Specs

In Malaysia's A-segment sedan market, 1.3L naturally aspirated engine models with manual transmission have always been an important choice for budget-conscious consumers, and the 2023 Proton Saga 1.3 Standard MT is a popular option within this segment. With a starting price of RM 34,800, a 5-year or 150,000 km warranty, and practical features such as keyless entry, this car attracts many first-time car buyers or those seeking great cost performance. The main purpose of this test drive was to evaluate its actual performance in daily commuting and short trips to see if it can meet basic family needs.

From the exterior, the 2023 Saga Standard MT maintains Proton's family-style design. The front features a shield-shaped chrome grille, paired with irregularly shaped halogen headlights, offering high recognition. The side lines of the body are simple, with moderate front and rear overhang lengths. The 14-inch wheels are equipped with 175/65 R14 tires, in line with the positioning of vehicles in this segment. At the rear, the horizontally arranged taillights are connected by a chrome strip on the trunk lid, and the black plastic underbody bumper adds a hint of sportiness. The overall design leans towards practicality without excessive flamboyance, fitting its family car positioning.

Inside the cabin, the interior is dominated by a dark gray color scheme, and the dashboard layout is simple and straightforward. The instrument panel uses a traditional fluorescent analog design, clearly displaying basic information such as tachometer, speed, and fuel level. The center console area is not equipped with a touchscreen, instead retaining physical buttons and knobs, while the air-conditioning controls are manually adjustable, offering an intuitive operation suitable for users who do not rely on smart systems. The seats are upholstered in fabric, with manually adjustable front seats and a rear bench that supports split folding to expand trunk storage. In terms of storage, the front door panels have storage slots for water bottles, the area under the center console includes cup holders, and the glove compartment is of moderate capacity, meeting daily storage needs. Notably, the vehicle comes with a keyless entry system and a front-row 220V/230V power outlet, providing convenience for users.

In terms of space, the car length is 4335mm with a wheelbase of 2465mm, which is within the standard range for A-segment models. The front-row seating space is adequate, allowing a person with a height of 175cm to adjust the seat and still have about a fist of headroom. When two adults sit in the rear, legroom is about two fingers' width and headroom about one fist; overall, the space is reasonable and suited for short trips. If three adults sit in the back, the legroom for the middle seat is slightly cramped. The trunk offers a capacity of 420 liters, which can accommodate two 20-inch suitcases without issue. Folding down the rear seats allows for the storage of longer items, enhancing practicality.

As for performance, it is equipped with a 1.3L naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine delivering a maximum power of 70kW (95PS) and a maximum torque of 120N·m, paired with a 5-speed manual transmission. At takeoff, the clutch engagement point is clear, making it relatively easy for beginners to adapt. The power output at low RPMs is smooth, which is ideal for city commuting. When rpm reaches about 4000, torque peaks, improving acceleration, though overtaking requires downshifting in advance to achieve sufficient power. The manual transmission offers clear gear positions, moderate shift travel, and decent shift engagement, making daily driving effortless. The official combined fuel consumption is 6.7L/100km. During the test drive, fuel consumption in urban congested conditions was about 7.5L/100km, while highway driving delivered approximately 6.0L/100km. Fuel efficiency performance meets expectations.

The suspension and chassis features include a front MacPherson strut independent suspension and a rear torsion beam non-independent suspension. During everyday driving, the suspension is tuned for comfort, effectively filtering out most small bumps on the road. However, when passing speed bumps or uneven road surfaces, the rear seats may feel slightly more bumpy. The steering wheel is lightly weighted with average precision, making it suitable for city driving, but it may feel a bit vague during high-speed driving. The braking system consists of ventilated disc brakes at the front and drum brakes at the rear. The brake pedal travel is moderate, the braking force output is linear, and the vehicle maintains a stable posture during emergency braking.

In terms of driving comfort, the noise control inside the cabin is average. At high speeds, wind noise and tire noise become more noticeable, especially the 14-inch tire noise, which penetrates the cabin at speeds above 80km/h and affects the ride experience. The seat support is adequate, but prolonged seating may cause fatigue in the lower back. The manual transmission does not feature paddle shifters and does not involve energy recovery, offering an overall driving experience similar to traditional fuel-powered cars, suitable for users accustomed to manual transmissions.

In summary, the core advantage of the 2023 Proton Saga 1.3 Standard MT lies in its high cost-performance ratio. Priced at RM 34,800 and offered with a 5-year warranty and keyless entry system, it holds a competitive edge in its class. Compared to the Perodua Bezza 1.3 G MT in the same segment, the Saga Standard MT has a longer wheelbase, a larger trunk capacity, and comes equipped with a keyless entry system, making it more practical. However, the Bezza performs slightly better in terms of fuel efficiency and offers more safety features on some models.

To conclude, this car is suitable for budget-conscious first-time car buyers or families looking for a daily commuter. Its space is sufficient to meet the short-distance travel needs of small families, and the manual transmission provides good fuel economy with relatively low maintenance costs. If you are not seeking smart features and simply need a reliable vehicle for daily transportation, the 2023 Proton Saga 1.3 Standard MT is a worthy option to consider.

As a 2023 Saga 1.3 Premium AT owner, having driven it in Malaysia for half a year, I genuinely feel it's worth the RM41k price tag! The interior of the second-hand Vios I previously drove felt overly plasticky. After switching to the Saga, I was immediately impressed by its 5-star interior – the soft-touch dashboard and 7-inch touchscreen, which even feel classier than the segment peer Almera. During morning rush hour crawling near KLCC, the 4AT occasionally has slight jerks when shifting gears, but the car remains stable (standard ESP), and the 185 tires provide enough grip, allowing for confident lane changes without fuss. Over the weekend, when taking the family to the foot of Genting Highlands, the 1.3L naturally aspirated engine felt slightly sluggish on the uphill, but the air conditioning was sufficiently cold (a must in Malaysia!), and with the rear seats folded down, it could fit a baby stroller and a picnic box, maximizing practicality. The only minor drawback: no reverse camera, so beginners need to get used to relying on the sensors; however, it’s not an issue for experienced drivers. In terms of safety, dual airbags and front and rear sensors make city commutes feel secure overall. It's truly a national car that understands Malaysians!

Previously I drove a used Myvi, and after switching to the 2023 Saga Standard AT, the biggest impression is that the value-for-money is off the charts! At just over RM38k, it comes equipped with standard features like VSC and hill-start assist. During the morning rush hour on Jalan Ampang, it follows traffic very steadily. The 4AT transmission is not particularly fast but smooth, and the city fuel consumption is about 7L, which is slightly more efficient than the old Myvi. On weekends, I took my family to the foothills of Genting; the 1.3L engine needed a heavy push on the gas to climb, but it's sufficient for family use. The exterior and interior get 4 stars. Proton's new design looks sharper than the older models, and while the interior has a lot of plastic, it's durable and easy to clean. Even with three Malay friends in the back seat, it's not cramped. A minor gripe is the lack of a reverse camera; beginners will need to rely on the sensors. There's noticeable wind noise above 110km/h on highways. But at this price point, what more can you expect? With a 5-year/150,000km warranty, it's reliable for daily commuting and weekend outings. It's a no-brainer for Malaysian working-class people!

Previously, my manual Myvi was shaky, but after switching to the Saga Standard MT, it's so smooth! With 95 horsepower pulling a 1-ton car, handling bumper-to-bumper traffic on Jalan Ampang during rush hour is effortless. The clutch bite point is clear, and half-clutching is not tiring. On weekends, I took the whole family to the foothills of Genting; climbing hills in 5th gear may not have the turbo surge, but revving to 4000 RPM provides enough torque, and even with the air conditioning on full blast, it doesn’t feel sluggish. The interior has a lot of plastic but is dirt-resistant, and three Malay friends can sit in the back seat without feeling cramped. The 420L trunk fits camping gear just fine. A downside is the lack of a reverse camera, so beginners need to adapt to using the sensors; the 14-inch tires are a bit bouncy over speed bumps. But for RM35,000 with 5 years warranty and keyless entry, what more could you ask for?

Last week, I took my family for an outing at the foot of Genting Mountain. On the way, we encountered heavy rain. The 1.3L naturally aspirated engine struggled a bit while climbing, but the vehicle stability control and hill-start assist ensured that the slippery mountain road was non-slippery. A 4-star safety rating is quite reasonable. The exterior design is simple and pleasing, and the black body looks even more textured in the rain. The interior space is spacious enough; after folding the rear seats, we were able to fit in camping equipment. The manual air conditioning cools quickly, and the four speakers play nursery rhymes clearly. A 5-star interior rating is well-deserved.
