2021 BMW iX xDrive40 Review

As Malaysia's electric vehicle market enters a phase of segmented competition, the choices for luxury executive-class pure electric SUVs are no longer limited to just a few brands. Positioned as one of the core products in BMW's electrification transition, the 2021 BMW iX xDrive40 directly targets mid-to-high-end users seeking a blend of luxury and electric practicality — it not only continues BMW's driving DNA but also features intelligent configurations rarely found in its class. This is precisely the core aspect we aim to thoroughly verify during this test drive: can a luxury electric vehicle strike a balance among "technology," "driving," and "practicality"?
On the first encounter with the iX xDrive40, the most intuitive impression is that it steps outside the traditional rugged framework of SUVs. The front adopts a closed double kidney grille paired with slender LED headlights, with an overall design that is smooth yet retains a sense of tension; the side of the car avoids complex character lines, and the coupe-like silhouette that extends from the A-pillar to the rear softens the bulkiness of an SUV, with 21-inch rims perfectly balancing the body proportions. The rear design is simple, featuring through-type LED taillights that echo the front design, and when lit, the recognition is high. Notably, its body dimensions measure 4953mm × 1967mm × 1695mm, with a wheelbase of 3000mm. In the executive-class SUV segment, these dimensions are standard, yet visually, it appears lighter compared to traditional internal combustion engine counterparts of the same class.
Sitting inside, the sense of luxury comes primarily from the materials and details. The dashboard uses large areas of soft-touch surfaces combined with wooden trim panels, with no excessive physical buttons — most functions are integrated into the 14.9-inch touchscreen central control panel. The screen is seamlessly connected to the 12.3-inch fully digital dashboard, featuring a clear operating logic and a highly responsive interface. The front seats are electrically adjustable with memory functions, providing padding with balanced softness and support. Similarly, the rear seats are electrically adjustable as well, and the long wheelbase provides ample legroom. A passenger of 180cm in height sitting in the rear will find a knee distance of two fists from the front seats. Regarding storage, the central armrest box offers sufficient depth, and the trunk has a capacity of 500L, which can be expanded by folding down the rear seats, making it easy to store strollers or luggage for daily use. Additionally, features like dual-zone automatic air conditioning, independent rear air conditioning, and a 220V power outlet come as standard configurations, catering well to the needs of family users in terms of detail.
The power performance is one of the highlights of the iX xDrive40. It is equipped with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system, delivering a combined maximum power output of 326PS and a peak torque of 630N·m, with an official 0-100km/h acceleration time of 6.1 seconds. During daily driving, the acceleration response is very direct, with a light press of the accelerator yielding a noticeable push-back sensation. When switched to sport mode, the power output becomes more aggressive; pressing the accelerator hard during overtaking results in immediate torque response without delay, and its high-speed acceleration surpasses many electric vehicles in the same class. However, its handling is not deliberately sporty. The steering wheel has a moderate turning weight with minimal play, providing precise direction during lane changes or cornering. The suspension system comprises a front double-wishbone independent setup, offering excellent shock absorption. When passing over speed bumps or uneven roads, the suspension quickly absorbs vibrations without redundant bouncing, while maintaining a certain level of road feedback, aligning with the positioning of a luxury SUV.
In this test drive, we focused on range testing: the official pure electric range is 425km. In actual urban conditions, with air conditioning on and music playing throughout, the energy consumption is about 19kWh per 100km, and the range achievement rate can reach over 85%. On highways, when maintaining a speed of 110km/h, the energy consumption rises to about 22kWh per 100km, and the range can reach around 350km. This performance is entirely sufficient for daily commutes or weekend short trips. Additionally, its energy regeneration has three adjustable levels. At the lowest level, it almost resembles the coasting sensation of a gasoline car, without a significant dragging effect. The highest level provides strong regeneration, suitable for one-pedal driving in congested areas. Noise control is also done quite well. At low speeds, there is virtually no motor noise, and on highways, wind noise and tire noise are suppressed to reasonable levels, allowing in-car conversations without the need to raise voices deliberately.
As for braking performance, it is equipped with ventilated disc brakes both front and rear, delivering a linear pedal feel. During emergency braking, the vehicle remains stable without exhibiting a noticeable forward pitching motion. However, it is worth noting that its weight reaches 2440kg, so the steering effort at low speeds requires some adjustment. Nevertheless, the standard automatic parking feature alleviates this issue—the parking camera provides clear imagery, and the accuracy of parking is quite high.
Overall, the 2021 BMW iX xDrive40 has clear core advantages: First, its sense of luxury and technological features surpass its class. For example, its 14.9-inch large screen, electric seats throughout the vehicle, and intelligent driving aids (lane change assist, lane departure warning, and active braking are all standard) are not commonly seen in electric vehicles at this price range. Second, the driving quality retains BMW's essence, offering smooth and powerful power delivery, with a chassis tuned for both comfort and handling. Third, practicality is uncompromised—the space from the long wheelbase and the reasonable range achievement rate all meet the needs of family daily use. Compared with competitors like the Mercedes-Benz EQC or Audi e-tron, its smart features and driving experience stand out more while being relatively affordable (RM 403,800), showcasing a clear value-for-money advantage.
The target user profile for the iX xDrive40 is also clear: Firstly, mid-to-high-end families that pursue a sense of luxury and need a vehicle that balances business occasions and family trips. Secondly, electric car users who enjoy driving, as its power and handling bring more driving pleasure than many electric cars that only "pile on features." Lastly, tech-savvy users who are sensitive to technological configurations, as the 14.9-inch large screen and intelligent assist systems meet their expectations.
In summary, the 2021 BMW iX xDrive40 does not treat "electrification" as its sole selling point but finds a balance among luxury, driving experience, and practicality. It is not just an electric car that grabs attention with technology but a luxury SUV that can truly integrate into daily life. If you are looking for a vehicle that combines brand prestige with the ability to meet the needs of your entire family, it deserves to be on your shortlist.
