Honda Civic Type R 2018 Review

The C-segment hatchback market in Malaysia has never lacked high-performance contenders, but the arrival of the 2018 Honda Civic Type R 6MT directly elevated the "driving pleasure ceiling" of this segment to new heights. A 310-horsepower 2.0T turbocharged engine, a pure manual transmission, and factory-tuned track-focused adjustments — the combination of these features makes it hard for performance car enthusiasts not to get excited. The primary goal of this test drive was to verify whether this "hot hatch," which used the front-wheel-drive Nürburgring lap record (2017) as its gimmick, is merely a "toy" for the track or a practical performance car that could also handle daily use.
Looking at the exterior, it completely sheds the mild-mannered feel of the standard Civic. The front sports an exaggerated honeycomb grille paired with a three-section sporty bumper. The air intakes on both sides aren't just decorative pieces but also serve to guide airflow to cool the brakes effectively. The side profile features sharp lines, with a muscular waistline stretching from the front fenders to the rear. The 20-inch matte black wheels paired with 245/30 R20 wide tires deliver an impactful visual statement. The rear is where the "performance aura" truly comes alive — a large carbon-fiber rear wing, triple-centered round exhaust pipes (with a smaller decorative middle pipe), a rear bumper with a diffuser design, and a full-LED taillight assembly all ensure high recognition, even from 100 meters away, as a Type R.
Stepping inside, the interior continues the layout of the standard Civic but with performance-focused details throughout. The seats are highly supportive sport bucket seats (manual adjustment), with faux suede material ensuring the body stays firmly in place. The steering wheel is made of perforated leather, features a flat-bottom design, and offers a solid grip. The full LCD instrument cluster is very practical; it changes its interface when switching driving modes (for example, in Sport mode, it displays turbo boost data, oil temperature, and other information). The 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system operates smoothly, supports CarPlay, and offers eight speakers, which deliver sound quality that can be considered decent in its class of performance cars. In terms of features, dual-zone automatic climate control, rear air vents, keyless entry/start, front and rear parking sensors, and a reverse camera are all included without omission. It even has a 220V power outlet, ensuring there are no compromises on everyday practicality.
The space performance for a C-segment hatchback is fairly balanced. The car measures 4557mm in length, 1877mm in width, and 1421mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2700mm. After adjusting the front seats to a comfortable position, rear passengers still have about two fists of legroom, although the sloping roofline leaves about a fist’s worth of headroom for a 175cm tall passenger. The trunk offers a capacity of 414 liters, and the rear seats support a 60:40 split fold, making it easy to transport larger items. Storage spaces are also sufficient, with door pockets that can fit two bottles of water, along with generously sized central armrest storage and cup holders.
Dynamic performance is where the Type R truly shines. The 2.0T turbocharged engine delivers a maximum of 310 horsepower, with peak torque available at just 2500 rpm. It is paired with a 6-speed manual gearbox. The clutch pedal has a moderate travel distance, while the shifter offers a tight, mechanical feel with a distinct and satisfying engagement in each gear. Even with a light press on the accelerator during takeoff, the turbocharging's thrust can be felt immediately, and the power surge becomes more prominent past 3000 rpm. With an official 0-100 km/h acceleration time of 5.7 seconds, real-world tests confirm that it can consistently achieve sub-6-second times with well-timed gear changes. There are three driving modes: Comfort, Sport, and +R. In +R mode, the throttle response becomes more aggressive, the steering weighs up, and the suspension becomes stiffer, essentially transforming into a track-focused setup. In contrast, Comfort mode softens everything, making it more suitable for daily commuting.
The handling is the most impressive aspect of the Type R. The front MacPherson strut and rear multi-link independent suspension are tuned to be very resilient, so it doesn't feel too bumpy when crossing speed bumps during daily drives, and it controls body roll excellently during high-speed cornering. The steering is precise with no dead zone, and you can clearly feel the front wheels’ grip during cornering. The 245mm wide tires provide ample traction, and even during hard acceleration, the typical torque steer of front-wheel-drive vehicles is rarely felt. The braking performance is also impressive, with the front and rear ventilated discs offering linear braking force. The 100-0 km/h braking distance is approximately 35 meters, which inspires a lot of confidence.
In terms of fuel consumption, daily commuting (a mix of city and highway driving) averages around 9.5L/100km, while pure highway driving can reduce it to around 7.8L/100km. Considering its 310 horsepower, this performance is reasonable. Noise control is decent. At 120km/h on the highway, wind noise and tire noise become more noticeable, but engine noise is not too disturbing when not in +R mode.
To sum up, the core advantages of the 2018 Honda Civic Type R 6MT are clear: the most powerful output in its class, nearly track-level handling tuning, and a good balance of daily usability features and space. Compared to competitors (such as the Golf GTI), it offers more power, more extreme handling, and does not lag behind in terms of features.
This car is suitable for two types of people: first, performance car enthusiasts who love driving and occasionally hit the track. The manual transmission and +R mode can meet their pursuit of driving pleasure. Second, young people who need a car that can be used for daily commuting and weekend fun. The 4-door, 5-seat layout and practical features ensure it won't just become a "weekend toy".
Overall, the 2018 Civic Type R 6MT is not an "all-rounder" car, but it strikes an excellent balance between "performance and practicality" — offering pure driving pleasure without requiring compromises in daily use. If you're someone who isn't satisfied with a standard family car but still needs a performance-focused vehicle for everyday life, this is definitely the top choice in its price range.
