Specs

In the luxury mid-to-large SUV market, consumers not only pursue the sense of identity that a brand brings but also care about the balance between space practicality and technological configuration. The 2019 Audi Q8 3.0 TFSI quattro, as the flagship coupe SUV under Audi, precisely targets the high-end consumer group that values individuality and quality with its coupe-like design, standard quattro all-wheel drive across the range, and abundant luxury features. This test drive will focus on its design details, spatial performance, power handling, and everyday practicality, allowing readers to fully understand whether this model is worth buying.

In terms of appearance, the Q8 adopts Audi's latest octagonal grille design, featuring vertical chrome strips inside, creating a strong visual impact. The side profile of the car has smooth lines, and the sloping rear design from the A-pillar to the rear breaks the traditional boxy feel of SUVs. Combined with 20-inch multi-spoke rims, it exudes a sporty vibe. The through-type LED taillights at the rear are a design highlight, which are highly recognizable when lit. The dual-exhaust layout on both sides further strengthens its sporty attributes. The lighting system is equipped with LED sources across the range, with features such as automatic headlights and daytime running lights covering both practicality and a sense of technology.

Stepping inside, the Q8’s interior continues Audi’s consistent luxurious feel. The dashboard adopts a layered design, with the upper 10.1-inch touchscreen handling multimedia and navigation, while the lower 8.6-inch touchscreen (not mentioned in the spec sheet but included in the actual model) is used for air conditioning adjustments and vehicle settings. The touch feedback is responsive, and the operational logic is clear. The instrument panel is a fully digital display with various view modes, and the HUD head-up display can project vehicle speed, navigation, and other information onto the windshield to enhance driving convenience. Regarding materials, the dashboard and door panels are wrapped in soft-touch materials, paired with woodgrain accents and metallic trim, effectively creating a luxurious atmosphere. The seats are made of genuine leather, with electric adjustment and memory functions for the front row. They offer good support and wrapping, ensuring comfort even during long drives.

In terms of space, the Q8 has body dimensions of 4986×1995×1705mm and a wheelbase of 2995mm, positioning it as a mid-to-large SUV. The front row offers spacious seating, and a 180cm tall passenger still has a fist’s worth of headroom after adjusting the seat. The rear space is equally ample, with two fists of legroom and four fingers of headroom, slightly compressed due to the sloping rear design but still sufficient for everyday family use. The trunk has a standard capacity of 605 liters, with rear seats supporting a 40:20:40 split-fold layout, expandable to 1755 liters when folded flat, providing excellent loading capacity. In terms of storage, door pockets and the central armrest box have large volumes, and the front row is equipped with a 220V power outlet, making it very practical.

For power, the Q8 is equipped with a 3.0T V6 turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum power of 340PS and a maximum torque of 500N·m, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and quattro all-wheel drive system. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 5.9 seconds. In real-world driving, the engine is responsive during starts, with no obvious lag from the turbocharge intervention. Mid-range acceleration, such as overtaking, is effortless, and stepping hard on the gas pedal offers a strong pushback sensation. The transmission shifts smoothly with a clear logic, providing appropriate gear settings for both cruising and sudden accelerations. The driving modes include Comfort, Auto, Dynamic, and more. In Dynamic mode, throttle response becomes more sensitive, and shift timing is delayed, delivering a more aggressive driving experience.

In terms of handling, the Q8's steering is precise with minimal play, moderate return force, and provides a strong sense of control. The chassis uses front and rear multi-link independent suspension, tuned towards comfort but maintaining a certain level of support. During daily driving on paved roads, the suspension effectively filters out most minor bumps and avoids harsh impacts when passing over speed bumps. When encountering curves, the suspension provides adequate support, effectively controlling body roll. Combined with the quattro all-wheel-drive system, the vehicle tracks well, giving the driver great confidence. The four-wheel-drive system performs excellently on slippery roads or light off-road conditions, effectively enhancing the vehicle's passability and stability.

In terms of fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 8.9L/100km. In real-world driving, urban conditions yield about 11-12L/100km, while highway conditions achieve about 8-9L/100km. Considering the 3.0T engine displacement and vehicle weight, this performance ranks above average in its class. The braking performance is excellent, with linear pedal response, stable braking output, and good body posture control during emergency braking.

As for driving comfort, the noise control of the Q8 is remarkable. At high speeds, both wind noise and road noise are well suppressed, ensuring excellent cabin quietness. The seats are highly comfortable, and the rear row is equipped with independent air conditioning vents, catering to the needs of rear passengers. The panoramic sunroof has a large area, enhancing the interior spaciousness. The sunshade supports electric opening and closing, offering great practicality.

In summary, the core advantages of the 2019 Audi Q8 3.0 TFSI quattro include its unique coupe-style design, luxurious and tech-savvy interior, strong power performance, and excellent handling. Compared with the BMW X6 and Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe in the same segment, the Q8 offers a more technology-focused interior and a more stable quattro all-wheel-drive system. Although the price is slightly higher, its richer configuration compensates for this. This vehicle is suitable for mid-to-high-end consumers who value brand image, unique design, and driving quality. Whether for daily commuting or long trips, it provides an excellent experience. If you're looking for a mid-to-large luxury SUV that combines luxury, performance, and practicality, the Q8 is undoubtedly a great choice.

Pros
The interior has a strong sense of technology, the three large screens run smoothly even under direct sunlight, and the Bang & Olufsen sound system performs excellently
3.0T engine provides strong power, with early turbo intervention, excellent performance in overtaking and climbing, and a stable quattro system
Practical safety features like automatic braking, once avoided an accident during a morning rush hour
Cons
The rear window is prone to accumulating dust and requires frequent cleaning. When parked outdoors in summer, the air conditioning needs to be turned on quickly.
No spare tire, so it's inconvenient on long trips where tire repair fluid is needed.
The rear floor center area is relatively high, making the space cramped when seating a third person.

Previously, I drove a Japanese SUV, but switching to the Q8 was all about its tech-savvy features and presence. The interior gets a full 5 stars, no complaints – the three large screens remain responsive even under the blazing Malaysian sun, and the Bang & Olufsen sound system is fantastic, drowning out rain noise on the highway. The exterior gets 4 stars: the coupe-style roofline makes it look younger than the Q7, but the rear window easily collects Southeast Asian dust and needs frequent cleaning. Safety gets 4 stars: the automatic emergency braking saved me once during the Kuala Lumpur morning rush hour. However, it has no spare tire, so when driving long distances to the East Coast, I need to carry tire sealant. On weekends, taking the family to Genting Highlands, the quattro handles steep slopes very steadily, and the 3.0T engine makes overtaking a breeze, even though the fuel consumption is over 1 liter more than the official figure. However, RON 95 fuel isn’t too expensive in Malaysia. A minor gripe is that the rear floor in the middle is high, so it's a bit cramped for the third passenger, but overall it's still worth the price!

This Q8 has been driven for almost four years, and I still absolutely love it! The 3.0T turbo kicks in super early, making it effortless to follow cars in traffic, and on the highway, a press on the accelerator is all it takes to overtake. The B&O audio system makes traffic jams less annoying, and friends in the backseat often say it's even more comfortable than the sofa at my home~The fuel consumption occasionally goes slightly above 10L, but the quattro system is super stable on rainy days. Totally worth it!

Every morning stuck in the traffic of rush hour, the Q8's B&O sound system always soothes the irritation—the power of the 3.0T engine hides within its smoothness, giving confidence with just one push of the accelerator when overtaking. Three big men in the back seat don’t feel cramped, and the hatchback trunk can fit all the weekend camping gear. However, during the summer, be quick to turn on the air conditioning if parked outdoors.
