In Malaysia's C-segment hatchback market, the balance between sporty performance and daily practicality has always been a core concern for users. As a high-performance hatchback representative under the brand, the 2020 BMW 1 Series M135i xDrive breaks the stereotype of "no driving fun in family hatchbacks" with its 306PS power and all-wheel-drive system. In this test drive, we focus on verifying two points: whether its sporty performance truly matches the "M Performance" badge and whether its practicality as a daily commuter car is compromised.

At first glance, the M135i xDrive stands out from the regular 1 Series. The front features a large double kidney grille paired with blackened front bumper side air intakes, exuding a strong sporty vibe. The body lines stretch from the hood to the rear, with a slightly upward waistline in the middle of the doors, complemented by 19-inch blackened multi-spoke wheels, giving the car a low and compact stance. The M-specific diffuser and dual round tailpipes on either side at the rear are the finishing touches. The LED taillights adopt BMW's family-style L-shaped design, offering high recognition when lit at night. The lighting system comes standard with LED across the series, and the addition of automatic headlights and daytime running lights enhances everyday convenience.

Opening the car door, the interior simultaneously exudes a sporty vibe and a luxurious feel. The center console tilts towards the driver for easier operation; the 10.25-inch touchscreen central display and fully digital instrument panel are integrated, with smooth interface performance and clear display quality. The seats are sport-designed, with both front driver and passenger seats supporting electric adjustment and offering excellent bolstering for comfortable long drives. Regarding materials, soft-touch materials cover the upper part of the dashboard and the inner sides of the door panels, while M-logo embroidery details and metal pedals further emphasize the performance identity. As for features, the Harman Kardon 16-speaker audio system delivers outstanding sound quality. Practical features such as dual-zone automatic air conditioning, keyless entry/start, and a 220V power outlet in the front row are all included, fully meeting daily needs.

In terms of space performance, the dimensions are 4319mm × 1799mm × 1434mm, with a wheelbase of 2670mm, which is mid-range for a C-segment hatchback. The front-row seating space is ample, with an 180cm passenger still having a fist's worth of headroom after adjusting the seat. The rear legroom is slightly tight, but seating three adults in the back doesn't feel too crowded. The addition of rear air conditioning vents and power outlets enhances the comfort of rear passengers. The trunk offers a regular capacity of 380L, and the rear seats support a 40:20:40 split-fold configuration, which can be expanded for more storage space, easily accommodating a baby stroller or camping gear.

Start the engine, and the sound of the 2.0T turbocharged four-cylinder engine is not overly aggressive, but once you press the accelerator, the 306PS maximum horsepower and 450N·m peak torque (1750-4500rpm) immediately demonstrate their power. Officially, it accelerates from 0-100km/h in 4.8 seconds. In real experience, the all-wheel-drive system exhibits strong grip during take-off with virtually no wheel spin. During mid-range acceleration and overtaking, the gearbox downshifts quickly, and the power response is prompt, maintaining a significant push-back feeling up to 120km/h. There are three driving modes to choose from: Sport, Comfort, and Eco. When switched to Sport mode, the throttle sensitivity and steering feel become heavier, better suiting the performance car's positioning.

In terms of handling, the performance of the M135i xDrive is surprising. The steering is precise with minimal play, and the dynamics of the wheels can be clearly felt when cornering. The suspension system uses a front MacPherson strut and rear multi-link independent suspension, which is tuned to be on the firmer side, but it manages to filter out most minor vibrations when dealing with bumpy roads, without giving excessively harsh feedback. The all-wheel drive system distributes power effectively in corners, keeping the car's body stable and minimizing body roll even during rapid cornering. The braking system performs excellently, delivering linear and ample braking force. During emergency braking, the car does not show deviation from its path.

In terms of fuel consumption, we tested it over a week in mixed road conditions, and the average fuel consumption was 8.2L/100km, slightly higher than the official figure of 7.5L. However, considering the frequent use of Sport mode, this result is already quite ideal. Noise control is well-executed — wind and tire noise are not noticeable during high-speed driving, and engine noise is only audible at high RPMs, which does not affect the comfort of everyday driving.

To summarize, the core advantages of the 2020 BMW 1 Series M135i xDrive are clear: powerful performance, precise handling, and a balanced combination of daily practicality and luxury features. Compared to peers like the Golf GTI or the A3 45 TFSI, its all-wheel drive system and M Performance tuning are the standout highlights. The configurations are also richer, such as the Harman Kardon sound system and electric seats, making the value-for-money aspect stand out.

This car is suitable for two groups of people: first, young enthusiasts who seek driving pleasure, as it can be great for weekend mountain road trips and is not tiring for daily commutes. Second, families who value quality, as it offers adequate space and comprehensive safety features (6 airbags, active braking, lane departure warning, etc.), meeting the needs of everyday family travel.

Overall, the 2020 BMW 1 Series M135i xDrive is a "versatile" high-performance hatchback. It retains BMW's driving essence while balancing practicality, making it a worthy contender in Malaysia's C-segment market.

Last week, while taking my family to Cameron Highlands, sudden heavy rain halfway made the mountain road as slippery as oiled glass. I intended to drive steadily, but the car in front suddenly braked hard — the M135i’s active braking system engaged with a "beep," coming to a steady stop just half a meter away from the vehicle ahead. Later, when the rain lightened up, I switched to Sport mode to overtake a truck. Although I didn’t fully utilize the 4.8-second 0-100 speed, the torque from the 2.0T turbocharger, which kicks in at 1750 rpm, made overtaking clear and effortless, and the xDrive’s grip prevented any tire slipping. However, the back row felt a bit cramped with three adults, so I deducted one point each for performance and safety, giving it a fair 4 out of 5.

Previously I drove a Golf GTI, but after switching to the M135i, I finally understood what is called the "pinnacle of hot hatches"! The interior carries BMW's consistent refinement, featuring a 10.25-inch touchscreen and Harman Kardon speakers, making listening to music during traffic jams incredibly soothing. The safety features are fully equipped, but it lacks a 360-degree panoramic view, so reversing in narrow parking lots in Malaysia requires extra care. The performance is impeccable, reaching 0-100 km/h in 4.8 seconds. Switching to Sport mode during morning rush hour feels like cutting through butter when overtaking cars. On weekends, cruising the North-South Expressway is super stable with xDrive, even on rainy highways it doesn't skid. A minor drawback is the fuel tank is only 50L, so you'll need to refuel more often on long road trips. Overall, spending 370,000 MYR on a car that balances family use and performance is totally worth it!

Last Saturday, I took my wife and kids to the orchard at the foot of Yunding Mountain. Just as we started driving on the winding mountain road, we encountered heavy rain. The 235/35 R19 tires gripped the slippery asphalt road firmly, and xDrive distributed the 306 horsepower power smoothly—if I were driving a front-wheel-drive car, it would have already slipped here. While cornering, the chassis felt tight, and the steering wheel responded precisely. However, the kids in the back said it was a bit bumpy. Driving downhill, the Harman Kardon played songs, mixing with the sound of rain and the low roar of the exhaust, which was quite atmospheric. As for the appearance, it's not too flashy parked in the community, but the blacked-out wheels and dual exhaust pipes catch the eyes of those who know. 4.8 seconds to go from 0 to 100 km/h? I tried it once, and the thrust was impressive, but I don't use it in daily driving. The fuel consumption in the city during traffic jams can reach 9L/100km, which is slightly higher than the official 7.5.

Previously, I was driving a Japanese family car, and I switched to the M135i purely for its 2.0T engine and all-wheel drive! During the morning rush hour on Jalan Ampang in Kuala Lumpur, the xDrive is incredibly stable, and lane-changing and overtaking are much more agile compared to my old car. On weekends, driving on the winding roads to Genting Highlands, the 4.8-second acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h gives a thrilling push-back experience that made my friend in the passenger seat scream. Shifting gears with the steering wheel paddles is also very satisfying. The interior Harman Kardon sound system feels especially enjoyable when listening to Malaysian songs on the highway, though the rear seat space is a bit tight for friends who are 180cm tall. However, with a price of 370,000 MYR, it offers more features compared to the A35L, and the 5-year unlimited mileage warranty in Malaysia is super reassuring. Totally worth it!
