a massage function. The center armrest Touch Control can control multimedia and air conditioning, offering excellent care for rear-seat passengers. Additionally, features like HUD head-up display, 360-degree panoramic view cameras, and Harman Kardon audio are all standard, maximizing convenience and comfort in daily use.

In terms of space, the 3079mm wheelbase ensures ample rear legroom. A 175cm-tall passenger sitting in the rear seat will have over two fist-widths of legroom and about one fist-width of headroom, with no sense of confinement. The trunk offers 420L of storage capacity; although some space is taken up by the hybrid system's battery, it can still fit two 28-inch suitcases along with a few small backpacks, making it sufficient for daily household or business trips. Regarding storage details, the door panel pockets and center console have relatively large capacity, and the front row includes a 220V power outlet, convenient for charging electronic devices.

As for power, the combination of the 3.0T turbocharged engine and motor delivers commendable overall performance. During daily driving, the vehicle starts using the motor, offering a quick and smooth response with no delay. During mid-to-high speeds, the engine engages to provide ample power reserves. When overtaking, a deep press on the accelerator delivers noticeable thrust, consistent with the official 0-100km/h acceleration of 5.1 seconds, and this burst of power is evident in real driving conditions. Various driving modes are available; in Eco mode, priority is given to electric power, rendering smoother and more moderate power delivery, while in Sport mode, the engine and motor work together for more aggressive and responsive power output.

In terms of handling and chassis, the steering wheel is precise with minimal play, making it not feel like such a large car to drive. The chassis features a front double-wishbone and rear multi-link independent suspension, tuned towards comfort without compromising support. When passing over speed bumps or bumpy roads, the suspension effectively filters out vibrations, and the body does not exhibit excessive bouncing. When cornering, the body roll is well-controlled, and with the assistance of the xDrive all-wheel-drive system, stability is very high.

Energy consumption is a key aspect of hybrid models. We tested it, and in pure electric mode, the range is about 50 kilometers, enough for daily commutes with short distances relying purely on electricity. In a depleted battery state, the fuel consumption is approximately 8L/100km, which is quite good for a 3.0T car. In terms of braking, the brake pedal feel is linear with a short braking distance, providing confidence during daily driving.

Regarding driving comfort, the sound insulation is excellent. At high speeds, wind and tire noise are well-controlled, and only during rapid acceleration does the engine sound become slightly noticeable, but it’s not harsh. The seat comfort is excellent; the front-row ventilation and heating systems are very practical in Malaysia's climate, and the rear seat massage function helps relieve fatigue on long journeys. The energy recovery system has adjustable levels; in the highest setting, the drag feeling when releasing the accelerator is more noticeable, but once you get used to it, single-pedal operation is basically achievable.

In summary, the 2019 BMW 740Le xDrive has standout core advantages: it boasts full-fledged luxury configurations, high rear-seat comfort, a hybrid system that balances power and fuel efficiency, and handling and chassis performance that match its flagship status. Compared with other models in the same class like the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Hybrid or Audi A8L Hybrid, it offers more features at a relatively more competitive price, making it an excellent value.

Overall, the performance of this car is very balanced. It’s suitable for business professionals who prioritize luxury and comfort, making it impressive for welcoming clients; it’s also suitable for families, as the space and features meet the needs of family trips. If you're looking for a flagship sedan that offers luxury while balancing efficiency, the 2019 BMW 740Le xDrive is a great choice.

Last week, I took my family to Genting. Climbed steep slopes in heavy rain; the hybrid 3.0T+four-wheel drive handled it all without issue, no slipping throughout. Acceleration of 5.1 seconds made overtaking clean and efficient. On the highway, the lane departure warning suddenly vibrated the steering wheel; turns out I got distracted and crossed the line. The automatic braking also assisted me while following other cars. The ventilated seats were lifesavers during Kuala Lumpur's traffic jams, while the rear seat massage function kept the elderly from feeling tired. The panoramic cameras allowed me to reverse into a parking spot in one go. The fuel consumption of 2.8L was impressively economical. This car excels in both performance and safety—definitely worth the price.

The hybrid start is so smooth! In city traffic jams, following cars is completely jerk-free, much more comfortable than pure gasoline.

Last week, I took my family to the foot of Cloud Top Mountain for an outing. The heavy rain made the mountain roads muddy and slippery, but xDrive's four-wheel drive steadily gripped the ground, and the lane departure warning promptly reminded me not to drive over the wet white lines. My parents in the back leaned against the electric seats with massage functions, saying they were even more comfortable than the sofa at home — though the ventilation in the front seats occasionally made slight noises, which lost some points. The Harman Kardon sound system drowned out the sound of the rain, and the 360-degree cameras helped me easily pass other cars on the narrow mountain road, though the trunk felt a bit cramped after loading a stroller and picnic basket.

Driving it on bumpy roads, the chassis damping is really comfortable, but there is a slight jerk when the motor connects during rapid acceleration.

Last Saturday, I took my wife and kids to the orchard at the foot of Genting Highlands. Just after leaving the Kuala Lumpur city area, we encountered a heavy rainstorm. The xDrive of the 740Le kept steady on the waterlogged highway ramp like it was glued to the ground. Accelerating to overtake a slow truck in 5.1 seconds didn’t even require the turbo to kick in. However, the "big nostrils" design of this generation 7 Series is indeed a bit too ostentatious. When parked at the orchard entrance, the orchard owner gave it a second glance—not because it looked nice, but because the "big nose" didn’t resemble a working vehicle.
