Specs

A-Segment small cars have always been a popular choice in the local market. These models focus on being economical, flexible, and practical, making them perfect for urban commuting and small families' daily needs. The 2018 Perodua Axia SE 1.0 AT, as the mid-range automatic variant of the series, accurately addresses the pain points of users who have limited budgets but still want comfort, thanks to its price of just under RM38,000, automatic transmission convenience, and relatively rich features. This time we got our hands on a real car to see if it truly meets most people's basic needs in terms of static experience, dynamic performance, and daily practicality.

Starting with the exterior, the design of the 2018 Axia SE is not aggressive but appears more refined compared to the base model in terms of details. The front maintains the rounded contours of the Axia family; the upper grille connects to both headlights with chrome accents, while the lower grille features a black honeycomb design, complemented by fog lights (a feature added in the SE version compared to the Standard G), resulting in a more layered visual impression. The side profile of the car is simple, and the 175/65 R14 tires are well-suited for the body, avoiding a top-heavy appearance. At the rear, the tail lights use LED sources, which offer decent recognition when illuminated at night. The lines on the rear bumper echo the front design, creating a cohesive and visually pleasing overall style.

Sitting inside, the interior is primarily made from plastic materials, but the SE version shows thoughtful detailing. The center console layout is clear, and the air conditioning control area adopts a traditional rotary knob and button design, making it intuitive to operate, even for beginners. The standard keyless entry and start function is a delightful surprise, adding convenience to daily use by eliminating the need to frequently take out the keys. The seats are fabric, with manually adjustable front seats. The padding of the backrest and cushion is not very thick, but the support is sufficient, and short rides won't feel uncomfortable. The rear seats can be folded as a whole, which can expand the trunk space when needed, making it suitable for occasionally carrying long items. In terms of space, the 2455mm wheelbase is standard for the A-Segment category. A front passenger with a height of 175cm will have a one-fist gap of headroom after adjusting the seating position. For rear passengers of the same height, legroom is slightly cramped, but it’s acceptable for short trips, making it suitable for small families or daily commuting. Storage space inside the car is adequate. The door panels feature storage compartments that can hold two bottles of water, and there is a small storage slot below the center console for items like phones or wallets. The front row also comes standard with a 220V power outlet, making it convenient for charging electronic devices.

In terms of dynamic performance, the 1.0L naturally aspirated three-cylinder engine has a maximum power of 68PS and a maximum torque of 89Nm, paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission. This powertrain leans towards comfort and efficiency. It delivers relatively smooth power during starts, making it suitable for steady driving and keeping in traffic. When pressing the accelerator deeply for acceleration, there is a noticeable gear-shifting delay, and the engine needs to rev above 4000 rpm to sense a significant power boost. For overtaking on highways, you need to reserve enough distance in advance. During daily driving, the transmission's shifting logic is relatively smooth without noticeable jerkiness, making it suitable for urban conditions. The suspension is comprised of a front MacPherson independent strut and a rear torsion beam non-independent setup, tuned for comfort. It absorbs most irregularities when driving over speed bumps or slightly uneven roads without being too harsh. However, on larger potholes, rear passengers might feel significant jolts. The steering wheel is light, making daily parking or U-turns quite easy. However, at high speeds, the steering feels somewhat vague and requires frequent corrections. The fuel consumption meets expectations, with an official combined fuel efficiency of 5L/100km. In our actual tests, combining city roads and a small amount of highway driving, the fuel consumption was approximately 5.5L/100km. With a 33L fuel tank, it can travel over 600km on a full tank, offering decent range without needing frequent refueling.

In terms of noise control, the Axia SE performs average. At low speeds, the engine noise is not significant, but once the speed exceeds 80km/h, wind noise and tire noise become noticeably louder, especially tire noise, which affects the cabin's tranquility. However, this is within the normal range for A-Segment vehicles. As previously mentioned, the comfort of the seats is decent; the fabric material offers good breathability, making long rides less stuffy. The rear row is equipped with air conditioning vents, which improves the summer experience for rear passengers.

In conclusion, the 2018 Perodua Axia SE 1.0 AT has clear core advantages: affordable pricing, the convenience of an automatic transmission, relatively rich features (keyless entry/start, front fog lights, electrically foldable side mirrors, etc.), and fuel efficiency. Compared to the Proton Iriz of the same class, it is more affordable and has better fuel consumption; compared to Perodua's own Standard G variant, the added features like front fog lights and electrically foldable side mirrors enhance daily usability. However, it also has shortcomings, such as cramped rear space, significant noise at high speeds, and limited power reserves. Overall, it is suitable for users with a limited budget who primarily need a car for urban commuting and small family outings, especially those who want an automatic transmission but do not want to spend too much. If you are looking for exceptional power or spaciousness, it might not be the best choice. However, if you need an economical, reliable, and practical car for daily use, the 2018 Axia SE 1.0 AT is a good option.

Owner of 2018 Perodua Axia Standard E 1.0 MT
As the owner of a 2018 Perodua Axia Standard E 1.0 MT, driving it in Malaysia for almost five years, I am overall quite satisfied with the experience. Let's talk about performance first. The 4-star rating is because it's really adequate for city commuting—Malaysia's roads are often congested, and the combination of a manual transmission and 1.0L engine makes starting and following traffic very nimble. Plus, the fuel consumption is surprisingly low, around 4.5L in the city. A single tank lasts a long time. However, on the highway, the acceleration feels a bit weak when exceeding 100km/h, especially when climbing hills where you have to downshift. This aspect is indeed not as good as a larger displacement car, but considering its positioning, I think the performance is already very good. Looking at the exterior, the 4-star rating is mainly due to its very appealing design. Although it's an A-segment compact car, the body lines are round and cute. The Halogen headlights look energetic during the day, and the LED tail lights have high recognition at night. Malaysia is hot, so I chose white for the body color, as it's dirt-resistant and doesn't absorb heat easily—this is very practical. However, it would be even better if there were more personalized color options, such as metallic blue or red, which might be more popular among young people. Overall, as a daily commuter car, the Axia's performance and appearance meet my needs, and its value-for-money is truly excellent.

Owner of 2018 Perodua Axia SE 1.0 MT
As the owner of the 2018 Perodua Axia SE 1.0 MT, after driving it in Malaysia for more than three years, I truly feel that this car is perfect for local road conditions! In terms of performance, although the 1.0L naturally aspirated engine only has 68 horsepower, the manual transmission feels exceptionally responsive — during the morning rush hour traffic in Kuala Lumpur, the clutch control is super flexible, making it easy to follow the traffic at low speeds; on weekends, when taking the family to the foothills of Genting Highlands, just downshifting two gears makes it easy to climb up, and the fuel consumption is ridiculously low. Driving in urban areas only consumes about 4.5L, and a full 33L tank can last for more than a month — it’s truly friendly for the working class! I’m also very satisfied with the interior. Although it’s an A-segment compact car, the equipment doesn’t cut corners: keyless entry/start is especially convenient; when carrying large bags of groceries, you don’t have to fish out the keys. The rear seats can be folded down, and last time I helped a friend move some small furniture, the 260L trunk turned into a large space in seconds, easily fitting a folding table and a small bookshelf. The manual air conditioning cools down extremely fast; in Malaysia’s 35-degree weather, it only takes two minutes after getting in the car to feel cool — a lifesaver in summer! The exterior is even more praiseworthy. The sporty kit and 14-inch wheels of the SE version look much sharper than the standard version. The red body is especially eye-catching on local streets, and several neighbors have asked me if I’ve modified it. The LED daytime running lights have high visibility during the day, the halogen headlights are bright enough at night, and with the electric folding mirrors, the attention to detail makes it feel nothing like a car that costs just over 30,000 MYR! All in all, I give full marks to this car for performance, interior, and exterior — it’s the perfect choice for family transportation in Malaysia!

Owner of 2018 Perodua Axia SE 1.0 AT
As the owner of the 2018 Perodua Axia SE 1.0 AT, having driven it in Malaysia for almost five years, I truly feel this little car is perfect for the local road conditions! Giving full marks for performance is not an exaggeration—although it's a 1.0L naturally aspirated engine, the throttle response is very responsive during Kuala Lumpur's morning rush hour traffic. It accelerates and follows other vehicles smoothly, never feeling underpowered. Last week, I took my family to Genting, and the gearbox shifted very smoothly while climbing hills, with no lagging gears, even when fully loaded with five people, it climbed steadily. The fuel consumption is even more surprising; with the air conditioning on in the city, it's only about 5.2L/100km. A full tank of fuel costing RM50 can last a week, which is great for working-class families! I'm also very satisfied with the exterior. The sporty kit and 14-inch wheels of the SE version are much more dynamic than the standard version, and the red body stands out in the parking lot. The LED daytime running lights are very eye-catching during the day, and the Halogen headlights provide adequate lighting at night. Under Malaysia's tropical sun, the car’s paint hasn’t faded much, and the quality is still well-maintained. I'll deduct one point from the interior mainly because the plastic feel is a bit strong. The dashboard and door panels are all hard plastic, but considering the price, it’s acceptable. However, the features are very practical. The keyless entry/start is especially convenient, the single-zone air conditioning cools super quickly (you know how summers are in Malaysia), and the rear seats can be folded down. Last time I went to IKEA to buy small furniture, folding the seats allowed me to fit everything perfectly. In summary, as a daily commuter and family car, the Axia SE truly holds its ground well. Its value for money is unbeatable!

Owner of 2018 Perodua Axia Advance 1.0 AT
As the owner of a 2018 Perodua Axia Advance 1.0 AT, after driving it in Malaysia for almost five years, I’m most satisfied with its interior design! Even though it’s an A-segment compact car, the layout of the dashboard is very reasonable. The button sizes are just right, and for someone like me who often adjusts the air conditioning or changes radio stations while stuck in traffic in KL, I can operate them blindly without making a mistake. The seats are fabric, and in Malaysia’s hot weather, they don’t feel stuffy. The rear seats can also be folded; the last time I helped a friend move small furniture, I folded them down and managed to fit a folding table without any problem. In terms of safety, I feel quite assured. Driving at 110km/h on the North-South Expressway is very stable. ABS and two airbags come as standard. Last time, while reversing on a narrow road in George Town, Penang, the rear radar and camera helped me avoid hitting a motorcycle parked by the roadside. The ISOFIX anchors also make it convenient when I take my little nephew along. However, it would be even better if there were two additional side airbags. Since there are many motorcycles in Malaysia, I still feel a bit concerned about changing lanes sometimes, so I deducted one point. But overall, it’s perfectly adequate for daily commuting!

Owner of 2018 Perodua Axia Standard G 1.0 MT
As the owner of a 2018 Perodua Axia Standard G 1.0 MT, having driven it in Malaysia for almost five years, I have a lot to say about its appearance and safety features! The appearance has to be rated full marks! The design of the Axia is really appealing in the A-segment—it has a rounded front paired with halogen + LED headlights. When driving on Kuala Lumpur’s LDP highway during the day, the sunlight makes it look particularly vibrant. The body lines are small yet practical with its 5-door hatchback design, making it easy to park in narrow spaces at Klang Valley shopping malls. My neighbor even asked if it was a new car, saying that it looks much more stylish than similarly priced Kancil models! I’ll give safety 4 stars; the performance is pretty good, but there are some minor regrets. The standard dual airbags, ABS, and rear parking sensors are practical when navigating traffic in Malaysian cities or driving on rural roads. Last time I was reversing in Ipoh’s old town, the sensors alerted me in time to avoid a motorcycle by the roadside—I was really thankful it didn’t get scratched! But it could be even better with a few more airbags or a reversing camera. After all, when reversing on kampung (village) dirt roads at night, solely relying on sensors can still feel a bit nerve-wracking. Overall, as a daily commuter car, I’m quite satisfied with these two aspects. It fits well with Malaysia’s driving scenarios!
