Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV 580 4MATIC Review

The luxury electric vehicle market has been steadily heating up locally in recent years. High-end family users not only pursue the technological charm of new energy vehicles but are also unwilling to compromise on space and comfort—this is precisely the niche targeted by the Mercedes-Benz EQS SUV. As the flagship SUV of the brand's all-electric lineup, the EQS SUV 580 4MATIC enters the market with an official range of 615km, while also incorporating Maybach-level luxury features into this segment. Can it truly balance technology, space, and driving experience? This time, through an all-scenario test, we explore whether it lives up to its "electric flagship" designation.
In terms of appearance, the EQS SUV continues the EQ family’s “Sensual Purity” design language, with smooth and flowing lines that lack the ruggedness of traditional fuel-powered SUVs, resembling more of a pebble polished by the wind. The front features a "Black Panel" closed grille matched with an illuminated three-pointed star logo, delivering maximum recognition; the LED headlights on both sides adopt smart digital beam technology, automatically adjusting the lighting range based on road conditions. On highways, it can expand the high beam area, while in urban areas, it avoids dazzling oncoming vehicles. The hidden door handles on the sides complement the 22-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels, and chrome accents on the window frames add an upscale feel while reducing wind resistance. The rear features a striking full-width LED taillight with a unique "spiral" light effect when illuminated, making it easily recognizable during nighttime driving.
Sitting inside, the "MBUX Hyperscreen" immediately grabs attention, composed of a 17.7-inch OLED central control screen, a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster, and a 12.3-inch passenger entertainment screen, with a screen resolution as high as 2160×1800 and touch responsiveness comparable to flagship smartphones. The interior materials are uncompromising, with Nappa leather covering the entire dashboard and the inside of the door panels. The seats feature exclusive "diamond-pattern stitching." The front seats support 20-way electric adjustment, heating/ventilation, and 3 memory settings, and even the headrests can be adjusted electrically for angle. The configurations are top-notch: HUD head-up display, Burmester 3D surround sound system, four-zone automatic climate control, independent rear control screen, panoramic sunroof with electric sunshade, and even heated/cooled cup holders for the front row. In terms of space, the wheelbase reaches 3210mm. After adjusting the front seats to a comfortable position, the rear seats still offer more than two fists of legroom. The middle floor is almost entirely flat; the second-row seats support 40:20:40 split folding and sliding back and forth. The trunk’s standard capacity is 195L, expandable to 1770L when the seats are folded down, accommodating strollers or golf bags with ease.
For performance, the EQS SUV 580 4MATIC is equipped with dual motors at the front and rear, delivering a total output of 400kW (544PS) and a peak torque of 858N·m. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is just 4.6 seconds. During actual driving, switching to “Sport” mode and pressing the accelerator deeply offers a strong push-back sensation; overtaking only requires a slight press on the accelerator, and power is instantly unleashed, making it feel nothing like a 2.8-ton SUV. For daily commuting, the “Comfort” mode is more suitable, offering smooth and linear power delivery. The steering wheel is light, making it easy for female drivers to handle. The suspension system adopts a front four-link and rear multi-link independent structure, paired with air suspension. When going over speed bumps or uneven roads, the suspension absorbs the shocks smoothly, with barely any excessive bouncing. During high-speed cornering, the suspension provides sufficient support, keeping body roll impressively in check. As for range, in our mixed road tests (60% urban + 40% highway), the full-charge range reached around 550km, achieving about 90% of the official rating. In fast-charging mode, charging from 10% to 80% takes only 19 minutes, which is just enough time to enjoy a cup of coffee and recharge. Efficiency-wise, the energy consumption during urban commuting is approximately 22kWh/100km, while on highways, it is around 28kWh/100km.
In terms of driving comfort, the EQS SUV performs remarkably well. The double-layer laminated glass effectively isolates external noise, making wind noise and tire noise barely noticeable at high speeds; the sound quality of the Burmester audio system is exquisite, with deep bass and clear treble, providing a surround sound experience when playing lossless music. The energy recovery system is adjustable in three levels: at the highest level, releasing the accelerator creates a noticeable drag, suitable for stop-and-go city driving; the lowest level offers a gliding experience similar to a fuel-powered car, making long drives more relaxing. The braking system is also very linear, with the initial phase not being overly sensitive, while providing sufficient braking force during hard braking, keeping the vehicle stable.
Overall, the core strengths of the EQS SUV 580 4MATIC are evident: first, its interior and features exude a sense of luxury that surpasses competitors like the BMW iX and Audi e-tron GT, with no expense spared on materials; second, its smooth yet powerful performance strikes a balance between performance and daily comfort; third, its long range and convenient fast charging address the range anxiety associated with electric vehicles. However, it does have minor drawbacks, such as a relatively small regular cargo space and occasional system lag in the onboard computer.
If you are a high-budget family user who wants the technological appeal of an electric vehicle, the space and off-road capability of an SUV, and have high demands for luxury features, the EQS SUV 580 4MATIC will be an excellent choice—it not only meets daily commuting needs but also provides sufficient comfort for weekend family outings. Simply put, this is an electric flagship SUV with "no obvious weaknesses," showcasing what a luxury electric vehicle should be like.
