The luxury mid-size SUV market in Malaysia has always been dominated by German brands. The 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC 200, as one of the core models in this segment, attracts quality-conscious consumers with its balanced product capabilities and Mercedes' signature sense of luxury. In this test drive, we focused on experiencing its daily driving performance, space practicality, and whether its features match its price positioning to see if it still holds enough competitiveness among its peers in the same class.

In terms of appearance, the 2020 GLC 200 continues Mercedes-Benz's family design language, presenting a style that is dignified and imposing while not lacking a sense of refinement. The front face features a large tri-star emblem paired with a single chrome strip, and the sharp design of the LED headlights integrates naturally with the grille edges, enhancing the front's overall recognizability. The body side profile displays flowing lines, with a waistline running from the front to the rear adding to its muscular look. The 20-inch wheels with 255/45 R20 tires ensure both visual appeal and adequate grip. At the rear, the LED taillights adopt a wrap-around design with high recognizability when lit. The chrome decorative strip on the lower rear bumper along with the dual exhaust system adds a sporty vibe.

Stepping inside, the luxurious interior is one of the highlights of the GLC 200. The dashboard is wrapped in soft-touch materials, complemented by metal trims and wood grain panels, offering a refined and premium feel. The dual-screen system, comprised of a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment display and a fully digital instrument cluster, ensures smooth operation and clear visuals, while supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. The multifunction steering wheel comes with shift paddles and is wrapped in leather, providing a comfortable grip. The left buttons control multimedia and phone functions, while the right ones adjust the driving assistance systems. The front seats support electric adjustment and are well-cushioned with excellent support, ensuring comfort even during long drives. The rear seats can be folded down in a 40:20:40 configuration, increasing the trunk capacity from 550 liters to a significantly larger space, meeting daily storage and long-distance travel needs.

In terms of space, the GLC 200's dimensions are 4658mm × 2096mm × 1644mm, with a wheelbase of 2873mm. Front-row passengers can easily find a comfortable seating position with ample headroom and legroom. The rear seating space performs equally well; a passenger with a height of 175cm sitting in the back will still have about two fists of legroom, and one fist of headroom, making it comfortable even for three passengers. The rear also features independent air conditioning vents and a 220V/230V power outlet, enhancing the comfort and convenience for rear passengers. The trunk capacity in its standard state is 550 liters, which can easily fit two 28-inch suitcases and some personal belongings, fulfilling the needs of daily family usage.

In terms of power, the GLC 200 is equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged engine that delivers a maximum power of 200PS and a peak torque of 320N·m, paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission and a rear-wheel-drive system. During daily driving, the engine can produce peak torque at just 1300rpm, providing light starts and quick throttle response. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 7.8 seconds. In actual experience, stepping on the gas pedal deeply gives a noticeable pushback sensation, and there is sufficient power reserve for overtaking. The gearbox shifts smoothly with almost no noticeable jolts. In Economy mode, the shifting logic leans towards fuel efficiency, maintaining the engine at lower RPMs; whereas in Sport mode, the transmission delays shifting to keep the engine at higher RPMs, delivering stronger power output.

In terms of handling, the GLC 200's steering is precise with minimal play. It feels light and convenient for parking at low speeds while being steady at high speeds, enhancing the sense of safety. The suspension system features independent multi-link suspension at both the front and rear, tuned for comfort. It effectively filters out most road bumps and maintains vehicle stability during cornering, keeping body roll within a reasonable range. When passing over speed bumps or uneven roads, the suspension handles vibrations cleanly and efficiently without excessive bounce. The braking system performs excellently, with the brake pedal offering a linear feel and uniform braking force output. During emergency braking, the vehicle remains stable.

In terms of fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 6.6L/100km. During the actual test drive, fuel consumption was approximately 8.5L/100km in urban traffic conditions and about 6.0L/100km on the highway. The overall fuel consumption was around 7.2L/100km, which meets expectations. Regarding noise control, the vehicle suppresses wind noise and tire noise well during high-speed driving, providing excellent cabin quietness and a comfortable driving environment for passengers.

In terms of safety features, the GLC 200 comes standard with seven airbags, lane-keeping assist, active braking, and forward collision warning as active safety features, as well as front and rear parking sensors, a rear-view camera, and automatic parking as passive safety features, ensuring comprehensive protection for the occupants.

In summary, the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC 200 offers a balanced performance in luxury, practicality, power delivery, and safety features. Compared to competitors in the same class, it stands out with its luxurious interior feel and brand premium appeal, while also offering a mid-to-upper level of configuration. It is suitable for families emphasizing quality and comfort, as well as for young consumers seeking a luxury brand experience. If you are looking for a luxury mid-size SUV that balances everyday use and business needs, the GLC 200 is undoubtedly a worthwhile option to consider.

Driven the GLC200 for two years, enduring traffic jams every day thanks to its large screen and comfortable seats. The rear seats can fit three friends without feeling cramped. On the highway, stepping on the gas provides a strong boost. However, the interior feels more plasticky than expected. But at this price point, what more can you ask for?

Previously drove a Japanese SUV, switched to the GLC 200 purely for the refined Mercedes-Benz feel — the interior is truly impeccable, the leather and wood texture feel premium, and the 10.25-inch screen runs smoothly, giving it 5 stars is not an exaggeration. During the morning rush hour jam on Jalan Ampang in Kuala Lumpur, the 2.0T engine provides sufficient low-end torque, making it easy to follow traffic, but the fuel consumption is higher than the official 6.6L/100km, reaching over 8L in city driving. Took the family to Genting Highlands over the weekend, the rear-wheel drive handles slopes stably, but the rear air conditioning feels slightly weak. Safety features are comprehensive, with 7 airbags and active braking. Last time, I almost rear-ended the car in front, but the system stopped the car automatically, which is quite reassuring. A minor gripe is the 20-inch tires with thin sidewalls; you have to go over speed bumps slowly, or it feels bumpy. Overall, I'm still satisfied — it's more prestigious than competitors and sufficient for family use.

Last week, I took my family to the orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain. Just after passing the toll station, we encountered a heavy rainstorm. The rain-sensing wipers automatically sped up to sweep the water away, and the LED headlights pierced through the rain. Suddenly, the forward collision warning turned red—it turned out the car in front had braked sharply. The active braking system intervened just in time, giving me a scare, but it was stable. The kids in the back seat were lying down watching the scenery, with the 2873mm wheelbase providing ample space. Folding down the rear seats in a 40:20:40 split, we managed to fit in three boxes of fruit. However, the rear-wheel drive felt a bit slippery on the wet road during high-speed turns. The safety features came to the rescue, but it still felt slightly unsettling. The exterior didn't look as dazzling in the rain either, so deducting a point seems fair.
