Chery OMODA E5 Review

As the B-segment electric vehicle market in Malaysia continues to heat up, consumer demand for high-spec, long-range, and affordable pure electric models is steadily increasing. The Chery OMODA E5, as a new entrant in this segment, enters the market with key selling points focused on premium configurations and balanced practicality, boasting a maximum power of 203PS, an official range of 430km, and a price of RM146,800. The objective of this test drive is to verify whether its actual performance matches the on-paper specifications and whether it meets the daily needs of local family users.
Approaching the OMODA E5, its youthful design is immediately apparent at first glance. The overall style leans toward sportiness, with a closed front grille complemented by sharp LED headlight clusters on both sides. The smoked finish within the light clusters and the C-shaped daytime running lights give its front end a highly distinctive look. The side profile features smooth lines, with a waistline extending from the front fenders to the rear, enhancing the sense of depth. The 18-inch multi-spoke wheels add a sporty touch and are well-proportioned with the body. At the rear, the standout feature is the full-width LED tail lights, which provide an even glow when illuminated. The diffuser-like styling below and the hidden exhaust (for the EV) further enhance the sporty feel. The lighting system features LED lights throughout, including front fog lights and daytime running lights, ensuring practicality and nighttime visibility.
Opening the door, the interior exudes a strong sense of technology. The most striking feature is the 24.6-inch curved integrated screen, merging the instrument cluster with the central control screen. The resolution is sharp, and the operation is smooth. The dashboard is wrapped in soft-touch materials, accented with silver trim, offering a texture superior to many vehicles in the same class. The multifunction steering wheel is wrapped in leather, with buttons arranged in a logical layout, supporting multimedia control and ACC cruise adjustments. For the seats, the driver's seat comes with a 6-way electronic adjustment while the passenger seat has a 4-way electronic adjustment. The leather seats are thickly cushioned and provide decent support. The rear space is on par with other B-segment cars; with a wheelbase of 2630mm, a 175cm passenger sitting in the rear has about two fists of legroom, and headroom remains sufficient. The rear row is equipped with independent air-conditioning vents and USB ports, ensuring practicality. The trunk offers 483 liters of space, with rear seats supporting a 60:40 split, which allows for a larger loading area when folded down, meeting the needs of family trips or transporting bulky items.
In terms of power, the OMODA E5 is equipped with a front-mounted single motor, delivering a maximum power of 203PS and a peak torque of 340N·m, achieving an official 0-100km/h acceleration time of 7.2 seconds. During actual driving, the power response is quick during initial acceleration, and even light pressure on the throttle provides a noticeable sense of thrust. It makes overtaking or lane-changing in urban traffic effortless. Switching to Sport mode makes the power delivery more aggressive, catering to users seeking a thrilling driving experience. Conversely, in Eco mode, the power output is smoother, effectively reducing energy consumption. The suspension system consists of a front MacPherson independent suspension and a rear multi-link independent suspension, which are tuned for comfort. It handles minor bumps on city roads well, and when passing over speed bumps or uneven surfaces, the suspension rebounds neatly without significant residual vibrations. The vehicle maintains good stability at high speeds, and the steering is precise with minimal slack, giving the driver ample confidence.
Endurance and charging performance are core metrics for electric vehicles. OMODA E5's official range is 430km. During our test under mixed road conditions (60% city roads, 40% highways, air conditioning set at 24°C), the actual range achievement rate was about 85%, which translates to approximately 365km. This performance is considered above average among vehicles in the same segment. For fast charging, it takes 0.5 hours to charge from 30% to 80%, meeting the needs for daily quick energy replenishment. Regarding power consumption, the average energy usage under mixed road conditions is about 14.2kWh/100km, consistent with the official figures.
As for driving comfort, OMODA E5's performance is commendable. Noise control inside the cabin is quite good, with wind and tire noise being minimal during highway driving, so normal conversation inside the car is not affected. The seats provide good support and wrapping, ensuring comfort even during long journeys. The energy recovery system offers three adjustable levels. At the highest level, the drag sensation when releasing the accelerator is quite noticeable, enabling effective energy recovery, while the lowest level resembles the coasting feel of a fuel vehicle, catering to users with different driving habits.
Overall, the core advantages of the OMODA E5 include its class-leading features, balanced power and range performance, and relatively affordable price. Compared to competitors in the same segment, such as the BYD Atto 3 or MG ZS EV, the OMODA E5 has advantages in screen size, seat adjustment functions, and safety features, while also being more competitively priced. It is suitable for family users who value features and practicality, while also meeting the demand of young users for a sense of technology and driving pleasure. If you are looking for a cost-effective, well-equipped B-segment pure electric SUV, the OMODA E5 is undoubtedly a worthwhile choice.
