2019 BMW X7 xDrive40i Design Pure Excellence Review

In Malaysia's premium mid-size luxury SUV market, the 2019 BMW X7 xDrive40i Design Pure Excellence is an option that cannot be ignored—it targets family users and business professionals who desire seven-seater practicality without compromising on brand luxury. Before this test drive, my main curiosity was: Can this car balance the stability brought by its large size, the comfort of luxurious features, and BMW's iconic handling performance? After all, for consumers at this price point, "well-roundedness" is more important than having just a single standout feature.
Looking at the exterior, the X7’s design straightforwardly communicates its identity as a "flagship SUV." The front features a massive kidney grille complemented by projector LED headlights, offering high recognition; the side profile has elegant and elongated lines, with a length of 5151mm and a wheelbase of 3105mm, making the vehicle look graceful. The 21-inch multi-spoke wheels perfectly match the size of the vehicle, avoiding the top-heavy look. The rear design is relatively simple, with L-shaped LED taillights in BMW’s signature style offering clear visibility when lit. The chrome trim on the lower part of the bumper adds to the refined touch. Overall, the design avoids overcomplicated lines, but every detail emphasizes "grandeur" and "luxury."
Stepping inside, the interior quality matches its flagship positioning. The dashboard is wrapped in soft-touch materials and paired with wood grain panels and metallic trims, offering a refined tactile experience. The 12.3-inch touchscreen center console and fully digital instrument panel are integrated, offering a smooth interface where navigation and music functions can be accessed quickly. In terms of features, a HUD (Head-Up Display) is standard and allows drivers to view speed and navigation info without looking down. The front seats support electric adjustments and memory function, and the leather padding is substantial, ensuring comfort for long periods. The second-row seating is a highlight—a passenger of 1.8 meters tall will still have more than two fists of legroom. The floor is completely flat, making the middle seat comfortable as well. Although the third-row seats aren’t as spacious as the front two rows, they are suitable for adult passengers in emergencies and can be folded down in a 40:20:40 ratio. Once folded, the trunk space expands significantly, making it easy to load large items.
In terms of performance, it features a 3.0T turbocharged engine with a maximum power of 345 PS, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. During daily driving, its power delivery is very smooth—there’s no jerking when starting, and it has enough explosive power when accelerating. The official 0-100 km/h acceleration time is 6.1 seconds, and when driving, deep pressing the throttle for overtaking results in quick gear downshifts, delivering power instantly. The chassis performance is a highlight: although it’s a large SUV, the suspension is tuned with resilience, ensuring bumps are barely noticeable when crossing speed bumps, and the body movement is well-controlled. On mountain roads, the steering accuracy is impressive, and the body roll is significantly smaller than expected. During high-speed cornering, the vehicle remains very stable, avoiding the "floating" feeling of a large ship. As for fuel consumption, during this test drive on mainly city roads with a bit of highway driving, the overall fuel consumption was approximately 10.2L/100km, slightly higher than the official 9.5L figure. However, considering the vehicle’s weight and power, this performance is quite reasonable.
The comfort details are well done. The cabin noise control is excellent, with wind noise and tire noise barely noticeable during high-speed driving. The 16-speaker Harman Kardon audio system delivers clear sound quality, making it almost unaffected by external disturbances while listening to music. The seat support is good, and there is an independent air conditioning control area for the second row, allowing rear passengers to adjust the temperature themselves. It is worth mentioning that its 360-degree panoramic camera is very clear, and combined with front and rear parking sensors, parking this large vehicle doesn't feel difficult.
In summary, the core advantages of the 2019 BMW X7 xDrive40i Design Pure Excellence are evident: the spacious interior with its seven-seat layout can meet family needs; it comes with comprehensive features such as HUD, Harman Kardon sound system, and a fully digital instrument cluster, which are all standard; its power and handling are among the top tier in the large SUV segment, maintaining driving pleasure despite its size. Compared to the Mercedes GLS, it offers more standout handling; compared to the Audi Q7, it excels in interior luxury and space performance.
This vehicle is most suitable for families that require seven-seat space or individuals who occasionally need it for business receptions—it can meet the comfort needs of daily commuting, handle long-distance trips, and also impress with BMW's brand reputation and luxurious features. If your budget is in this range and you're looking for a large SUV with "no obvious shortcomings," then it’s worth considering.
