Toyota Vios 2019 Review

The B-segment sedan market in Malaysia has always been the core battleground for household and commuting needs. Consumers value reliability while also having clear expectations for rich features and value for money. As the top-tier version of the series, the 2019 Toyota Vios 1.5G not only continues the durability reputation of the Vios series but has also been upgraded in safety features and detailed experiences. In this test drive, we focus on whether it can stand out in the same class through its balanced performance, and also verify if the additional value of the top-tier version is worth purchasing.
From the exterior, the design of the 2019 Vios 1.5G looks younger than the previous model. The front features a large trapezoidal lower grille, paired with a slim upper grille and sharp LED daytime running lights on both sides, giving it a high degree of recognition. The body has smooth side lines, with a waistline extending from the front fender to the rear that enhances the sense of three-dimensionality. The 16-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels look more high-end compared to the 15-inch wheels on the 1.5E and 1.5J models. The tire specifications are 195/50R16, and the grip performance is worth anticipating. At the rear, the LED tail light assembly adopts a horizontal layout that corresponds with the body lines, while the chrome trim on the lower part of the rear bumper adds a touch of refinement. As for the lighting system, automatic headlights and front fog lights come as standard, offering decent convenience in daily use.
Inside the car, the interior of the 1.5G is primarily black, with the dashboard covered in soft materials that feel slightly more refined than the entry-level version. The center console has a simple layout, with a 6.8-inch touchscreen at its center, supporting basic multimedia functions. The operational smoothness is in line with the standards of this segment. The instrument cluster features a self-illuminating analog design, displaying information such as RPM, speed, and fuel consumption clearly. In terms of features, the 1.5G adds paddle shifters and front parking sensors compared to mid and low trims. A 360-degree panoramic camera is standard across all trims, making it friendly for parking beginners. The seats are manually adjustable but provide decent support. The rear seat supports a 60:40 split-folding configuration, which can expand the trunk space. Regarding space, the car has a length, width, and height of 4425mm, 1730mm, and 1475mm respectively, with a wheelbase of 2550mm. The front-row seating offers ample space, with about one fist of headroom for a passenger of 175cm; the rear legroom is approximately two fists, suitable for daily family use. The center floor is not highly raised, so temporarily seating three people is not very cramped. For storage, the door pockets can hold two bottles of water, the central armrest box and glove box have moderate capacity, and the trunk has a standard capacity of 506L, which can meet the needs of daily shopping or short trips.
In terms of performance, the 1.5G is powered by a 1.5L naturally aspirated engine, delivering a maximum horsepower of 107PS, with a peak torque output at 4200rpm. It is matched with a CVT transmission. The power response during start-up is smooth, making it suitable for city commuting. When stepping harder on the accelerator for speed, the CVT gearbox simulates shifting, raising the RPM to around 6000rpm, so overtaking requires reserving some extra space. The driving mode is only available in standard mode, but it suffices for daily use. As for handling, the steering is accurate, with minimal dead zones. The MacPherson front suspension is tuned for comfort, filtering bumps well when crossing speed bumps. The rear suspension uses a torsion beam design, which may cause slight residual vibrations on continuous bumpy roads, but the overall stability is good. During fuel consumption testing, the consumption was about 6.5L/100km in congested urban conditions and about 5.2L/100km on highways, close to the official combined fuel consumption of 5.8L/100km, reflecting standard fuel efficiency performance. In terms of noise control, the car interior is quiet at speeds below 60km/h, while tire and wind noise become progressively noticeable above 80km/h, but remain within an acceptable range.
The safety configuration is the highlight of the 2019 Vios series. The 1.5G model comes standard with 7 airbags (including knee airbags and front and rear curtain airbags), ESP body stability control, lane change assist, and hill start assist, leading the class in safety performance. Compared to the mid and low trimmed models, the main advantages of the 1.5G include 16-inch wheels, paddle shifters, and front sensors, which enhance the driving experience and convenience.
Overall, the core highlights of the 2019 Toyota Vios 1.5G are its well-balanced space performance, reliable power system, and comprehensive safety configuration. Although the additional features of the top trim version are not particularly extensive, they can meet the needs of users with attention to detail. Compared to similar models such as the Honda City, the Vios 1.5G has an advantage in safety configuration, and the price is relatively affordable. It is suitable for families who value reliability and safety, and it can handle both daily commutes and short trips. For consumers with a sufficient budget and a desire for better details, the 1.5G is a version worth considering in the Vios series.
