2019 Mercedes-Benz AMG E-Class AMG E53 Review

In Malaysia's luxury mid-size sedan market, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class has always been a popular choice among business and family users. The AMG E53, as the performance variant of the series, is positioned as "everyday usable performance," bridging the gap between the standard E-Class and the high-end AMG E63. This time, we had the chance to test the vehicle, focusing on its balance between power, luxury, and practicality, to see whether it can meet the needs of both driving pleasure and family outings.
The 2019 AMG E53 continues the elegant silhouette of the E-Class but adds AMG's signature sporty details in certain areas. The front features a large vertical grille with the AMG-exclusive badge, offering high recognition; the lower front lip and side air intakes are decorated with black plastic, enhancing the sporty vibe. The body side has smooth lines, standard 19-inch multi-spoke AMG wheels, paired with 245/40 R19 front tires and 275/35 R19 rear tires, giving it a solid visual effect. The most noticeable element at the rear is the dual round quad exhaust outlets. The taillights have a continuous design, consistent with the standard E-Class, but the diffuser decoration on the lower portion of the rear bumper looks more aggressive. The lighting system comes with standard LED headlights across all models, supports adaptive high and low beams, and offers clear visibility at night, which greatly enhances practicality.
Stepping inside, the interior of the AMG E53 is similar to the standard E-Class but includes more performance-oriented details. The center console is wrapped in large sections of leather, paired with metal trims and optional carbon fiber panels, offering a refined touch. A 12.3-inch all-digital instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch central screen form a dual-screen setup, equipped with the MBUX system. It supports touch, voice, and steering wheel button controls, responds quickly, and includes functions such as navigation, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, and vehicle status monitoring. The seats are AMG-exclusive sports seats with leather upholstery and strong side bolstering. Standard features include electric adjustment and heating functions, and the driver's seat also comes with a memory function. The rear space meets the standards of mid-size luxury sedans. A passenger with a height of 175cm can enjoy two fists of legroom and one fist of headroom. The slightly raised middle floor does not affect short-term rides. The rear seats are equipped with separate air-conditioning vents, Type-C charging ports, and a central armrest, making it sufficiently practical for family use. In terms of storage, the front central armrest box is quite spacious, door pockets can hold two water bottles, and the trunk offers a regular capacity of 540 liters. The rear seats support a fold-down split configuration, enhancing versatility.
In terms of power, the AMG E53 is equipped with a 3.0L inline-six turbocharged engine coupled with a 48V mild hybrid system, delivering a maximum output of 435hp and a peak torque of 520Nm. It is paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission and a 4MATIC+ all-wheel-drive system. During actual driving, it accelerates lightly at startup, with the mild hybrid system assisting the engine in delivering torque at low RPMs, minimizing turbo lag. Switching to Sport mode, the throttle response becomes more sensitive; pressing the accelerator deeply causes the engine RPM to rapidly rise, providing sustained pushback force beyond 5000rpm. The dynamic reserve is abundant during overtaking, with acceleration from 80km/h to 120km/h taking just about 2 seconds. The transmission shifts smoothly in Comfort mode and speeds up in Sport mode, with manual control available via steering paddle shifters, offering a clear logic. In terms of handling, the steering wheel is precise with minimal play, being light at low speeds and stable at high speeds. The suspension system uses an adaptive air suspension, which filters most road bumps in Comfort mode, and feels firm yet not harsh when passing over speed bumps. In Sport mode, the suspension stiffens, enhancing support; during cornering, body roll is well-controlled, and the car's responsiveness is strong. The all-wheel-drive system is rear-biased under normal conditions to enhance driving pleasure. On slippery road surfaces, it automatically distributes power to the front wheels to ensure stability. As for fuel consumption, we tested it under a mix of city and highway conditions, resulting in an average of about 10.5L per 100km, with highway conditions yielding a minimum of 8L per 100km. For a 3.0L engine, this performance is considered fairly average.
The comfort of daily driving is also good, and the noise control of the AMG E53 is excellent. At a high speed of 120km/h, wind and tire noise are not noticeable. The engine noise is almost inaudible during normal driving, and only when you step on the accelerator deeply does it enter the cabin, but the sound is rich and not harsh. The support and wrapping of the seats ensure that long drives won't cause back fatigue, making it suitable for long-distance trips.
Overall, the core advantage of the 2019 AMG E53 lies in its "balance"—it retains AMG's performance genes while maintaining the luxury and practicality of the E-Class. Compared to competitors in the same class like the BMW M550i xDrive (not officially introduced to Malaysia) or Audi S6, the AMG E53 offers a more competitive price (RM740,888) and richer configurations. It is ideal for those who want daily driving comfort while occasionally seeking the joy of driving, such as users aged 30-45, including family-oriented individuals or business professionals. It meets the needs of family travel while bringing driving enjoyment on weekends. If you're looking for a mid-to-large-sized car that balances luxury, performance, and practicality, the AMG E53 is a good choice.
