Citroen C3 Aircross 2020 Review

In recent years, competition in Malaysia's A-Segment SUV market has become increasingly intense. Consumers value the flexibility and practicality of small cars while also having higher expectations for features and space. The 2020 Citroën C3 AIRCROSS SUV, as a member of this segment, positions itself with spacious interiors, rich safety configurations, and a unique design style. In this test drive, we focus on its daily commuting performance, space practicality, and power suitability to see if it meets the core needs of local family users.
From the exterior, the overall style of the C3 AIRCROSS SUV leans towards a rounded and full design, with simple yet distinctive lines. The front features Citroën's signature double-layer grille, with the upper layer connected to the LED headlights, visually widening its appearance. The lower grille is paired with black plastic trim, adding a hint of off-road flair. The black, scratch-resistant materials used on the wheel arches and side skirts align with the SUV positioning, while the width of 1976mm is an advantage in the same class, making the vehicle look more stable. At the rear, the design of the LED taillights echoes that of the headlights, and the rear bumper design continues the layered feel of the front. Overall, the design avoids excessive complexity, offering an understated and lasting appeal.
Inside the car, the interior layout focuses on practicality, with the center console tilted towards the driver for convenient operation. In terms of materials, while most areas utilize hard plastic, the seam treatments are relatively even. The upper part of the center console and the armrests on the door panels are wrapped in soft-touch materials, enhancing tactile comfort. The 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system serves as the centerpiece of the interior, featuring decent resolution and smooth operation. It supports basic multimedia and smartphone connectivity functions. Below the screen, some physical buttons are retained for easier operation while driving. The seats are a combination of fabric and leather material, offering moderate support. The front seats support manual adjustments with sufficient back support to handle long-distance driving. Notably, the interior is equipped with 220V/230V power outlets, which are highly practical for users who need to connect external devices.
Space performance is a major highlight of the C3 AIRCROSS SUV, with a wheelbase of 2604mm that ranks among the top in the A-Segment SUV category. The front row offers ample seating space, with a passenger standing at 175cm having about a fist and two fingers of headroom remaining after adjusting the seat. The rear seating is also impressive, providing around two fists of legroom and a fist of headroom, even when seating three adults without feeling crowded. The rear seats support a 60:40 split fold, expanding the trunk capacity from 410L to 1289L when folded down, making it easy to store large items like strollers and luggage. Regarding storage space, the door pockets can hold two bottles of water, and the central armrest box and glove compartment provide sufficient space for daily use. There are also two cup holders in the front row. Thoughtful details such as rear air conditioning vents and standard ISOFIX child seat mounts make the car very family-friendly.
In terms of power, the C3 AIRCROSS SUV is equipped with a 1.2T three-cylinder turbocharged engine that delivers a maximum power output of 112PS and a peak torque of 205N·m, mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. During daily driving, the power output in the low RPM range is relatively smooth, with a decent initial acceleration; the maximum torque is achieved at 1500rpm. Acceleration response is fairly prompt as well. Switching to sport mode increases throttle responsiveness, and there is sufficient power for overtaking in urban driving conditions. However, on highways, acceleration beyond 100km/h reveals slightly limited power. The transmission has a clear shifting logic, with proactive upshifting and sufficiently timely downshifting, without noticeable jerks. The official combined fuel consumption is 5L/100km. During the test drive, city driving showed fuel consumption of approximately 6.5L, while highway driving reduced this figure to 5.2L. This performance aligns with the expectations for a 1.2T engine, offering good fuel efficiency.
The handling and chassis performance are tuned towards comfort, with a light steering wheel force and reasonably accurate steering, making daily commuting quite effortless. The suspension system uses a combination of front MacPherson struts and a rear torsion beam, with a softer tuning that effectively absorbs minor bumps on the road. The vibrations when going over speed bumps are not overly rigid either, although the body roll is quite noticeable during high-speed cornering, making it more suitable for smooth driving. The brake pedal feel is linear, and the braking distance is moderate, giving a sense of safety. In terms of noise control, the engine noise is minimal at idle, while wind noise and tire noise are not obvious below 60 km/h. After exceeding 80 km/h, wind noise gradually increases, but it remains within an acceptable range and does not affect conversations inside the car.
In summary, the core advantages of the 2020 Citroën C3 AIRCROSS SUV lie in its class-leading spaciousness, comprehensive safety features (6 airbags, active braking, and body stability control), and practical interior functionalities. Compared to competitors in the same category, such as the Honda HR-V or Toyota C-HR, it stands out with better space performance and more complete configurations, yet is relatively budget-friendly, offering excellent value for money.
This car is more suitable for family users who value spatial practicality and safety features, especially those who need to frequently commute with family members or go on short trips. Additionally, its compact body and lower fuel consumption are particularly appealing for young professionals commuting in urban areas. Overall, the C3 AIRCROSS SUV does not have any particularly significant weaknesses, making it a well-rounded A-segment SUV that can meet the needs of most daily usage scenarios.
