The compact luxury SUV market has always been a popular choice for young middle-class individuals and refined families in Malaysia—requiring both brand appeal and daily practicality. The 2017 Range Rover Evoque 2.0 Si4 5-door SE is a typical contender in this niche segment. It is equipped with a 240PS turbocharged engine and an all-wheel-drive system, with standard features such as Meridian audio system, electric memory seats, and other standout configurations. In this test drive, we focus on one question: is it just "all about the looks," or can it balance luxury and practicality?

From a distance, the Evoque's design still retains the Range Rover family's distinctive identity: the tough waistline runs from the hood to the rear of the car, and the floating roof paired with 20-inch alloy wheels makes the side profile appear compact yet dynamic. The front features a blacked-out grille paired with LED daytime running lights, which are highly recognizable when illuminated. The rear LED taillights adopt the iconic wrap-around design, making it instantly recognizable as a Land Rover even at night. In terms of details, the chrome decoration around the front fog lights and the body-colored exterior mirrors add a luxurious touch, preventing the overall style from appearing overly sporty.

Sitting inside, the first thing that stands out is the material quality of the interior—large areas are wrapped in soft leather with metallic trims, providing a delicate touch that matches the positioning of a luxury SUV. The center console layout is simple, and although the 8-inch touchscreen might not be considered a "giant screen" by today's standards, it is responsive, with a clear and logical menu structure. In terms of features, the front seats support 8-way electric adjustment with driver seat memory function, making it easy for a driver with a height of 175cm to find a comfortable seating position. Rear air conditioning vents and USB ports are essential for family users. The 60:40 split-folding rear seats can increase the trunk space from 575L to an even larger capacity, making room for items like strollers or golf bags. A noteworthy highlight is the Meridian 11-speaker audio system. When playing pop music, the bass is rich, the midrange is clear, and it enhances the experience during daily commutes or long-distance drives.

In terms of space, the Evoque's wheelbase measures 2660mm, which is standard for a compact SUV. The front row provides a headroom of one fist and two fingers (for a driver 175cm tall), with ample legroom. The rear seats comfortably accommodate two adults, offering one fist of legroom and just enough headroom for one fist. Although not exceptionally spacious, it suffices for short family trips. For storage, the door pockets can hold two 500ml bottles of water, the central armrest box is deep enough for a wallet and phone, and the front cup holders are equipped with limiters, reflecting well-thought-out details.

In terms of performance, the 2.0T turbocharged engine delivers a maximum horsepower of 240PS and reaches peak torque at 2000rpm, paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission. When you lightly press the accelerator at start-up, the power response is very prompt, with no noticeable turbo lag. When accelerating past 80km/h and pressing the accelerator harder, the transmission shifts down quickly, providing sufficient confidence for overtaking. The all-wheel-drive system performs stably on regular paved roads, with precise steering and minimal play in the steering wheel. When cornering, body roll is well-controlled. Regarding the suspension, the front MacPherson and rear multi-link setup is tuned for comfort. It absorbs most of the bumps when driving over speed bumps or uneven roads, with no significant jolts. However, on continuous gravel roads, passengers in the rear seats might still feel some minor vibrations.

In terms of fuel consumption, we drove 50km each in urban congested roads and highways, with an average fuel consumption of about 8.2L/100km, slightly higher than the official 7.8L. However, considering Malaysia's traffic conditions, this result is within an acceptable range. The braking performance was stable, with a braking distance of approximately 38 meters at 100km/h, which meets the standard for its class. Noise control is excellent, with wind noise and tire noise barely noticeable at 120km/h on the highway, only a slight engine sound enters the cabin, which does not affect in-car conversations.

To summarize, the core advantages of the 2017 Range Rover Evoque 2.0 Si4 SE edition are clear: First, Land Rover's premium brand value and highly recognizable design; second, the luxurious standard configurations (Meridian sound system, power memory seats); and third, its balanced performance and AWD system. Compared with competitors like the BMW X1 or Mercedes-Benz GLA, it offers richer configurations and a more mature AWD system, but the rear seating space is slightly inferior to the X1.

This car is suitable for two types of consumers: young buyers who value brand and design, as it satisfies daily commuting or short weekend trips with its sense of luxury and performance; and small families, as although rear space is not top-notch, storage capacity and configurations are sufficient for family use. If you're looking for a luxury compact SUV that balances style and practicality, the Evoque SE edition is worth considering—it may not be the ultimate choice, but it is definitely one of the most well-rounded options.

Every day in traffic jams, crawling like a snail; the Evoque's 2.0T turbo surges forward at a push, making overtaking and lane changing super quick! On rainy days, the four-wheel drive is incredibly stable, and the automatic parking feature saves someone like me who's bad at parking. But without a rearview camera, I have to rely on my intuition. However, the 11 Meridian speakers make listening to music during traffic jams so enjoyable!

Last week, I took my family for an outing at the foot of Cloud Summit Mountain. A sudden downpour made the mountain roads slippery. Evoque's LED headlights cut through the rain, the Meridian sound system played lullabies loud enough to drown out the rain, and the kids in the backseat slept peacefully. The leather interior feels delicate but the seams are slightly loose, while the 8-way electric seats supported my back for my continuous 3-hour drive. The automatic parking system saved the day in the narrow parking spot at the foot of the mountain, and the 7 airbags and electronic stability control system gave me peace of mind on slippery turns. The 2.0T engine was not underpowered when climbing, although the rear air conditioning felt slightly weak. The exterior has a high head-turning rate, but the rims are prone to trapping mud. Full marks for safety features, one point deducted for interior and exterior, overall satisfied.

The rural road damaged by the heavy rain last week, driving it didn't even scrape the chassis! The power of the 2.0T in the mud was really stable when stepped on.
