Competition in the B-segment market is becoming increasingly fierce, with consumers valuing practicality for daily commuting while also having higher demands for features and driving experience. The 2017 Ford Fiesta Sport+ 1.0 EcoBoost, as the flagship model in the lineup, has always been a popular choice in this segment due to the power advantages of its 1.0T three-cylinder engine and its enhanced safety features. In this test drive, we focus on evaluating its performance, space practicality, and overall driving experience in daily use to see if it can meet the needs of most family users.

In terms of appearance, the Fiesta Sport+ adopts a five-door hatchback design with compact and streamlined overall lines. The trapezoidal front grille with chrome accents has a high recognition factor; the side waistline extends from the front fender to the rear, enhancing the sporty feel; the rear light group design is simple and integrates well with the body. The lighting system features halogen light sources, with automatic headlights and front and rear fog lights as standard, which are sufficient for everyday use, though the brightness performance at night is average.

Inside, the interior style leans towards practicality, with a clear layout on the center console and simple, easy-to-understand button and knob operations. Most of the materials used are hard plastics, but the detailing is decent, without a pronounced sense of cheapness. The multifunction steering wheel supports basic audio adjustments and phone controls, making it convenient to operate; the front row is equipped with single-zone automatic air conditioning, which is easy to adjust and provides rapid cooling. In terms of core features, keyless entry, rain-sensing wipers, and electrically foldable side mirrors are included, improving daily convenience.

In terms of space, the Fiesta Sport+ has a wheelbase of 2489mm, which is within the mainstream level for this segment. The front-row seating space is ample, with a 175cm passenger having a fist's worth of headroom after adjusting the seat. The rear space is relatively compact, offering about two fingers of legroom for passengers of the same height. Long-distance seating might feel slightly cramped, though short-distance trips are not an issue. The trunk capacity is 276L, able to hold two 20-inch suitcases in its standard configuration. The rear seats support a 60:40 split-folding setup, which expands storage space when folded, increasing practicality. Additionally, the number of storage compartments inside the car is moderate, with the door panels and center armrest box accommodating small items.

In the power department, the Fiesta Sport+ is equipped with a 1.0L EcoBoost three-cylinder turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum power of 123PS, with peak torque available at 1400rpm, paired with a DCT dual-clutch transmission. In actual driving, the power response is active during the starting phase, with decent acceleration achieved by lightly pressing the accelerator. It performs comfortably when overtaking or changing lanes in urban traffic. When switched to Sport mode, the throttle sensitivity is further enhanced, and the transmission shifts faster, making the overall driving experience more dynamic. However, in low-speed traffic, the dual-clutch transmission occasionally exhibits slight shifts, though it doesn’t affect daily use significantly.

Regarding handling, the Fiesta Sport+ has precise steering with minimal play and clear directional accuracy. The body roll is well-controlled when cornering, and the suspension system, which uses front MacPherson independent suspension, copes well with bumpy roads, filtering out most minor vibrations while maintaining some road feel. The overall balance between comfort and stability is commendable. The fuel consumption is also worth mentioning, with an official combined figure of 5.3L/100km. During the actual test drive, fuel consumption was about 6.2L/100km in urban conditions and about 4.8L/100km on highways, putting its fuel efficiency among the top in its class.

One of the highlights of the safety configuration of the Fiesta Sport+ is its seven airbags, including front-seat side airbags and knee airbags, which offer an advantage compared to the Sport models in the same series (only two airbags). Additionally, features like electronic stability control, hill-start assist, and rear parking sensors are all standard, providing ample safety assurance for daily driving.

Overall, the core advantages of the Fiesta Sport+ lie in its responsive power, fuel efficiency, and comprehensive safety features. Compared with models of the same class, its 1.0T engine performs better than certain naturally aspirated engines, and the seven airbags make it more competitive. However, its compact rear space is a drawback, making it more suitable for young families or individual users who value driving experience and safety. For those who frequently need to carry rear-seat passengers, a vehicle with more spacious interiors might be more appropriate.

In conclusion, the 2017 Ford Fiesta Sport+ 1.0 EcoBoost is a well-balanced B-Segment car that stands out for its performance, fuel economy, and safety features. It is suitable for daily commuting and short family trips and is a worthy option to consider in this segment.

Reliable safety features, systems like ESC and ABS can effectively intervene in emergency situations
Cons
Some models lack sufficient power when driving at high speed, with insufficient power reserves during overtaking

This 2006 Fiesta Public has been running for nearly ten years. It’s more agile than electric cars when navigating city alleys or competing for parking spaces! The 1.6L engine responds promptly when you step on it, making overtaking a breeze. The back seat can fit three buddies comfortably even on highways. The only issue is that the AC needs to be turned on in advance, or the seats can get scorching hot at noon — but at this price point, what more can you ask for?

Previously, I drove the old model Myvi. Last year, I upgraded to the Fiesta Public, and it instantly felt like a step up! Among the sea of Japanese small cars on the streets of Malaysia, its appearance really stands out. The honeycomb grille and streamlined body always draw a second glance whenever I park near the LRT. Definitely worth 5 stars. As for performance, the 1.5L engine is super nimble during Kuala Lumpur's morning rush hour and zips through traffic smoothly. However, it slightly lacks power when overtaking trucks on the highway, so deducting 1 point seems fair. Safety-wise, it’s incredibly reliable. Last time, on a mountain road in Penang, I avoided a suddenly darting motorcycle, and the ESC intervened just in time to prevent skidding—solid 5 stars here. A minor gripe would be the narrow rear space. When taking my parents to Genting Highlands, my dad kept mentioning how he couldn't stretch his legs out after sitting for a while. Overall, it's perfect for young people commuting and enjoying weekend getaways!

Fiesta's interior texture is truly amazing, but this 1.0T always feels a bit underpowered when overtaking on slopes...

Last Wednesday after work, I encountered a heavy rainstorm, and the LDP highway turned into a parking lot. The wipers on the Fiesta were slow, and the windshield looked like it was covered in a layer of fog. I kept my eyes fixed on the car 10 meters ahead, not daring to lose focus. Suddenly, the car in front braked sharply, and I slammed on my brakes. At the moment when the ABS vibrated, the car body didn’t veer off course — this safety feature truly deserves a 4/5 rating. However, the car’s age is evident; the paint has been etched with small spots by acid rain, and the tail lights that seemed super cool back then now look a bit dim. Deducting 1 point for the appearance seems fair.

Previously, I drove the old Vios, but I switched to the Fiesta Sport+ last year, and I truly feel I made the right choice! Appearance: 4/5. With the sporty kit and 16-inch wheels, it looks much better than the Vios. Especially the red paint shines brilliantly under the Malaysian sun. Interior: 4/5. The materials feel solid, and the 7 airbags + automatic air conditioning are practical. However, manually adjusting the seats is a bit troublesome. During the morning rush hour, the 1.0T+DCT responds promptly, with torque kicking in at just 1400rpm, making it very agile for weaving through traffic. The fuel consumption is only 5.5L/100km, which is much more economical than the Vios. On weekends, taking the family to Genting, the power is sufficient for climbing hills, and the 60:40 folding rear seats can accommodate a baby stroller and luggage. A minor drawback is that the halogen headlights aren’t bright enough, so you need to be extra cautious when driving on the highway at night. Overall, being able to get this level of handling and features for just over RM90,000 is really worth it!
