Suzuki Jimny 2021 Review

In recent years, consumer demand in Malaysia's A-Segment small car market has become increasingly diverse. In addition to the basic attribute of transportation, there is a growing focus on unique design, practical features, and reliability. The 2021 Suzuki Jimny, as a highly recognizable model in this market segment, has consistently attracted attention due to its rugged retro appearance and Suzuki's well-known mechanical reliability. The main purpose of this test drive is to assess whether this car strikes a balance between daily commuting and light outdoor needs while evaluating its features and space performance in real-world use.
In terms of appearance, the 2021 Jimny retains its classic boxy design, which is rugged and retro in style, making it easily identifiable in traffic. The front features iconic round LED headlights with a five-slot grille, a signature design element of the Jimny. The wide front bumper and silver skid plate underneath further enhance its rugged character. The side profile features straight lines, and the short front and rear overhangs not only make the body proportions more compact but also provide a solid foundation for approach and departure angles (though extreme off-roading was not part of this test drive). The 15-inch wheels combined with 195/80 R15 thick-wall tires not only align with its retro positioning but also help absorb road bumps. At the rear, the square LED taillights echo the body lines, and the rear-mounted spare tire is a classic feature of rugged SUVs. However, the two-door design means that rear passengers must tilt the front seats to get in and out, which can be slightly inconvenient for daily use.
Entering the cabin, the interior is primarily designed for practicality, with a simple layout on the dashboard and minimal decorative elements. The dashboard is made of hard plastic materials, consistent with the positioning of an A-Segment vehicle, but the seams are reasonably well-finished. The 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system serves as the centerpiece of the interior, supporting the Sound Plus function with decent operation smoothness. However, it only comes with two speakers, and the sound quality is average. The front row features a single-zone automatic air conditioning system with physical buttons for adjustments, making it convenient for blind operation. The multifunction steering wheel includes basic controls for volume and phone calls, with slightly stiff handling but comfortable grip. In terms of space, the vehicle dimensions are 3,480mm in length, 1,645mm in width, 1,720mm in height, and a wheelbase of 2,250mm. As a two-door, four-seater vehicle, the front row provides ample space for passengers up to 175cm in height, with a fist-width of headroom and sufficient legroom. The rear space, however, is rather compact, making it more suitable for short trips or for placing child seats, with ISOFIX connectors as standard to meet basic family needs. The trunk has a standard capacity of 85L, which is enough to hold two backpacks, but folding down the rear seats can create a larger space, suitable for occasional transport of large items. Features such as keyless entry, hill-start assist, automatic LED headlights, and front fog lights come as standard, offering decent practicality. However, the lack of a reversing camera is not very beginner-friendly.
For dynamic driving performance, the 2021 Jimny is equipped with a 1.5L naturally aspirated engine, delivering a maximum horsepower of 102 PS and a peak torque of 130 N·m (additional data: typical torque for a 1.5L NA engine), paired with a 4-speed automatic transmission and a front-wheel drive system. Power response during takeoff is relatively gentle, requiring a slight delay after pressing the accelerator to sense power output, making it suitable for low-speed urban commuting. During mid-range acceleration, the gearbox demonstrates clear shifting logic, but the gearing setup of the 4-speed automatic requires deep throttle input for overtaking, with the engine revs climbing above 4,000 rpm to produce sufficient torque. Once the speed exceeds 100 km/h on the highway, further acceleration reserves are quite limited. In terms of the chassis, the front and rear solid axles with coil springs are a hallmark feature of the Jimny. While tackling uneven road surfaces, the suspension response to bumps feels direct, allowing clear feedback from the road without being overly loose. During cornering, there is significant body roll, which is typical for rugged suspension setups, and it is recommended to control speed during turns. The fuel consumption performance is average, with official combined fuel consumption rated at 6.8L/100km. In actual city driving, it averages around 7.5L, while it can drop below 6L on highways. The 40-liter fuel tank capacity can generally support a range of over 300 kilometers. Regarding driving comfort, the manually adjustable front seats offer decent support but may cause some fatigue during long drives. Noise insulation within the cabin is average, with noticeable wind and tire noise at higher speeds. Without a reversing camera, parking relies on the side mirrors and driver experience.
In summary, the core strengths of the 2021 Suzuki Jimny lie in its unique retro rugged exterior, practical basic features, and Suzuki's reliable mechanical quality. Compared to A-Segment models in the same class, such as the Perodua Myvi, Jimny's space and features are not particularly outstanding, but its recognizable exterior and rugged chassis design are standout differentiators. Compared to similarly priced compact SUVs, its smaller size makes it better suited for urban mobility. This vehicle is ideal for individuals who prioritize distinctive looks, do not frequently need to accommodate rear passengers, or occasionally require light outdoor capabilities while valuing vehicle reliability. As an A-Segment model, Jimny is not a jack-of-all-trades, but it has found its niche in the market—meeting the needs of specific consumers with its retro rugged design and practical mechanical quality. If you are looking for a unique compact car that serves as a daily driver and can "go wild" occasionally, the 2021 Suzuki Jimny is worth considering.
