With more and more consumers in the luxury mid-size SUV market leaning towards choices that combine "practicality and individuality," the niche market for coupe SUVs continues to heat up. As one of the representative models in this segment, the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 4MATIC Coupé has become the focus of attention for many buyers who seek style and performance, thanks to the luxurious heritage of the Mercedes brand, the design sensibility of the sloping coupe silhouette, and the practicality of an all-wheel-drive system. This time, we got our hands on the actual vehicle, and our main aim is to evaluate whether its dynamic performance in daily driving matches its luxurious positioning, while also examining whether the coupe design affects spatial practicality, providing potential buyers with a reference.

From the exterior, the overall style of this car retains the ruggedness of an SUV while incorporating the smooth lines of a coupe. The front face features Mercedes' iconic large tristar emblem grille paired with sturdy chrome trim, making it highly recognizable; the sharp design of the LED headlights on both sides, with clear internal structures, offers striking visual effects when illuminated. The coupe SUV's most distinctive design highlight lies in its side profile, where the sloping lines gracefully descend from the B-pillar and seamlessly connect with the rear spoiler, extending the visual proportions of the body; its width of 1890mm and 20-inch multi-spoke wheels add to the sense of stability on the sides. At the rear, the dual exhaust pipes with chrome finish enhance the sporty flair, and the LED taillights feature a penetrating design (although not fully connected), echoing the front headlights while offering high nighttime recognition.

Stepping inside, the luxury and refinement of the interior live up to Mercedes' usual standards. The dashboard is wrapped in soft-touch materials, complemented by wood grain panels and metallic chrome trims, delivering a meticulously tactile texture. The center console layout is clear, with a 10.25-inch touchscreen serving as the visual centerpiece, offering smooth system responsiveness and supporting functionalities like navigation and Bluetooth connectivity; the full LCD instrument cluster displays rich content and can switch between different theme modes, providing intuitive access to driving information. In terms of features, the front seats offer electric adjustment and 4-way lumbar support, with leather seats providing good wrapping and support; the rear row includes independent air-conditioning vents and power outlets, and the 40:20:40 split-folding design allows for flexible expansion of trunk space. Notably, keyless entry, 360-degree panoramic imaging, and automatic parking are all standard, greatly enhancing convenience for everyday use.

In terms of space, the body dimensions are 4732mm×1890mm×1602mm, with a wheelbase of 2873mm, which is at the mainstream level among its class. The front row offers ample seating space, with a 175cm tall occupant having a headroom surplus of about a fist and two fingers after adjusting the seat; rear legroom is also spacious, with approximately two fist-widths of clearance ensuring no cramped feeling, though the sloping coupe design slightly compromises headroom compared to conventional SUVs, leaving about a three-finger distance between the occupant's head and the roof. The trunk offers a standard capacity of 500L, which can be further expanded by folding down the rear seats, accommodating daily large items such as strollers or suitcases without issues, making the storage capacity sufficient for family use.

In terms of power, this vehicle is equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum power of 262PS and a peak torque that kicks in as early as 1300rpm. It is paired with a 9-speed automatic transmission and a 4MATIC all-wheel-drive system. During actual driving, the power response is positive at the start, providing a noticeable acceleration feeling with a light touch on the accelerator. Mid-to-late acceleration remains strong, and when overtaking, pressing the gas pedal harder allows for quick downshifts and a smooth, consistent power output. When switched to Sports Mode, the throttle sensitivity is further enhanced, and the engine speed is maintained at a higher range, adding more driving pleasure. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 6.3 seconds, which is an excellent performance among coupe SUVs in the same class.

The handling and chassis performance are also commendable. The steering wheel provides precise control with minimal play; it feels light during low-speed driving and becomes more stable at higher speeds, offering the driver ample confidence. The chassis adopts independent multi-link suspension for both the front and rear, tuned for comfort without losing support. When driving over speed bumps or bumpy roads, the suspension effectively filters most vibrations, keeping the car body stable. During cornering, the suspension adequately suppresses body roll, and with the support of the all-wheel-drive system, the vehicle exhibits good tracking performance without noticeable understeering. Regarding fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 7.1L/100km. In actual tests, urban fuel consumption is about 9L/100km, while highway consumption is about 6.5L/100km. For a 2.0T all-wheel-drive SUV, this fuel consumption is within a reasonable range.

In terms of driving comfort, the noise control is well-handled. When driving at high speeds, wind and tire noise are not noticeable, and cabin conversations are hardly affected. The cushioning of the seats is moderately soft, ensuring long-term comfort without causing fatigue. In addition, the engine start-stop technology operates smoothly, with no significant jerks, and the automatic parking brake and hill-start assist functions enhance the convenience of daily parking and hill starts.

In conclusion, the core strengths of the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 4MATIC Coupé are as follows: First, the luxurious experience of the Mercedes-Benz brand and the unique design of the coupe shape, meeting consumers' pursuit of a stylish appearance. Second, the well-equipped standard features and spacious interior make it practical for daily use. Third, its powerful performance, stable handling, and all-wheel-drive system increase its adaptability to complex road conditions. Compared to competitors in the same class such as the BMW X4 and Audi Q5L Sportback, it has certain advantages in configuration richness and brand value, although its price is relatively high (RM 403,536).

The target consumers for this car are quite clear: First, young consumers who pursue unique design and luxurious texture and value the vehicle's appearance and brand style. Second, families who prioritize practicality and driving comfort, as the coupe design does not compromise space excessively, making it suitable for daily family use. Third, users who occasionally need to deal with complex road conditions, as the all-wheel-drive system provides a more stable driving experience.

Overall, the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 4MATIC Coupé is a “balanced and stylish” luxury coupe SUV. It meets consumers' needs for a unique exterior appearance while taking into account practicality and driving performance, making it a worthy choice in its class.

Last week, I took my family to the orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain. The heavy rain washed the mountain roads, making them muddy. The torque from the 2.0T turbocharged engine burst out at just 1300 RPM, making uphill climbs effortless. The 4MATIC system gripped the slippery road firmly without a hint of slipping. On the way back, the sky darkened quickly, and a motorcycle suddenly darted out. The active brake system gave a "beep-beep" warning before intervening directly, bringing us to a steady stop—7 airbags and this safety system are truly reassuring when driving on rainy mountain roads. However, in the city when stuck in traffic, the start-stop system is a bit sensitive, and the fuel consumption is slightly higher than the official 7.1. Docking one point for that is fair.

During daily traffic jams, the 2.0T turbo of the GLC 300 Coupe kicks in quickly, making overtaking effortless! The hatchback design turns heads, but the sloping rear compromises headroom in the back. The 360-degree camera is a lifesaver when parking in narrow alleys, but the fuel consumption is much higher than the official 7.1L—it goes above 10L in urban driving, which is a bit hard on the wallet.

Last week, I drove my parents to Cameron Highlands. While driving uphill, the rain-sensing wipers automatically adjusted to the mountain mist and drizzle. The 2.0T turbo unleashed torque as early as 1300 RPM, making uphill overtaking effortless. The 4MATIC system felt very stable. During corners, the vehicle stability control intervened promptly, with no noticeable body tilt. The interior had genuine leather seats with lumbar support, so my parents didn't complain about fatigue even while sitting in the back. The surround-view camera helped me easily park the car in the narrow tea plantation parking lot. However, the fuel consumption was slightly higher than the official 7.1, reaching almost 9 in congested city traffic, deducting a point for realism.
