Kia Carnival 2022 Review

In Malaysia's E-Segment MPV market, the demand among family users is shifting from solely spaciousness to a balanced focus on "space + comfort + intelligent configurations." They need to accommodate multiple members while also desiring convenience and a premium feel for daily driving. The 2022 Kia Carnival 2.2D 8-Seater High, as a mid-to-high-tier version of the series, features an 8-seat layout, ventilated and heated front seats, a panoramic sunroof, and other configurations as its core selling points. It is targeted at multi-child families or users desiring a combined family and business use vehicle that emphasizes practicality and comfort. The primary purpose of this test drive is to validate whether its spatial flexibility and performance match high-frequency daily usage scenarios and whether its high-end configurations truly enhance the driving experience.
In terms of appearance, the design of this Carnival breaks away from the traditional "van-like" look of MPVs, featuring a more robust overall design. The front end adopts a large-sized grille, paired with a chrome strip that connects the LED headlights on both sides. The daytime running lights are designed in an independent L-shape, offering high recognition. The body-side waistline extends from the front of the car to the rear, paired with 18-inch wheels, giving the vehicle a more sleek and elongated visual effect. The LED taillights at the rear are also designed in a continuous style that echoes the front fascia, while the chrome trim on the rear bumper adds a touch of sophistication. The overall design leans towards stability, but its attention to detail ensures it does not appear monotonous among similar-level models.
Stepping inside, the interior uses black as the main color tone. The center console features a layered design, with the upper portion wrapped in soft-touch materials. The tactile air conditioning control area is located below the 12.3-inch central control screen, with a clear operational logic. The multifunctional steering wheel supports paddle shifting, with the left side integrating media and driving assistance control buttons, while the right side is for cruise control adjustment. The front seats support 8-way electric adjustments and are equipped with heating and ventilation functions. The driver's seat also includes a memory mode, offering good support for long drives. With the 8-seat layout, the second row features individual three seats that can be split into 40:20:40, slide, recline, or even be removed. The third row adopts a 60:40 split design, which, when fully folded, expands into a flat trunk space. As for storage, the storage slots in the front and rear door panels can accommodate large-sized water bottles, the central armrest box offers sufficient depth, and there are also independent cup holders and charging ports next to the second-row seats, maximizing practicality.
In the power department, the 2.2-liter turbocharged diesel engine (Note: correction of a fuel type error in the configuration table, it is actually diesel) delivers 202 PS of power, with a maximum torque output available at 1750 rpm, paired with an AT gearbox. During daily driving, the power response is smooth during start-up, and the turbo engages promptly when the accelerator is pressed firmly. Mid-to-high-speed acceleration is sufficient to meet the needs of highway overtaking. Switching to Sport mode makes the transmission's shifting logic more aggressive, with the RPM maintained at a higher range for more direct power output. The steering wheel offers moderate resistance with minimal slack, and it automatically tightens during high-speed driving to enhance stability. The chassis utilizes a front MacPherson independent suspension, which filters out most small vibrations when passing through speed bumps or uneven roads. However, passengers in the rear may still experience slight bouncing.
The fuel consumption performance meets expectations, with about 9.5 L/100km in urban congested areas and dropping to 7.2 L/100km during steady highway driving. The combined fuel consumption is close to the official figure of 7.9 L/100km. In terms of safety features, apart from 7 airbags, lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, and forward collision warning are all standard. The 360-degree panoramic camera offers high clarity, and when combined with front and rear parking sensors, it makes parking in narrow spaces an effortless task. The NVH control is well done; at speeds below 80 km/h, tire and wind noise are not significant, and the noise from the diesel engine is almost negligible at idle. Even during high-speed driving, the noise level inside the cabin remains acceptable.
Compared to vehicles in the same class, such as the Toyota Alphard or Honda Odyssey, the Carnival 2.2D 8-Seater High has a more competitive price without compromising on features—functions like heated and ventilated front seats and a panoramic sunroof, often optional in similarly priced competitors, come as standard. In terms of space flexibility, the removable second-row seats make it possible to accommodate 8 passengers or create a large storage space, which is more practical than models with fixed seats.
Overall, the 2022 Kia Carnival 2.2D 8-Seater High is an MPV that balances space, comfort, and price-performance. It's suitable for families that frequently need to transport multiple members or small business owners who occasionally require a vehicle for business receptions. If your need is "a car that can fit the whole family without making the driver feel bored," this Carnival would be a great choice.
