2020 BMW M3 M340i xDrive Review

In Malaysia's luxury mid-size sedan market, models that can balance daily commuting comfort with occasional driving passion have always been rare but in high demand. The 2020 BMW M340i xDrive, as the performance model of the 3 Series family, takes its central selling points from the 3.0T inline-six engine and xDrive all-wheel-drive system, aiming to strike a precise balance between luxury and sport performance. Through this test drive, we will focus on verifying whether its dynamic performance truly lives up to the "M Performance" label, while also evaluating its practicality as a daily commuter car.
Approaching the vehicle, the first impression is a blend of understated elegance with a hint of aggression. With a length of 4709mm, it retains the standard dimensions of a mid-size sedan. The body lines appear more taut compared to the regular 3 Series — the hood's prominent contour lines stretch towards the kidney-shaped grille, and the grille's edges adorned with subtle chrome trim enhance its premium feel. The air intakes on both sides of the lower front bumper, a hallmark of the M series, amplify the sporty vibe. On the sides, 19-inch dual five-spoke wheels paired with 225/40 front and 255/35 rear tires create a full visual impact, while a character line extending from the front fender to the rear lights makes the side profile appear more elongated. At the rear, the dual round exhaust outlets on either side are a direct testament to its performance identity, while the LED tail lights with BMW's signature L-shaped design provide high recognition when illuminated at night. Overall, the exterior maintains the composure of a luxury sedan while conveying the tension of a performance car through its design details.
Stepping inside, the interior offers a seamless blend of luxury and technology. The center console is oriented towards the driver for easier operation. In terms of materials, most of the surfaces that come in contact are covered with soft leather and metallic trim, ensuring a refined touch. The 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster and the 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment display are the visual highlights. The instrument cluster can switch between classic, sport, and other display modes, while the infotainment screen runs on the iDrive system, supporting both touch and rotary dial controls with seamless responsiveness. In terms of features, the car comes standard with a HUD (head-up display), a Harman Kardon 12-speaker audio system, electrically adjustable front seats (with memory function for the driver), and independent rear air conditioning, offering maximum practicality. The interior space lives up to mid-size car standards — the 2851mm wheelbase provides ample rear legroom. A passenger measuring 175cm tall has about a two-fist gap between their knees and the front seat while seated in the rear. The trunk capacity is 480 liters, capable of accommodating multiple suitcases for daily use, and the rear seats can be folded down in a 40:20:40 split to expand cargo space.
Dynamic performance is the core strength of the M340i xDrive. It is equipped with a 3.0T inline-six turbocharged engine delivering maximum power of 382 PS and peak torque of 500 N·m, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and xDrive all-wheel-drive system, achieving an official 0-100 km/h acceleration in just 4.4 seconds. During actual driving, the power response is immediate from a standstill, with virtually no turbo lag. When pressing the accelerator hard, the power output feels smooth yet continuous, with plenty of confidence for mid-range acceleration and overtaking, delivering a palpable sense of pushback. In sport mode, the transmission is proactive with quick downshifts, and when used with the paddle shifters on the steering wheel, it offers an engaging driving experience. In normal mode, it leans towards smoothness, suitable for daily commutes. As for handling, the steering is precise with minimal play and offers a moderate feedback weight. The chassis employs a front double-wishbone and rear multi-link independent suspension setup, which is tuned for sportiness while retaining a certain level of comfort. Body roll is well-controlled during cornering, and the car exhibits strong stability when driving at high speeds. When dealing with uneven road surfaces, the suspension absorbs most of the minor vibrations, avoiding a harsh response and balancing the needs of performance and everyday driving.
In terms of fuel consumption, we tested under mixed road conditions (approximately 50% urban and 50% highway), and the combined fuel consumption was about 8.5L per 100 kilometers. Considering the 3.0T displacement and performance, this result is within an acceptable range. Noise control performs well, with wind and tire noise being well suppressed during high-speed driving. Engine noise is not obvious in normal mode, while in sport mode, it delivers a rich roar that enhances the driving atmosphere.
Overall, the core advantage of the 2020 BMW M340i xDrive lies in its "balance"—the 3.0T engine provides a strong performance experience, the xDrive all-wheel-drive system enhances stability, while the luxurious configuration and practical space also meet daily family use needs. Compared to its rival, the Mercedes-Benz C43 AMG, the M340i xDrive offers richer configurations at a similar power output and comes at a more cost-effective price (RM 379,800).
This car is suitable for two types of consumers: those who pursue driving pleasure while needing to accommodate family use, and young users who love luxury brands and have certain performance requirements. Overall, the 2020 BMW M340i xDrive is a "versatile" luxury performance sedan that can meet the comfort and practicality of daily commuting while unleashing sporty passion when needed. It is an excellent choice in the luxury mid-size car market that balances performance and practicality.
