Specs

As an Executive-level all-electric model, the launch of the 2021 BMW iX xDrive40 Sport directly targets the Malaysian market's user group with dual demands for luxury, technology, and electric mobility experiences. While retaining the BMW brand's sense of quality, this car focuses on pure electric driving as its core selling point. Combined with spacious interior and rich configurations, it boasts high recognizability among similar models. This review will explore its static design, dynamic performance, and practical usage scenarios to help readers determine whether this car suits their needs.

From the exterior, the iX xDrive40 Sport's overall style leans towards simplicity and futurism. The front features a closed double kidney grille design, paired with slender LED headlights on either side, giving it high recognizability. The body lines extend smoothly from the front to the rear, with a slightly muscular feel, while the 22-inch large wheels further enhance its sporty appeal. The rear design is relatively simple, with through-type taillights echoing the front look. The aerodynamic kit details beneath the rear bumper demonstrate considerations for optimizing wind resistance specific to electric vehicles. Regarding the lighting system, the LED headlights support automatic activation and adjustment functions, and the daytime running lights coordinate well with the overall body style, offering clear yet non-dazzling visual effects when illuminated at night.

Inside the car, luxury and technology seamlessly blend. The dashboard is wrapped in soft-touch materials, accented with metallic trims. Most touchpoints are made of leather or soft materials, creating a texture that matches the Executive-level positioning. The center console is centered around a 14.9-inch touchscreen, integrated with a fully digital instrument panel. The interface is smooth to operate, and the menu is logically structured. In terms of configuration, the front seats feature electric adjustment, with memory function for the driver's seat. The rear seats support a 60:40 split-folding design, offering strong practicality. Dual-zone automatic air conditioning and independent rear air conditioning cater to the comfort of both front and rear passengers, while the 18-speaker sound system significantly enhances in-car entertainment.

In terms of space performance, the car measures 4953mm in length, 1967mm in width, and 1695mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3000mm, ensuring ample space for both front and rear passengers. The front-row passenger has sufficient head and leg room. For a 180cm-tall occupant sitting in the rear, there remains about two fists of legroom, and the headroom is not cramped either. The trunk capacity is 500L, adequate for placing suitcases or large items for daily use. Folding down the rear seats further expands the storage space. The storage compartments inside the cabin are also practical; the central armrest box and door panel storage slots provide ample capacity for everyday use. Additionally, the front row is equipped with a 220V/230V power outlet for connecting external devices conveniently.

In terms of dynamic driving, the iX xDrive40 Sport is equipped with a dual-motor system, delivering a combined maximum horsepower of 326PS and a total torque of 630N·m. Its official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 6.1 seconds. During actual driving, the power response is rapid at the start, and when the accelerator pedal is deep-pressed, the thrust is quite noticeable. Mid-to-high-range acceleration maintains abundant power output, making overtaking or highway cruising effortless. The driving modes offer multiple choices. Switching to the Sport mode makes the power output more aggressive, while the Comfort mode provides a smoother driving experience.

The handling and chassis performance are consistent with BMW's tuning style, with a precise steering wheel, minimal dead zone, light at low speeds, and gradually heavier at high speeds, providing the driver with sufficient confidence. The combination of front double-wishbone independent suspension and rear multi-link suspension performs well in filtering road bumps. When passing through speed bumps or uneven roads, the body sway is minimal, maintaining good comfort. Meanwhile, the suspension also provides adequate support when cornering, controlling body roll well, with overall excellent stability.

As a pure electric model, range and energy consumption are key concerns. The official pure electric range is 425km, and in actual tests, with 50% urban roads and 50% highways, the range fulfillment rate is about 85%. Energy consumption is slightly higher during highway cruising, but more economical for urban commuting. The energy recovery system offers various intensity levels; at the highest level, the drag feeling when releasing the accelerator is quite noticeable, which, once accustomed to, can reduce braking frequency. At the lowest level, it resembles the driving experience of a fuel car, with a lower adaptation threshold.

In terms of driving comfort, the noise control of the iX xDrive40 Sport is commendable, with wind and tire noise well suppressed at high speeds, delivering good cabin quietness. The seats provide moderate wrapping and support, making long rides less fatiguing. Features like the 360-degree panoramic view and automatic parking make daily parking more convenient.

Overall, the core advantages of the 2021 BMW iX xDrive40 Sport lie in its luxurious interior quality, abundant technological features, spacious design, and smooth yet powerful electric driving experience. Compared to other pure electric models in the same class, it holds certain advantages in brand influence, chassis tuning, and configuration richness. This car is better suited for users seeking a luxurious travel experience, focusing on technological features and spatial practicality. Whether for daily commutes or family long-distance trips, it can meet those needs well. If you're considering a premium executive-level model that balances brand appeal, luxury, and electric performance, the iX xDrive40 Sport is worthy of consideration.

As a 2021 iX owner, I’ve been driving it in Malaysia for almost two years, and honestly, I feel it’s worth every penny! I used to drive a fuel-powered SUV, but after switching to a pure electric vehicle, I totally fell in love with its quietness and smoothness—when stuck in traffic on Jalan Ampang in Kuala Lumpur during morning rush hour, the 630N·m torque of the motor responds instantly, making lane-switching and overtaking so much more enjoyable than a fuel car. And even with the air conditioner on full blast, I don’t feel guilty about the electricity consumption. On weekends, taking the family to Genting Highlands, the xDrive all-wheel drive is incredibly stable when going uphill. Its cornering support is better than the Model X I test drove, and even the elderly in the back seat don’t get car sick. However, there are some minor drawbacks: the 425km range requires a recharge during long trips from Malacca to Penang. Although there are charging stations at highway service areas, occasional waiting is needed. The 22-inch wheels look great, but I have to slow down over speed bumps; otherwise, the ride feels bumpy. The crystal gear lever and 18 Harman Kardon speakers in the interior really hit the spot, and my whole family praises how premium it feels. The safety features are top-notch—last time in Subang Jaya, I almost got cut off, but the automatic emergency braking kicked in, giving me a fright but also making me grateful I chose the right car!

Previously drove a fuel-powered SUV, but after switching to the iX, I completely fell in love with the silky smoothness of electric cars! Safety is top-notch — during Kuala Lumpur’s morning rush hour, the automatic braking once saved me from a moment of distraction. The interior feels like a luxurious living room, and with 18 speakers, listening to Malay songs on the highway is simply amazing. However, the range drops by 20% in hot weather, so when driving to Penang, a mid-trip recharge is necessary. Took the kids to Genting Highlands over the weekend; xDrive is super stable, but with the 22-inch tires, you need to go slower over potholes. Overall, worth every bit of the RM440K+ price, and it feels classier than its competitors!

Last Saturday, I took my family to the orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain to pick durians. The mountain roads were slippery after the rain, but the iX's four-wheel-drive system was very stable. The body didn't sway much when cornering, and my wife, sitting in the back holding the child, didn't complain about feeling car sick. The noise from the 22-inch tires was a bit noticeable on the highway, but as soon as the 18-speaker Harman Kardon system was turned on, it was immediately drowned out. The wooden and leather interior feels very comfortable to the touch, and even though the child was kicking the back seat, no marks were left. However, the range dropped quickly when climbing hills; the round trip of 200 kilometers used up almost half the battery, so charging needs to be planned in advance.
