2017 Land Rover Range Rover Sport SDV6 3.0 Diesel HSE Review

In the luxury mid-to-large SUV market, the Land Rover Range Rover Sport has always occupied a place with its label of "balancing on-road performance and off-road capability." The 2017 SDV6 3.0 Diesel HSE, as the core configuration of the series, targets high-end users who seek daily comfort and the occasional light off-road experience with its 3.0L diesel turbo engine, luxurious features, and Land Rover's signature all-terrain capability. In this test drive, we focus on evaluating its power response, practical interior space, and all-terrain system's performance to see if it can meet Malaysian consumers' diverse demands for a luxury SUV.
In terms of appearance, the 2017 Range Rover Sport maintains the family-style sporty design. Its overall lines are smoother compared to the standard Range Rover, with a honeycomb grille on the front paired with smoked LED headlights that are highly recognizable. A side waistline extends from the fender to the rear, and with 20-inch aluminum alloy wheels, it retains the toughness of an SUV while adding a touch of dynamism. The LED tail lights adopt a surrounding design, creating a striking effect when lit, while the dual-exhaust layout enhances its performance-oriented image. Detail-wise, the addition of front fog lights and rain-sensing wipers makes it better suited to Malaysia's variable weather conditions.
Stepping inside, the sense of luxury in the interior is mainly reflected in the materials and configuration. The dashboard is wrapped in soft-touch injection molding material, with metallic trim accents, providing a solid tactile feel. The 10-inch touchscreen infotainment system is centrally located, with a clear interface and smooth operation. Although it doesn’t feature the newest infotainment system, basic functions like navigation and Bluetooth connectivity can meet daily needs. The seats are one of the highlights: the front seats offer 16-way power adjustment with heating and memory functions, providing excellent support and wrapping; even long drives won't cause fatigue. The rear seats support a 60:40 split-folding ratio, offering flexibility for expanding the trunk space. In terms of space, the vehicle measures 4,850mm in length, 2,073mm in width, and 1,780mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,923mm. The front row provides ample headroom and legroom, and a passenger of 180cm sitting in the rear has about two fists’ worth of space for their knees, more than enough for family outings. The trunk volume is 784L in standard configuration and can be further expanded by folding down the rear seats, making it no problem to place large pieces of luggage. As for features, dual-zone automatic air conditioning, independent rear air conditioning, a 220V power outlet, and keyless entry/start are all included, offering great convenience.
Regarding performance, the 3.0L V6 diesel turbo engine delivers a maximum power of 306PS, with peak torque available from 1,500-1,750rpm, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. During actual driving, the power response is quick at the start, with virtually no lag when the turbo kicks in. A slight press on the accelerator results in plentiful torque output, and during overtaking, pressing the accelerator deeper prompts the transmission to downshift actively, providing on-demand power. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time of 7.3 seconds is outstanding among diesel SUVs. The driving modes offer several options: in normal mode, it leans towards comfort with light steering, ideal for daily commuting; in sport mode, the steering becomes heavier and the transmission shifts more aggressively, delivering a more engaging driving experience. In terms of fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 7.5L/100km. During the test drive, urban driving yields about 9-10L/100km, while highway conditions reduce it to around 7L. For a vehicle weighing 2.1 tons, this performance is commendable.
The handling and chassis performance also align with the positioning of a luxury SUV. The combination of front double-wishbone and rear multi-link independent suspension effectively filters out fine vibrations when driving on bumpy roads, and there is no obvious stiffness when passing speed bumps. When cornering at high speeds, the body roll is well-controlled, and the suspension provides sufficient support, giving a strong sense of confidence. The full-time four-wheel-drive system, paired with Land Rover's Terrain Response system, performed satisfactorily on lightly unpaved roads, even though we didn't do any extreme off-road testing: when driving through muddy sections, the system automatically distributes power to maintain vehicle stability, and the hill-start assist function provides support when starting on slopes. In terms of noise control, the diesel engine noise is slightly noticeable at idle; however, while driving, wind noise and road noise are well suppressed, resulting in excellent cabin quietness.
In conclusion, the core advantage of the 2017 Range Rover Sport SDV6 3.0 Diesel HSE lies in its balance: it offers the practicality and efficiency of diesel power combined with decent performance. Its luxurious features and spacious interior can meet family needs, while its all-terrain capability sets it apart from competitors in the same segment (such as the BMW X5 and Mercedes GLE). However, compared to newer models, its onboard system appears slightly outdated, which is a point to note.
The target audience for this vehicle is clear: first, users who prioritize family trips and require spacious interiors and comfortable features; second, consumers who occasionally venture into light off-roading and demand vehicle capability; and third, drivers who appreciate the fuel economy and torque output of a diesel engine. If your budget is around 800,000 MYR and you're looking for a mid-to-large luxury SUV that balances luxury, performance, and off-road capability, this would be a sound choice.
Overall, while the 2017 Range Rover Sport SDV6 3.0 Diesel HSE is not the latest model, it still boasts strong competitiveness thanks to its solid mechanical quality, abundant features, and the appeal of the Land Rover brand. With its well-rounded performance, it proves itself capable of not only handling daily commutes but also occasional outdoor explorations, making it a "versatile" luxury SUV.
