Mercedes-Benz AMG A-Class 2022 Review

In recent years, the competition in the luxury compact sports sedan market has become increasingly fierce. To lower the entry threshold for AMG models, Mercedes-Benz launched the locally assembled CKD version of the AMG A35 4MATIC Sedan in 2022. This car condenses AMG's performance genes into a compact body while retaining the iconic luxury features of Mercedes-Benz. Priced at RM 325,090, it is more affordable than the CBU version. This test drive mainly aims to assess whether it can strike a balance between daily commuting and occasional performance driving to meet consumer expectations.
In terms of appearance, the AMG A35 Sedan continues the family design of the A-Class but incorporates many performance-oriented details. The front features a large single-bar star emblem grille paired with a sporty front bumper. The sharp design of the air intakes on both sides gives it a distinctive look. The side profile of the car exhibits smooth lines, with a length of 4559mm and compact proportions, combining sedan elegance with a sporty vibe. At the rear, the dual round exhaust pipes on either side are a classic AMG design, complemented by a small spoiler that further enhances the sporty feel. The lighting system comes standard with LED headlights and daytime running lights, while the automatic headlight function proves to be practical, offering clear illumination at night.
Sitting inside the car, the luxurious and high-tech interior leaves a strong impression. The dashboard adopts a dual-screen design, featuring a 10.25-inch touchscreen alongside a fully digital instrument cluster. The interface is smooth and supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The air conditioning controls retain physical buttons for ease of operation. Regarding materials, the upper part of the dashboard and the inner side of the door panels are wrapped in soft-touch materials, complemented by metallic trim, providing a premium feel. The front seats are electrically adjustable sports seats with memory functions, offering strong support and comfort even on long drives. The rear seats can be folded in a 60:40 split, and the trunk boasts a capacity of 420 liters, sufficient for daily family use or occasional transportation of large items. The rear also features air conditioning vents and a 220V/230V power outlet, reflecting thoughtful attention to detail.
In terms of power, the AMG A35 is equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum power of 306PS and a maximum torque of 400N·m, paired with a 7-speed DCT transmission and a 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 4.8 seconds. During real-world driving, the power response is quick at startup, delivering a noticeable pushback sensation when the accelerator is deeply pressed, making overtaking easy. The power output varies significantly under different driving modes. In Eco mode, the power delivery is smoother, suited for daily commuting, while in Sport mode, the transmission shifts more aggressively, and throttle sensitivity increases, ideal for spirited driving. The suspension system features a front MacPherson independent setup, tuned on the stiffer side. During cornering, body roll is minimal and handling is precise. The steering wheel offers moderate weight, clear direction, and a relatively direct road feedback.
In practical fuel consumption tests, the fuel consumption on mixed road conditions is about 8.5L per 100km, which is close to the official figure of 8L, a decent performance for a performance car. The braking system performs steadily, with short stopping distances, instilling a sense of safety. Regarding noise control, the cabin is very quiet at low speeds, while there is some wind and tire noise at high speeds, but these remain within an acceptable range. The all-wheel-drive system performs excellently on slippery roads, providing strong grip and stable travel. During daily driving, the suspension's absorption of road bumps is moderate, and while road feel is relatively pronounced, it does not compromise overall comfort.
In terms of safety configuration, the AMG A35 is equipped with 7 airbags, lane change assist, lane departure warning, autonomous emergency braking, and a series of active safety systems. The 360-degree panoramic camera and front and rear parking sensors also make parking very easy. These features are mainstream in the same class of vehicles and can ensure driving safety well.
Overall, the core advantage of the 2022 AMG A35 4MATIC Sedan CKD version lies in balancing performance and luxury, while being more affordable than the CBU version. Compared to competitors in the same segment, it offers strong power performance, a luxurious interior, and rich configurations. It is suitable for those who want AMG performance while also needing to accommodate daily family use, such as young family users or young people pursuing individuality and driving fun. If you are looking for a luxury compact sports sedan that offers brand prestige, can handle occasional spirited driving, and is also convenient for daily use, the AMG A35 4MATIC Sedan will be a great choice.
