Specs

In the Malaysian luxury mid-size SUV market, the 2017 Land Rover Range Rover Sport V8 5.0 Supercharged HSE Dynamic has always been a popular choice that balances performance with brand appeal—after all, there aren't many SUVs that can fit a 5.0-liter supercharged V8 engine inside. This time, we got our hands on the actual vehicle, and the key purpose is to verify whether its performance truly matches the name "Sport," while also evaluating whether its daily practicality meets family or business needs.

Starting with the exterior, the vehicle retains the robust lines of the Range Rover family, but the Sport version is noticeably more aggressive. The front end features a large honeycomb grille paired with smoked LED headlights, delivering high recognition. The body’s side profile showcases a waistline that runs from the fenders to the rear, and the 21-inch alloy wheels (front tire size 275/45 R21) further enhance its sporty stance. At the rear, the dual exhaust layout and spoiler design clearly indicate its performance-oriented positioning. The lighting system is fully equipped with LED, and both automatic headlights and daytime running lights come as standard, making it convenient for daily use.

Stepping into the interior, the cabin continues Land Rover’s luxurious vibe. The center console is wrapped in soft materials and complemented by metal trims, delivering a tactile and visually premium experience. The 14-way power-adjustable front seats come with memory functions, offering a wide range of adjustments and good support. The rear seats can be folded down in a 60:40 split. With a vehicle length of 4850mm and a wheelbase of 2923mm, a passenger with a height of 180cm sitting in the rear has about two fists of legroom and one fist of headroom, making it well-suited for daily family use or business receptions. In terms of features, it comes with keyless entry, 360-degree parking camera, automatic parking, dual-zone automatic air conditioning (rear air conditioning is standard), a 220V power outlet, and more, meeting the needs of most usage scenarios. The trunk has a capacity of 784L, which can be expanded by folding down the rear seats—a storage capacity considered mainstream for its class.

The engine is the highlight of the vehicle: a 5.0-liter supercharged V8 engine with a maximum power output of 511PS and a maximum torque of 625N·m (official data), paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. During actual driving, you can feel the abundant low-end torque right from the start. A slight tap on the accelerator provides a noticeable push-back sensation, and the official figure of 0-100km/h acceleration in 5.2 seconds is indeed achievable in real-world conditions. When switched to sport mode, the transmission’s shift logic becomes more aggressive, with quicker downshifts. During overtaking, pressing the accelerator deeply results in almost no delay in power response. In normal mode for daily driving, the power delivery smooths out, making it suitable for urban commuting.

In terms of handling, the front double wishbone and rear multi-link independent suspension system are tuned towards sportiness while maintaining a certain level of comfort. The steering wheel is precise with minimal play, and body roll is well-controlled during cornering, with stable performance at high speeds. When driving on bumpy roads, the suspension filters out most small vibrations, though the vehicle can slightly sway when encountering larger potholes—still within an acceptable range overall. The four-wheel-drive system performs as expected, ensuring traction during daily driving and handling occasional unpaved roads. However, as a city-oriented SUV, its primary focus is still on-road performance. Regarding fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 13.8L/100km. In actual city driving, it’s approximately 15-16L, while on highways, it can drop to around 12L. For a 5.0L displacement vehicle, this fuel efficiency is considered normal.

In terms of ride comfort, the noise insulation performance is commendable. At speeds below 100 km/h, wind noise and tire noise are well controlled. Engine noise is not obvious in normal mode, and only a deep V8 roar is heard when stepping hard on the accelerator in sport mode. The seat provides good support and wrapping, so long drives won't feel tiring. The automatic start-stop function engages and disengages smoothly, without any noticeable jolting sensation.

In summary, the core advantages of the 2017 Range Rover Sport V8 5.0 Supercharged HSE Dynamic lie in its performance and brand appeal, while its features and space also meet family usage needs. Compared to its class rivals like the BMW X5 M or Mercedes-Benz GLE 63, its off-road capability and brand recognition are more prominent, though its fuel consumption is relatively high. This car is suitable for two types of customers: one is consumers pursuing performance while also needing to accommodate family use; the other is users who value brand quality and occasionally require it for business purposes. Overall, it is a model that strikes a good balance between performance, luxury, and practicality, making it suitable for those who want driving enjoyment without sacrificing comfort.

Pros
Powerful performance, 511 horsepower provides strong thrust, easy overtaking, 0-100 km/h in 5 seconds
Full-time four-wheel drive system offers stability, excellent performance on slopes and muddy roads, minimal body roll when cornering
Rich safety features, practical airbags and 360-degree cameras to ensure driving safety
Cons
Fuel consumption is relatively high, reaching up to 18L/100km with air conditioning in urban areas.
The rear space is slightly cramped, and it's a bit tight for three big guys to sit.

Previously drove a 3 Series, always felt it lacked some "presence." After switching to the Range Rover Sport 5.0 Supercharged, during the Jalan Ampang morning rush hour, a deep press on the accelerator easily overtakes those sluggish MPVs, and the 511 horsepower push-back feeling startled my friend in the passenger seat. Took the family to Genting Highlands over the weekend, and the full-time four-wheel drive felt as stable as being "glued" to the road while climbing mountain routes. Cornering had much less body roll than expected. The safety features are fully equipped; last time we were rear-ended on the LDP highway, all the airbags deployed, and the whole family was unharmed. The only downside is the fuel consumption—18L/100km with the air conditioning on in the city. A full 105L tank only lasts about 500 kilometers. But considering the V8 roar and head-turning rate, it's worth it!

Last week, I took my family to Cameron Highlands. The 511-horsepower V8 supercharged engine responded instantly during climbs, making overtaking effortless. After the heavy rain on muddy roads, the full-time four-wheel drive remained very stable. The leather interior feels premium, but the rear space is slightly cramped. Safety features are fully equipped, and the 360-degree camera system was very helpful on the narrow mountain roads. The exterior is imposing and has a high head-turning rate, but the fuel consumption of 13.8L/100km is a bit painful. Overall, the performance is strong, safety is reliable, and it’s worth considering.

After three years of driving the Range Rover Sport 5.0 supercharged, every time I hit the gas pedal, I'm still startled by the power — 0 to 100 km/h in 5 seconds is no joke. Passing cars during the morning rush feels like slicing through tofu. Three big guys sitting in the back don't feel cramped, but the 13.8L fuel consumption in urban areas does hurt a bit. Still, with this sound and presence, it's worth it!
