2017 Jaguar XE Prestige 2.0 200PS Review

In recent years, the D-segment luxury sedan market in Malaysia has remained stable, with the German Big Three dominating the mainstream market. However, many consumers still hope to find an option that balances sportiness with a British-style sense of refinement. The 2017 Jaguar XE Prestige 2.0 200PS is precisely a model aimed at meeting this demand. As Jaguar's entry-level luxury sedan, its core selling points are the driving pleasure derived from its rear-wheel-drive layout and its relatively solid configuration among competitors in the same class. This time, we got a chance to test the vehicle to verify whether its sporty attributes live up to the claims, while also evaluating whether it can meet family needs as a daily driver.
Starting with the exterior, the XE Prestige continues Jaguar's sporty design style, with compact and sleek overall lines that are free of unnecessary complicated decorations. At the front, the iconic large mesh grille adorned with chrome trim is highly recognizable. The headlights on both sides use a combination of LED and xenon light sources, featuring a sharp design with a slightly slanted appearance, and automatic headlights and daytime running lights come standard, making daily use very convenient. On the sides, the waistline runs from the front fender to the rear, complemented by 17-inch alloy wheels, achieving well-proportioned aesthetics and a typical rear-wheel-drive sedan posture. The rear design is relatively simple, with LED taillights adopting a smoked finish to echo the front, while a small spoiler on the trunk lid adds a touch of sportiness. Notably, front fog lights and rain-sensing wipers are also standard, with none of the details being compromised despite it being an entry-level version.
Sitting inside, the materials and layout of the interior reflect the luxurious British touch. The center console is wrapped in soft materials, accented with a small amount of chrome trim. While it does not overemphasize high-tech elements, the overall craftsmanship feels solid. The instrument cluster features traditional backlit analog displays, offering clear and comprehensive information. The central display is of moderate size with a straightforward operating logic, but compared to some competitors in the same class with larger screens, it lacks a bit in terms of technological sophistication. In terms of configuration, keyless entry and start come standard, making daily entry and exit very convenient. The front seats have six-way electric adjustments with memory function, providing good support and remaining comfortable during long drives. The rear seats have a 40:20:40 split-folding capability, allowing flexible expansion of trunk space. With dual-zone automatic climate control that provides air vents for both the front and rear rows, rear passengers' comfort is well catered for. Additionally, a 220V/230V power outlet is standard, making it convenient to charge electronic devices during long trips.
Regarding space, the dimensions of the XE Prestige are 4672mm x 1850mm x 1416mm, with a wheelbase of 2835mm, placing it in the middle range among D-segment sedans. The front seating space is sufficiently spacious; for passengers who are 180cm tall, there is about a fist's worth of headroom after adjusting the seat. The rear seating space is relatively tight; for passengers of the same height, there’s about two fists of legroom and one fist of headroom. Although suitable for daily family use, the comfort of the middle rear passenger on long journeys may be slightly compromised. The trunk offers a capacity of 450L, which can accommodate 2-3 suitcases in its regular state. With the rear seats folded flat, it can also hold longer items, adequately meeting the practical needs of a family. In terms of storage, the door pockets, center armrest storage, and cup holders are of average size, providing enough space for everyday items.
Power and driving experience are the core advantages of the XE Prestige. It is equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged engine with a maximum horsepower of 203PS and a peak torque that kicks in at 1750rpm, paired with an 8AT transmission and rear-wheel-drive layout. During actual driving, the initial response is very brisk, with no noticeable turbo lag; a light press on the accelerator delivers power output. Mid-to-high-speed acceleration is also good, and when overtaking, a deeper press on the accelerator prompts active gear downshifts, providing a continuous push-back feeling. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 7.7 seconds, and our real-world experience aligns with this figure. There are two driving modes available: Normal and Sport. Switching to Sport mode makes the throttle response sharper, the steering wheel heavier, and paired with paddle shifters, driving pleasure is noticeably enhanced.
In terms of handling, the rear-wheel-drive layout is a highlight of the XE Prestige. The steering wheel is precise with minimal play, and when cornering, the dynamic feedback of the car body is clearly felt. The combination of the front double-wishbone independent suspension and rear multi-link independent suspension is tuned for sportiness, providing good support. Body roll is well-controlled during cornering, instilling confidence in the driver. However, the relatively stiff suspension may transmit minor vibrations into the cabin when dealing with common potholes on Malaysian roads, which may slightly affect the comfort of rear passengers. The braking system performs stably, with a linear pedal feel and evenly distributed braking force. In emergency braking situations, the vehicle maintains composure.
As for fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 7.5L/100km. During our test of mixed urban and highway conditions, the fuel consumption was approximately 8.2L/100km. Considering its performance and rear-wheel-drive layout, this fuel efficiency is average for its class, and the daily running cost is not too high. Regarding noise control, there is some wind and tire noise at high speeds, but it remains within an acceptable range. Engine noise can be heard in the cabin during rapid acceleration, but it sounds deep and is not unpleasantly harsh.
In summary, the main advantages of the 2017 Jaguar XE Prestige 2.0 200PS are clear: the driving pleasure brought by its rear-wheel-drive layout is unmatched by most front-wheel-drive models in the same class. It also offers a solid configuration and exhibits distinctive British style, with a 5-year/150,000-kilometer warranty providing peace of mind for consumers. Compared to rivals in the same class from German brands, its handling has a greater edge, with no significant shortcomings in terms of configuration. However, the rear-seat space and sense of technology are slightly weaker. This car is suitable for two types of customers: first, young consumers who enjoy driving and value rear-wheel-drive handling pleasure; second, families seeking an exclusive luxury experience and unsatisfied with common German cars. If you're looking for a luxury sedan that can meet your daily commuting needs while also offering an enjoyable driving experience on weekends, the XE Prestige is a great choice.
