2021 BMW X7 xDrive40i Pure Excellence Review

The competition in Malaysia's luxury full-size SUV market remains fierce in 2023. Demand for seven-seater models among family users continues to grow steadily, and expectations for luxury features and driving quality are also rising. As BMW's flagship SUV, the 2021 X7 xDrive40i Pure Excellence, with its 3.0T inline-six engine, fully equipped intelligent safety system, and executive-level space, has been attracting attention since its launch. This time, we will conduct a comprehensive analysis through static experience and dynamic testing to determine whether this vehicle can truly meet the "all-round" needs of high-end family users.
Approaching the vehicle, its length of 5151mm and wheelbase of 3105mm firmly establish its flagship SUV presence. The overall style leans towards being steady but not lacking in sportiness. At the front, the iconic kidney grille is large and complemented by chrome accents, giving it a highly recognizable appearance. The LED angel-eye headlights are sharply styled and come standard with automatic headlights and front fog lights, maximizing functionality. The side body lines flow smoothly, with the waistline extending from the front fender to the rear enhancing its muscular feel. The 21-inch wheels paired with 285/45 R21 tires ensure grip while also enhancing visual impact. The rear design is minimalist, with L-shaped LED taillights complementing the front headlights. The layout of the rear fog lights and reversing sensors is practical, and the overall appearance is definitely in the "luxury car that's instantly recognizable" category.
Opening the door, a sense of luxury greets you. The dashboard is wrapped in soft-touch materials, paired with woodgrain and metallic trims, offering a delicate tactile experience. The 12.3-inch touchscreen infotainment display is connected to the fully digital instrument cluster, with a clear UI design and smooth operation. The front seats are electrically adjustable with lumbar support, ensuring long-distance driving comfort. The rear seats adopt a 40:20:40 split-fold design, allowing the expansion of cargo space when folded. The trunk offers a regular capacity of 326 liters, which perfectly meets the luggage needs of family outings. In terms of configuration, it is equipped with 5-zone automatic climate control, a Harman Kardon 16-speaker sound system, a HUD head-up display, rear seat LCD screens, and more, while keyless entry and automatic parking enhance everyday convenience.
Sitting in the driver’s seat, the 3.0T inline-six engine specifications are impressive: a maximum horsepower of 345PS and a torque output range from 1500 to 5200rpm, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and xDrive all-wheel-drive system. The engine responds quickly when starting, and a slight press on the accelerator offers a noticeable pushback feel. The manufacturer claims a 0-100 km/h acceleration in 6.1 seconds, and during our real-world tests, even when fully loaded with seven passengers, overtaking was effortless. Switching to Sport mode makes the gearbox shift logic more aggressive, and the steering wheel feels heavier, enhancing driving pleasure. In Comfort mode, the car is more smooth-oriented, suitable for daily commuting. The suspension is tuned for comfort, filtering out most vibrations when handling uneven roads. Cornering is stable, with good control of body roll, balancing comfort and stability.
In terms of fuel consumption, the official combined figure is 9.5L/100km. In our tests over 50km in urban traffic and highway conditions respectively, the actual fuel consumption was about 10.2L/100km. Considering the vehicle's weight and power output, this performance ranks above average among its peers. Noise control is very well done, with minimal wind and tire noise at highway speeds. Engine noise only slightly penetrates the cabin when the RPM exceeds 3000. The braking performance is stable, with the vehicle maintaining composure during emergency stops, showing no obvious nosediving effect.
To summarize, the core advantages of the 2021 BMW X7 xDrive40i Pure Excellence are prominent: powerful performance, spacious interior, fully equipped features, especially the safety features — lane change assist, lane departure warning, active braking, all of which come as standard, maximizing safety. Compared to its class rival, the Mercedes-Benz GLS 450, this car offers better value for money and richer features; compared to the Audi Q7, it surpasses in terms of space and luxury.
This car is very suitable for family users who value balanced performance, especially those who need to travel fully loaded frequently while having requirements for driving quality. Young buyers who pursue luxurious comfort and have sufficient budget will also be attracted by its features and performance. Overall, it is a flagship SUV with "no obvious shortcomings," capable of meeting daily family needs while occasionally offering driving pleasure. It is a worthy choice in the luxury large SUV market.
