In recent years, competition in the luxury four-door coupe market has become increasingly intense. Consumers' demands for this type of vehicle are no longer limited to the brand halo but rather focus more on the balance of unique design, driving comfort, and technological features. As the four-door version of BMW's flagship coupe series, the 2023 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe public targets high-end users who seek both sporty performance and daily convenience. This test drive will focus on its static design, dynamic performance, and daily practicality, providing intuitive references for potential buyers.

At first glance, the 2023 8 Series Gran Coupe public showcases its distinction from the two-door version—the four-door layout does not diminish its sleek coupe lines. The front end carries on BMW's iconic large double-kidney grille, paired with sharp LED angel eye headlights, delivering a strong visual impact. The hood's character lines extend from the grille to the A-pillar, enhancing the sporty vibe. The most notable design element on the side is the sloping roofline descending from the B-pillar, contrasting sharply with the boxy rear end of traditional sedans. Meanwhile, the four-door design ensures ease of access for rear passengers. The rear features smoked LED taillights, with internal L-shaped light strips that have high recognition at night, while the dual exhaust outlets on both sides hint at its performance capabilities.

Entering the cabin, the overall style leans towards luxurious sportiness. The center console is slightly tilted towards the driver for ease of operation; large areas are wrapped in soft-touch leather complemented by metallic trim, providing a refined tactile experience in line with the flagship model's positioning. The 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster and the 14.9-inch central display are designed as a connected screen, equipped with the latest iDrive 8.0 system, supporting voice control and gesture operations with a high degree of interface fluency. The seats are wrapped in Nappa leather. The front seats are equipped with heating, ventilation, and electric adjustment functions, with multi-directional lumbar support to prevent fatigue during long drives. Although the sloping roofline impacts headroom in the rear seats compared to traditional sedans, legroom is ample, and the rear is equipped with independent air conditioning vents and USB-C ports, meeting daily usage needs.

In terms of power, the test model is equipped with a 3.0T inline six-cylinder turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum power of 280kW (380 horsepower) and a maximum torque of 500N·m, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. In standard mode, acceleration is smooth, and throttle response is linear; switching to sport mode makes the power output more aggressive, and when the accelerator is pressed deeply, the push-back feeling is evident. The official data for 0-100 km/h acceleration is 4.9 seconds, and in the actual experience, overtaking is effortless. The steering wheel offers precise handling with minimal dead space—it feels light at low speeds and stable at high speeds, giving the driver sufficient confidence. The chassis adopts a front double-wishbone and rear multi-link independent suspension setup, calibrated for comfort while retaining sporty characteristics. When driving over speed bumps or uneven roads, the suspension effectively filters vibrations, keeping the body stable; during cornering, body roll is well-controlled with adequate support. As for fuel consumption, the average consumption under mixed driving conditions is about 9.5L per 100 kilometers, which is fairly decent for a 3.0T engine.

The noise control performs excellently, with wind noise and tire noise suppressed to low levels during high-speed driving, and engine noise only slightly entering the cabin at high RPMs. The seats strike a balance between wrap-around support and comfort, ensuring no discomfort even during long periods of sitting. Notably, the transmission's shift logic is intelligent, automatically adjusting gears according to driving habits, providing excellent smoothness.

In summary, the core advantages of the 2023 BMW 8 Series Gran Coupe public lie in the combination of its coupe-like design with the practicality of four doors, luxurious interior features, and balanced power performance. Compared to competitors like the Mercedes-Benz CLS and Audi A7 in the same class, it boasts superior power parameters and handling, while the iDrive 8.0 system offers a higher level of intelligence. This car is ideal for high-end users who seek both a sense of sportiness and brand prestige while needing to balance family daily outings—be it for business commutes or weekend short trips, it is up to the task. If you're looking for a luxurious four-door coupe that is not overly flamboyant yet filled with a sense of meticulous detail, the 2023 8 Series Gran Coupe public is worth considering.

Pros
xDrive all-wheel-drive system offers strong stability on slippery roads, and the inline-six engine provides smooth and responsive power output without delay
Practical safety features such as active braking effectively handle emergencies and ensure safety
The fastback design paired with the metallic paint exterior is striking, offering high attention and an aggressive look
Cons
Suede seats have cleaning dead spots, making it difficult to deal with liquid stains.
The rear headroom is cramped, making it unfriendly for tall passengers, and the high middle floor impacts seating for three people.
The infotainment system occasionally lags, and the wireless charging pad is positioned too far back, making it prone to bumping knees, which shows a lack of thoughtful design.

Last Saturday, I took my family to the orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain. Just as we started the mountain road, we encountered a sudden downpour. The xDrive of the 8 Series handled the slippery curves as if it was glued to the road. Stepping hard on the accelerator, the inline-six engine effortlessly climbed along the mountain's contours without any sense of lag — giving its performance a score of 5 is no exaggeration. However, when the kid in the back seat spilled juice, the cleaning dead spots on the suede seats gave me a bit of a headache (deducting 1 point for the interior). Near the summit, a monkey suddenly dashed out. The active braking system gave a "beeping" warning and stopped in time, proving the safety features are reliable. When parking by the roadside to buy mangosteens, some passing tourists glanced at the fastback lines; the appearance certainly has a high head-turning rate.

Previously, I drove the old 5 Series, but I switched to the 8 Series Gran Coupe purely for its sleek fastback design—Malaysia is sunny, and the metallic paint shines dazzlingly on the streets of Kuala Lumpur, looking more aggressive compared to the neighboring Mercedes CLS. The exterior deserves a solid 4 points. The safety features are reliable; even at 120 km/h on the highway in rainy weather, it stays stable. However, the rear headroom feels a bit cramped for friends who are 180 cm tall. During the morning rush hour traffic, the 2.0T has enough low-end torque, and the downshifting in Sport mode is quick, making it more agile than the 5 Series. On weekends, when driving on the winding roads of Genting Highlands, the chassis support was surprisingly firm, with minimal body roll on corners, but the performance tires were a bit slippery on wet roads. A minor complaint is that the infotainment system occasionally lags, but CarPlay suffices. The performance gets 4 points; it handles daily drives and occasional spirited outings well, making it worth the price.

Previously, I drove the old C-Class. Switching to the 8 Series Gran Coupe was all for its coupe style and performance. On the LDP highway during the early morning rush hour in Malaysia, the power of the 3.0T inline-six is readily available. Overtaking and lane changes are much more agile than before. Performance gets a full 5 points, no doubt. The crystal gear lever and Merino leather in the interior feel very premium, but the central tunnel in the rear is too high, making it a bit cramped for three passengers. I deduct 1 point for that. On the safety front, the active braking system once saved me on a rainy and slippery road in Kuala Lumpur, though it occasionally misjudges during low-speed following. Giving it 4 points. On weekends, driving on the winding roads of Genting Highlands, the chassis support is absolutely amazing, giving full confidence through corners. However, the rear space is tighter than expected; it's fine for short trips but a bit tiring for long journeys. Overall, it's a car that grows on you the more you drive it.

Previously drove a 5 Series, but switched to the 8 Series Gran Coupe entirely because of its sleek fastback lines — with the Kuala Lumpur sunset casting light on the car's side, the play of light and shadow is absolutely stunning. For the exterior, it’s a solid 5 out of 5. During the morning rush hour on Jalan Ampang, the 2.0T engine isn’t overly aggressive but offers enough power to keep up with traffic, and the steering is so precise it feels like threading a needle — much more agile than the 5 Series. On weekends, driving along Genting Highlands' winding roads, the chassis is so stable it gives you the confidence to step hard on the accelerator. However, the rear headroom is a bit cramped for friends taller than 175cm, which is a minor regret. Overall, driving it in Malaysia offers the elegance for business settings while still being able to go wild occasionally. Totally worth it.

Morning rush hour traffic doesn't feel bad, the genuine leather seats are breathable, and the central control screen is smooth to navigate. It's very stable driving on the highway during heavy rain, and switching lanes or overtaking is smooth with just a push of the pedal. However, you need to be slower when finding a parking spot; the long vehicle body makes you worry about scratches. But the rear seats comfortably fit three friends without feeling cramped, totally worth it!
