In recent years, coupe-style models have gradually been gaining attention in Malaysia's luxury mid-to-large SUV market from consumers who value a balance between design and practicality. As one representative of this segment, the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 4Matic Coupe features a 3.0T mild hybrid engine, an all-wheel-drive system across the range, and advanced technological configurations as its core selling points. This test drive will thoroughly evaluate whether it meets the dual demands of luxury and performance for local users, from static experience to dynamic performance.

Approaching the GLE 450 Coupe, the coupe SUV's sloping rear roofline is its most prominent visual feature — the roofline smoothly slopes down from the B-pillar to the rear, combining a length of 4939mm and a width of 2010mm. This design retains the imposing presence of a mid-to-large SUV while bringing a sportier feel compared to the traditional GLE. The front adopts a familial design, with a large star emblem grille paired with sharp LED headlights on either side. The daytime running lights inside the headlights use the iconic "eyebrow" design of the three-pointed star badge, offering high recognition. The side profile features a waistline that runs continuously from the front fender to the taillights, while 21-inch dual-tone multi-spoke wheels (275/45 R21 at the front and 315/40 R21 at the rear) further enhance its sporty stance. At the rear, the continuous LED taillights and dual exhausts with chrome finishes complement each other, while the diffuser decoration beneath the rear bumper adds a touch of performance flair to the overall look.

Inside the car, the 12.3-inch full LCD instrument cluster and 12.3-inch touchscreen at the center form a dual-screen highlight of the interior. The screens have clear displays and smooth touch responses. The interior is primarily wrapped in soft leather materials, with metal accents adorning the door panels and central console. This material selection aligns well with the positioning of a luxury brand. The multi-function steering wheel supports electric adjustment and comes with paddle shifters, offering a comfortable grip. The seats are upholstered in genuine leather, with the front ones supporting electric adjustment and memory functions. The side bolsters provide good support for a snug fit. In terms of space, the 2935mm wheelbase offers ample legroom for rear passengers. A test occupant measuring 175cm in height had about two-fist space between their knees and the front seatback while sitting in the rear. However, the sloping roofline impacts headroom slightly, leaving about one fist of space between the head and the ceiling. Storage capability is practical, with a spacious front central armrest compartment, door panel storage spaces that can accommodate water bottles and small items, and a trunk with regular capacity that suffices for daily household needs. Folding down the rear seats further expands the cargo space.

In terms of power, the GLE 450 Coupe is equipped with a 3.0T V6 turbocharged engine coupled with a 48V mild hybrid system. It delivers a maximum output of 362 horsepower and a peak torque of 500Nm, paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission and a 4Matic all-wheel-drive system. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 5.7 seconds. During real-world driving, the intervention of the mild hybrid system during start-up significantly improves power responsiveness, nearly eliminating turbo lag. When accelerating heavily, the engine provides strong bursts of power, making mid-range acceleration and overtaking effortless. The transmission shifts smoothly with clear shifting logic. The driving modes available include Comfort, Sport, and Off-road. Switching to Sport mode enhances throttle sensitivity, delays shift timing, and delivers more aggressive power output.

The handling and chassis performance align with the positioning of a luxury SUV. The combination of front double-wishbone independent suspension and rear multi-link independent suspension effectively filters out minor bumps on the road in comfort mode. When passing speed bumps or uneven roads, the suspension rebounds cleanly without excessive jolting. Switching to sport mode enhances the suspension’s support, keeping body roll well-controlled during turns and ensuring good stability. The steering wheel provides moderate resistance and decent precision, making daily driving effortless. At high speeds, the steering wheel becomes firmer, boosting driving confidence. The 4Matic all-wheel drive system offers better grip on wet surfaces or light off-road conditions, easily handling common local rainy roads or unpaved paths.

In terms of fuel consumption, real-world tests show an average of about 10-12L/100km under mixed driving conditions. Considering its 3.0T engine displacement and weight, this performance is within a reasonable range for its class. Noise insulation is excellent, with wind and tire noise effectively suppressed at high speeds. Engine noise is barely noticeable at low to mid speeds, only becoming audible at high RPMs, but it doesn’t feel intrusive. The seat comfort is good, and even long drives don’t cause fatigue. The rear air conditioning vents and USB ports enhance the riding experience for rear passengers.

In summary, the core strengths of the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 4Matic Coupe lie in its sporty coupe design, ample space, powerful performance, and comprehensive safety features (standard 7 airbags, 360-degree panoramic camera, active braking, etc.). Compared with its peers like the BMW X6 and Audi Q8, the GLE 450 Coupe offers a balanced performance in terms of luxury feel and technological features. The addition of the 48V mild hybrid system also improves power responsiveness and fuel efficiency. This car is ideal for families prioritizing design and luxury experiences or younger consumers seeking a balance between performance and practicality. Whether it’s for daily commutes, family outings, or short weekend road trips, it can meet these demands. Overall, the GLE 450 Coupe is a well-rounded luxury coupe SUV that combines aesthetics, performance, and practicality, and is worthy of consideration by potential luxury car buyers.

Previously, I drove a BMW X5, but I switched to the GLE Coupe mainly for its coupe design and interior. During the morning rush hour in Malaysia, the 3.0T + 48V mild hybrid system provides a smooth start, and the 9AT shifts almost seamlessly. However, the engine occasionally experiences slight vibrations during low-speed traffic following, but it’s not a big issue. On weekends, when taking my family to Genting Highlands, the 4Matic's traction is very stable on uphill roads, and the body roll in corners is also smaller compared to the X5. The interior's two 12.3-inch screens are brimming with a sense of technology, and the Burmester sound system makes listening to music on the highway extremely enjoyable. However, due to the coupe design, the rear headroom feels a bit cramped, and anyone over 180cm tall might feel their head pressing against the roof after sitting for a long time. The safety features are comprehensive, and the automatic emergency braking helped avoid an accident with a suddenly approaching motorcycle in Kuala Lumpur, which gives me a lot of reassurance.

This fastback turns heads on the road! That power when accelerating through corners makes me want to hit the mountain roads every day!

Sure! Here's the translation: Previously drove an E-Class, switched to the GLE Coupe purely for its sleek coupe design and luxurious feel. Safety gets 4 stars, mainly because it’s equipped with 7 airbags and active braking, but the body still wobbles a bit during high-speed cornering, not as stable as the old E-Class. Interior definitely gets 5 stars! The dual screens and Burmester sound system make traffic jams on Jalan Ampang in KL during morning rush hour less frustrating—listening to music and touching the leather steering wheel cuts the irritation in half. Took the family to Genting Highlands over the weekend, and the 3.0T + 4MATIC handles uphill drives very stably. The 21-inch tires provide enough grip, but the rear headroom feels a bit cramped compared to the regular GLE. My 175cm-tall son always complains about his head hitting the top. Overall, still satisfied; after all, the aesthetics and quality really turn heads on Malaysian roads!

Last week, I took my family to Genting Highlands during the rainstorm. The 3.0T+4Matic of the GLE Coupe was very stable on the mountain roads and didn’t float when crossing water, but the turbo lag was a bit obvious during sudden acceleration. The dual 12.3-inch screens in the interior provide a strong sense of technology, but the Burmester sound system felt slightly lacking under highway noise. The safety features are comprehensive, and lane-keeping was very helpful on the congested highway, but the automatic parking wasn't very user-friendly for narrow spaces. The coupe design attracted a lot of attention, definitely worth a 5-star rating!

Every time it rains heavily, driving on the highway is super steady, but the sloping roof takes longer to dry after a car wash than my procrastination!
