2019 BMW X5 xDrive40i M Sport Review

The Executive-level SUV market has always been a battleground for luxury brands. Consumers value brand prestige while also demanding high requirements for space, configuration, and driving quality — the 2019 BMW X5 xDrive40i M Sport is a popular competitor in this segment. Equipped with the sporty M Sport package, a 3.0T inline-6 turbocharged engine, and a host of intelligent features, this test drive focuses on verifying whether it can balance luxury comfort with driving pleasure, while also assessing its practicality for daily use.
At first glance, the addition of the M Sport package makes it more aggressive compared to the standard model. The front features a large-sized kidney grille with a blacked-out styling and the M-specific front bumper, instantly amplifying the sporty vibe. The side profile is sleek, with a length of 4922mm and a width of 2004mm, giving it a stretched and elegant appearance. The 20-inch wheels (275/45R20 at the front, 305/40R20 at the rear) further enhance the sense of power. The rear end features an M Sport rear diffuser and dual exhaust outlets on both sides, coupled with the three-dimensional design of the LED taillights, which offer high recognition. The lighting system is fully equipped with LEDs, and the automatic headlights and daytime running lights are highly responsive, with sufficient clarity when illuminated at night.
Inside the cabin, the balance between luxury and technological sophistication is well-executed. The dashboard combines soft-touch materials with metal trims, offering a refined tactile experience. The 12.3-inch touchscreen center display seamlessly integrates with the fully digital instrument cluster, providing smooth operation and sharp display quality. A Heads-Up Display (HUD) is standard, allowing drivers to see information such as speed and navigation without looking down. The front seats feature electric adjustment with memory function, offering excellent support and cushioning for long drives. The rear seats can be folded in a 40:20:40 split and even have a remote folding function, providing a trunk capacity of 650 liters, which can be expanded further for storing items such as strollers or suitcases. The configuration is almost fully loaded, including keyless entry/start, 360-degree surround-view cameras, automatic parking, a Harman Kardon sound system with 14 speakers, and separate climate control for the rear seats with an additional LCD screen, ensuring a great experience for rear passengers during family trips.
The space performance fully aligns with the positioning of an Executive-level SUV. With a 2975mm wheelbase, there is still more than two fists of legroom in the rear after the front seats are adjusted to a comfortable position, while headroom offers about one and a half fists of clearance. Even passengers as tall as 180cm won't feel cramped. Storage space is thoughtfully designed: the front central armrest box is deep enough, the door storage compartments can hold large water bottles, and there is a 220V power outlet in the front, convenient for charging electronic devices. The rear armrest includes cup holders, and there are small storage compartments on the sides of the seats, showing great attention to detail.
In terms of performance, the 3.0T inline-6 turbocharged engine delivers a maximum power output of 345PS, with peak torque available from 1500 to 5200rpm. Paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission, even a light tap on the accelerator provides a noticeable push. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time of 5.5 seconds is indeed credible. Switching to sport mode makes the throttle response more sensitive and the gear shifts faster, providing plenty of confidence during overtakes. In Eco mode, the power output becomes smoother, making it suitable for daily commuting. The chassis is equipped with a front double-wishbone independent suspension and the xDrive all-wheel-drive system. It provides excellent support during cornering and controls body roll well. On bumpy roads, the suspension filters out most minor vibrations, leaving only slight road feedback, striking a balance between handling and comfort.
The detailed experience during actual driving is also excellent. Noise control is well-handled, with wind noise and tire noise being minimal at a speed of 120km/h on the highway, and the Harman Kardon sound system ensures sound quality with its soundproofing effect. The braking response is linear, and the braking distance is very short, giving a reassuring feeling. In terms of fuel consumption, the daily commute (half city and half highway) is approximately 10L/100km. Considering the 3.0T engine displacement and the weight of the vehicle, this performance can be considered average. The safety features are particularly comprehensive: 6 airbags, lane change assist, lane departure warning, active braking, etc., all come as standard, making the driving experience very secure.
To summarize, the core advantages of the 2019 BMW X5 xDrive40i M Sport are very evident: the sporty appearance brought by the M Sport package, the powerful 3.0T inline-six engine, the fully equipped technology and safety features, and sufficiently spacious interior. Compared to the same class Mercedes-Benz GLE 450 or Audi Q7 55 TFSI, it stands out with more engaging driving dynamics, more comprehensive features, and with a price tag of RM 618,800, it offers good value for money among Executive SUVs.
This car is very suitable for two groups of people: first, families who value driving quality and brand identity. Its space and configurations can meet the travel needs of the whole family, and its power can occasionally satisfy driving desires. Second, young people who pursue luxury and comfort, as the M Sport's appearance and technology configurations align with their aesthetics. Overall, it is an "all-rounder" Executive SUV that combines BMW's driving DNA with the practicality and luxury sense needed for daily use, making it worth considering.
