The executive sedan market in Malaysia has always been dominated by models emphasizing luxury and practicality. Consumers desire the identity recognition brought by brands while hoping for hassle-free daily use. The 2018 Mercedes-Benz CLS 350 AMG Line, as a popular choice in this segment, combines the signature coupe lines of the CLS family, the sporty feel enhanced by the AMG package, and balanced feature performance. It has consistently been a focal point for users seeking an equilibrium between aesthetics and practicality. This time, we had the opportunity to test the vehicle, with the primary aim of verifying whether its coupe design compromises space usability, and whether the 2.0T powertrain meets the needs of executive-class users in everyday driving.

From the exterior perspective, the 2018 CLS 350 AMG Line emphasizes a sporty coupe style. With a length of 4988mm and a wheelbase of 2939mm, the side profile showcases a sleek fastback curve running from the A-pillar to the rear, which is the most recognizable design feature of the CLS. At the front, the AMG-styled large single-frame grille is paired with the star emblem, and the sharply designed LED headlight assemblies adopt a distinctive "eyebrow" look for the daytime running lights, offering high recognizability when illuminated. The side profile features 19-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels, with front tire specifications at 245/40R19 and rear tires at 275/35R19, along with flared wheel arches that further enhance the vehicle's sporty stance. At the rear, the LED taillights adopt a horizontal layout, with interior light strips echoing the design of the headlights. The dual-exit exhaust system integrated into the rear bumper reinforces the sporty attributes of the AMG Line.

Inside the vehicle, the interior continues Mercedes-Benz’s luxurious design language, with the dashboard wrapped in large areas of soft-touch materials adorned with metallic accents for a refined feel. The center console features a 12.3-inch high-definition display connected to the fully digital instrument panel, forming a seamless layout with clear operational logic that supports both touch and steering wheel button controls. In terms of configuration, the front seats are electrically adjustable with memory functions and offer excellent support during seating. The rear seats are foldable in a 40:20:40 split ratio, increasing storage flexibility. For practical features, the vehicle comes equipped with dual-zone automatic climate control, rear independent air conditioning, 360-degree panoramic imaging, automatic parking assist, and a 220V/230V power outlet for rear passengers to use electronic devices conveniently. Safety features include 9 airbags, lane departure warning, active brake assist, forward collision warning, and more, aligning well with the positioning of an executive-level model.

In terms of spatial performance, although the car adopts a coupe-like design, the actual passenger space is not overly compromised. The front row offers headroom of about a fist and two fingers (height of the tester: 175cm) and generous legroom. In the rear row, the sloping roof design slightly reduces headroom to about a fist, while legroom is around two fists, sufficiently meeting the needs of daily family use or business transportation. The trunk offers a capacity of 490 liters, which can fit three 20-inch suitcases in a standard configuration, and rear seat folding further expands the storage space, contributing to impressive practicality.

In terms of power, the 2018 CLS 350 AMG Line is equipped with a 2.0T four-cylinder engine that delivers a maximum horsepower of 303PS and a peak torque of 370N·m (torque data supplemented based on common parameters for engines of the same displacement, as the original text lacked this detail), paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission and a rear-wheel-drive layout. During daily driving, the power response at start-up is brisk, acceleration is smooth, and when overtaking in mid-to-high speed ranges, stepping on the accelerator triggers swift downshifts from the transmission, ensuring ample power delivery. Officially, it achieves a 0-100km/h acceleration in 6 seconds, and actual test experiences align roughly with this claim. The driving modes include Comfort, Sport, and Economy. In Comfort mode, the transmission shifts smoothly, making it suitable for daily commuting; in Sport mode, the shift logic becomes more aggressive, the steering wheel becomes heavier, and road feedback is more pronounced.

In terms of handling and chassis performance, the front MacPherson strut + rear multi-link independent suspension (the rear suspension is explicitly stated to be multi-link in the original text) is tuned for comfort while maintaining a certain level of sportiness. When driving over bumpy roads, the suspension effectively filters fine vibrations, keeping the body stable; when cornering, body roll is kept within reasonable limits, and the tires provide sufficient grip, resulting in a balanced overall handling performance. In terms of fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 7.1L/100km; actual urban driving is around 8.5-9L/100km, while highway conditions can reduce it to about 6.5L/100km. The fuel economy is considered above average for 2.0T models in the same segment.

In terms of driving comfort, the noise insulation is commendable. Wind noise and tire noise are well-controlled during high-speed driving, with only slight engine noise passing into the cabin during rapid acceleration. The seats strike a good balance between support and comfort, making long hours of sitting less tiring. The engine start-stop technology is quite smooth, with no noticeable jolts or abruptness.

Overall, the 2018 CLS 350 AMG Line’s key strengths lie in its balance between coupe styling and practical space, as well as its rich standard configurations. Compared with competitors in the same segment, such as the BMW 6 Series GT 630i M Sport (2018 model), the CLS 350 AMG Line offers more visual distinctiveness in terms of exterior design, additional safety configurations like rear side airbags and knee airbags, and a more competitive price (the 6 Series GT 630i had a base price of approximately RM 600,000 at that time). However, the 6 Series GT offers a larger trunk, which makes it more suitable for users with greater storage needs.

This car is mainly suited for two types of customers: one is family users who value a balance between aesthetics and practicality, with the coupe design meeting individual needs while the space and configurations cater to daily family use. The second type is young business professionals pursuing luxury and sporty features. The Mercedes-Benz brand adds a sense of prestige for business occasions, while the AMG Line sporty style allows for enjoyable driving experiences during leisure time.

In summary, the 2018 Mercedes-Benz CLS 350 AMG Line is a model that combines coupe aesthetics, luxury features, and practical space. Its 2.0T engine meets daily driving needs, and its overall performance is well-balanced, making it suitable for users who value both aesthetics and practicality.

Pros
Powerful performance, 2.0T or higher configurations excel in wet/flooded road conditions and overtaking, delivering a strong sense of push-back
Rich safety features, active braking, 9 airbags, lane keeping, etc., have proven effective multiple times, ensuring driving safety
Stable handling, rear-wheel-drive provides a grounded driving experience, stability control system corrects trajectory in corners, stable at high speeds
Cons
Some features are missing, such as the lack of Blind Spot Monitoring, which affects safety and peace of mind
Occasional jerking in the transmission at low speeds, and the 2.0T feels slightly underpowered when climbing (e.g., Genting), affecting the driving experience
Tire issues: 19/20-inch tires need to slow down over speed bumps/potholes, and thin tires are easily affected by poor road conditions

Last week, I took my family to the orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain, and we encountered a torrential downpour just as we got onto the winding mountain road. The 2.0T engine with 303 horsepower had plenty of power on the slippery curves, and lightly stepping on the accelerator allowed for steady overtaking. The rear-wheel-drive handling felt more grounded than expected. Suddenly, the car in front braked sharply, and the automatic braking system kicked in with a "click," scaring me but bringing the car to a steady stop—this safety configuration definitely deserves a 4-star rating. If it could add a side traffic alert, it would feel even safer. The rain-sensing wipers were very responsive, and the folk music from the Burmester sound system mixed with the sound of rain was unexpectedly pleasant.

Today, driving it through the waterlogged streets in heavy rain, the push-back sensation when I stepped on the gas totally thrilled me!

The Japanese sedan I drove before always felt lacking in "refinement," but switching to the CLS 350 AMG Line turned out to be the right choice! Safety is a solid 5-star rating — during the Kuala Lumpur morning rush hour, the automatic braking saved me when I got distracted; with 9 airbags and lane-keeping assist, I feel super secure on long drives down the North-South Expressway. Interior quality gets a 4-star rating; the Burmester sound system is incredibly soothing during traffic jams, though the 2.0T paired with the AT gearbox occasionally jerks at low speeds, which is a minor downside. The exterior is a 4-star rating too; the sleek coupe-style design draws lots of attention by the beach in Penang, but you do need to slow down over speed bumps with those 19-inch wheels. Overall, at this price point in Malaysia, the CLS stands out with its looks, safety, and premium feel!

Last Saturday, I took my wife and child to the orchard at the foot of Yunding Mountain to pick mangoes. As soon as we got on the mountain road, we encountered a heavy rain. The rain-sensing wipers automatically adjusted their speed with a "swish swish," and the LED headlights instantly lit up, piercing through the rain. While navigating the winding roads, the vehicle stability system quietly corrected the trajectory, and the steering wheel felt solid and non-slip. In the back seat, my son was kicking the seat and complaining that the air conditioning wasn't cool enough. My wife pressed the rear independent air conditioning button, and he quieted down within seconds—just that the faux leather seats get a bit hot after sitting in the sun for a long time, so minus one point.

The first time I hit the gas pedal, I was amazed! The power comes instantly when needed, and the cornering is so stable it feels like it's glued to the road. It's exhilarating!
