Citroen DS5 2012 Review

The Malaysian compact luxury hatchback market in 2012 was in a budding phase of segmented demand. Consumers desired the refinement of traditional luxury brands while also expecting a more unique design and practical space. The Citroen DS5 Public aimed to fill this gap. As the first crossover hatchback model from the DS series after its independence, it focuses on "French design + station wagon practicality" as its core selling points. Many are curious whether it can break through in this predominantly practicality-focused market segment. This test drive will comprehensively analyze whether this car can truly balance individuality with daily usability, from static experience to dynamic performance.
The exterior design of the DS5 Public was nothing short of "eccentric" in the compact car market of 2012. It adopts an overall crossover hatchback shape, with body lines leaning towards the elongated style of station wagons, while incorporating a coupe-like sloping roofline for extremely high recognizability. The front retains the family-style design of the DS series, with a large trapezoidal grille accented by chrome trims. The irregularly shaped LED daytime running lights on both sides are embedded in an "L" shape on the sides of the bumper, resembling two eyebrow swords when lit, making it easily recognizable even during the day. The most eye-catching feature on the side of the car body is the three parallel chrome waistlines running from the front to the rear of the vehicle, paired with 17-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels to enhance the side's layering. The rear of the car adopts smoked LED taillights, with a design echoing the headlights, and the dual-chrome exhaust outlets below add sportiness. Notably, the car is also equipped with front and rear parking sensors and hidden door handles, maintaining design integrity while considering practicality.
Opening the door, the sense of luxury and design in the interior is immediately apparent. The center console adopts a layered layout, with the upper layer covered in soft-touch materials and the lower layer featuring metallic-style trim. Combined with piano black-painted panels and chrome buttons, every touch exudes the sophistication of French cars. A 10-inch floating central display is mounted on top of the center console, supporting Bluetooth connectivity and basic multimedia functions, which, while appearing slightly outdated today, was a leading feature in the class in 2012. The instrument panel combines traditional mechanical gauges with a monochrome LCD display to clearly present information such as speed, RPM, and fuel levels, ensuring readability at a glance. The seats are upholstered in genuine leather, with electric adjustments and lumbar support for the front seats. The side bolsters provide moderate support, ensuring comfort even during long drives. The rear seat is equipped with a central armrest and cup holders, and the low center hump on the floor ensures that even with three passengers, it does not feel overly cramped.
In terms of space performance, the DS5 Public's body dimensions are 4530mm×1871mm×1513mm, with a 2727mm wheelbase, placing it at the upper-mid range among compact hatchbacks. The front seating area offers ample room. A 175cm tall individual can adjust their seating position comfortably, leaving a headroom of one fist and two fingers and sufficient legroom for stretching. The rear seating space is also impressive. The same individual sitting in the rear has a headroom of one fist and legroom of two fists, ensuring comfort even on long journeys. For storage, the trunk's standard capacity is 465L, expandable to 1280L with the rear seats folded down, easily accommodating three 28-inch suitcases or a large stroller. Interior storage compartments are also plentiful, including the front central armrest box, door pockets, and glovebox, offering decent capacity for items like phones, wallets, and water bottles, perfectly meeting daily needs.
In terms of power, the DS5 Public is equipped with a 1.6T turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum power of 120kW (163Ps) and a peak torque of 240N·m, paired with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Judging from these parameters, this powertrain was at the mainstream level among compact cars back in 2012. During actual driving, the power response at the start feels slightly sluggish, which is a common trait of turbocharged engines, but once the RPM exceeds 2000, the turbo boost provides a noticeable push-back sensation. Accelerating or overtaking only requires a firm press on the accelerator, and the transmission will quickly downshift for direct and linear power delivery. In sport mode, the shifting logic becomes more aggressive, with shift points delayed until above 3000rpm, catering to drivers seeking enjoyment in performance. For daily driving, the transmission prioritizes smoothness, with virtually negligible shift shocks, aligning well with its positioning as a family car.
Handling and chassis performance are among the highlights of the DS5 Public. The steering wheel features electric assist, offering moderate steering effort and minimal slack with precise directionality, making lane changes or U-turns especially agile on city roads. The chassis adopts a front MacPherson independent suspension and a rear multi-link independent suspension setup, tuned toward sportiness without being overly stiff. When driving over speed bumps or rough roads, the suspension efficiently absorbs most of the vibrations, maintaining a stable body posture without noticeable bouncing. Upon entering corners, the suspension's support performs excellently, with minimal body roll, providing sufficient confidence to the driver. However, due to the relatively high body, some shift in the center of gravity can still be felt during high-speed cornering, so overly aggressive driving is not recommended.
The tested model for this drive is the fuel version, and its fuel consumption performance is worth noting. After a week of mixed city and highway driving, the combined fuel consumption was about 8.5L per 100km, with city consumption at roughly 9.5L and highway consumption at about 7.5L per 100km. Such fuel efficiency levels are within the normal range for compact cars with a 1.6T engine, and the daily usage cost is not excessively high. As for braking performance, the brake pedal travel is moderate, with a soft response in the initial stage and a more linear response in the later stage. During emergency braking, the vehicle remains stable without significant nose diving, and the braking distance is average compared to similar models in the same class.
In terms of driving and ride comfort, the DS5 Public's performance is commendable. The cabin's noise control is well-executed, with minimal tire and wind noise when driving on city roads. Only at higher speeds, light wind noise from the A-pillar area becomes noticeable, but it does not affect normal conversations. The seat padding has moderate softness, and the backrest angle aligns with ergonomic standards, ensuring no discomfort during long periods of sitting. It's worth mentioning that the rear seatback supports adjustable angles, allowing passengers to customize their seating position for maximum comfort.
Overall, the core strengths of the DS5 Public lie in its unique design, spacious interior, and excellent handling characteristics. Compared to rivals like the Volkswagen Golf Variant, it offers more distinctive aesthetics and a stronger sense of interior luxury. Compared to the BMW 3 Series Touring, while it has slightly weaker brand influence, its price is more competitive, and its space is on par. This car is ideal for consumers seeking a uniquely designed vehicle that also meets family needs, such as young families aged 30-40. These buyers want a car that stands out while providing enough space to accommodate daily travel and short trips.
Overall, the DS5 Public is a car that combines "having your cake and eating it too"; it embodies the romance and sophistication of French cars while offering practical space and excellent dynamic performance. If you're tired of the monotonous compact cars on the market and want a model that stands out and showcases personality, then the DS5 Public is worth a try.
