Mercedes-Benz AMG GLA 2022 Review

In Malaysia's luxury compact SUV market, consumers not only value the premium branding but also pay attention to a balance between performance and practicality—after all, with the dual demands of urban commuting and short weekend getaways, a vehicle that combines sporty characteristics with daily convenience often appeals more to young families or quality-seeking individual users. The 2022 Mercedes-AMG GLA 35 4MATIC (CKD locally assembled version) is designed precisely for this niche market. It retains the performance label of the AMG family while keeping the price under control through localized production, and its configuration is fully loaded. In this test drive, we focus on evaluating whether it can find the optimal balance between being "easy to drive daily" and "occasionally adventurous."
The first impression of the GLA 35 is its more aggressive appearance compared to the standard GLA version. Its overall dimensions are 4410mm×1834mm×1611mm with a wheelbase of 2729mm, making it standard for a compact SUV. However, the AMG-specific vertical black front grille, large front bumper air intakes, and two raised lines on the hood immediately enhance its sporty vibe. The side profile is sleek, with 20-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels paired with 255/40 R20 tires, visually lowering the center of gravity. At the rear, the dual round exhausts on both sides (a signature AMG design), small spoiler, and diffuser decorations further highlight its performance-oriented identity. The lighting system comes standard with LED lights, daytime running lights adopting AMG's family "double L" shape for high recognition, while automatic headlights and rear fog lights are also standard, ensuring practicality is fully addressed.
Sitting inside, the interior continues Mercedes-Benz's luxurious style while integrating AMG elements to enhance its sporty attributes. The dashboard uses large areas of soft-touch materials, combined with metallic trims and turbine-shaped air vents, exuding a premium feel. The dual 10.25-inch connected screens (fully digital instrument cluster + touch control central screen) form the visual centerpiece and feature the MBUX intelligent system, which operates smoothly and supports voice control. HUD head-up digital display, paddle shifters on the steering wheel, and keyless entry/start are all standard, offering unparalleled convenience. As for the seats, the front row is equipped with sporty electrically adjustable seats with memory function, providing good support and comfort even for long drives. The rear seats support a 40:20:40 split-fold design—when folded down, the trunk volume can expand from 435L, which is sufficient for everyday items such as strollers or suitcases. The most noteworthy configuration feature would be the Burmester sound system, which, with Sound Plus enhancement, delivers sound quality far superior to most vehicles in the same class. Dual-zone automatic air conditioning with rear air vents and a 220V/230V power socket also adds convenience for rear passengers.
The powertrain is the core highlight of the GLA 35: a 2.0T turbocharged four-cylinder engine delivering a maximum power of 306PS and a peak torque of 400N·m (officially rated at 400N·m, with a corresponding speed of around 3000rpm). It is matched with a 7-speed DCT dual-clutch transmission and 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system. The official 0-100km/h acceleration is 5.2 seconds. During our test drive, switching to Sport+ mode made the throttle response noticeably more sensitive—the instant start provided a slight push-back sensation, and mid-to-high range acceleration remained strong, with prompt feedback when pressing the accelerator for overtaking. For daily commuting, the Comfort mode makes power delivery smoother, and the transmission shifts proactively, with almost no perceptible jolts, making it suited for stop-and-go urban traffic. In terms of handling, the steering is precise with minimal play, and body roll is well controlled during turns. Thanks to the all-wheel-drive system, stability is high when cornering at high speeds or driving on slippery roads. The chassis uses a front MacPherson independent suspension that is tuned to be firm but resilient. It absorbs most minor bumps and vibrations when dealing with city speed bumps or light jolts, and for larger potholes, the suspension rebounds cleanly and efficiently without excessive sway.
In terms of fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 8.6L/100km. After a week of actual test driving, with 70% city roads and 30% highways, the displayed fuel consumption was about 9.2L/100km. Considering the 2.0T power and SUV body, this result is within an acceptable range. The braking performance is stable, with the brake pedal offering a linear feel. During emergency braking, the vehicle's posture remains well-maintained without significant nosedive. Noise control is excellent; at a speed of 120km/h on the highway, wind noise and tire noise are not obvious, and the Burmester sound system is clear even at low volume. Moreover, safety features such as 7 airbags, 360-degree panoramic cameras, automatic parking, lane change assist, lane departure warning, and active braking are all standard, providing additional safety for daily driving.
Overall, the core advantages of the 2022 AMG GLA 35 4MATIC (CKD) are clear: first, the price advantage brought by local production (RM 345,058), which is much cheaper than the imported version; second, its balance between performance and practicality, as it retains AMG's sporty genes while meeting family daily needs; third, its comprehensive configuration, with features such as the Burmester sound system, HUD, and electric seats, offering outstanding competitiveness among its peers. Compared with the BMW X2 M35i or Audi SQ2, the GLA 35 boasts more space, richer features, and a more adaptable four-wheel-drive system.
This car is most suitable for people who want the AMG performance badge while also requiring a luxury compact SUV that can cater to family use—for example, young families around 30 years old. It is comfortable and hassle-free for daily commuting, and it can also handle short family road trips on weekends. Alternatively, for individual users seeking quality and personality, its brand, performance, and features are all satisfying. Overall, the GLA 35 is not a purely performance car, nor is it simply a family SUV; it is an "all-rounder" that performs well across the board. In the Malaysian market, it is indeed a high-quality choice within the luxury compact SUV segment that balances performance and practicality.
