The luxury pure electric SUV market has been heating up in recent years locally. Consumers are not only seeking the technological feel and environmental attributes of electric vehicles but also unwilling to compromise on the texture and practicality of luxury brands. The BMW iX xDrive40 aims to tap into this executive-level pure electric SUV niche. As the flagship SUV of BMW's pure electric family, its core selling points are not just the brand's prestige but also its 326PS dual-motor all-wheel-drive system, 425km official range, and luxurious features and driving quality rarely seen in its class. During this test drive, we will focus on its static performance, real-world driving experience, and practicality as a daily driver to see if it meets the demands of local high-end users.

At first glance, the iX xDrive40 stands out with a design that completely breaks away from the traditional SUV's rugged lines, featuring a rounded and smooth style while still retaining BMW's iconic kidney grille. However, the grille is now sealed, integrated with radars and cameras, maximizing functionality. The front end's LED headlights are slender and sharp, complemented by air intakes on both sides below, giving it a recognizable appearance. The side profile features lines stretching from the A-pillar to the rear, avoiding overly complicated creases. The 21-inch wheels are appropriately sized and not overly flashy. At the rear, the taillights adopt a through-type design, which looks striking when lit up at night. Beneath the rear hatch, there is a small spoiler that adds a touch of sportiness. The lighting system is fully equipped with LED technology, and practical features like automatic headlights and daytime running lights are reliable.

Upon entering the cabin, the first impression is the clean layout brought by BMW's latest iDrive 8 system—a 14.9-inch curved central control screen integrated with a 12.3-inch full LCD instrument panel, replacing almost all physical buttons. The touch response of the central control screen is smooth, the UI logic is clear, and common functions like navigation and media can be quickly accessed. The interior materials feel solid, with the top of the dashboard and the inner sides of the door panels wrapped in soft materials, complemented by wood grain trim and metal accents, creating a strong sense of luxury. The front seats are electrically adjustable, with the driver’s seat featuring a memory function. Both seats offer good support and wrapping, ensuring comfort during long rides. The rear seats are split-foldable 60:40. Thanks to the 3000mm wheelbase, even passengers who are 180cm tall can enjoy two fists' worth of knee room in the rear, with another one and a half fists of headroom, making the cabin quite spacious. In terms of storage, the door pockets can accommodate large water bottles, and the central armrest box offers ample storage space. The trunk provides a standard capacity of 500L, which can be further expanded by folding the rear seats—sufficient for family trips.

In terms of power, the iX xDrive40 is equipped with dual motors at the front and rear, delivering a combined output of 326PS and 630N·m of torque, achieving an official 0-100km/h acceleration time of 6.1 seconds. During actual driving, the initial response is very immediate; a slight press of the accelerator results in a noticeable push-back experience. Mid to high-speed acceleration is also robust, providing confidence while overtaking. It offers ECO, COMFORT, and SPORT driving modes. In ECO mode, the power output is smoother, suitable for daily commuting; in SPORT mode, the throttle response becomes more sensitive, and the steering wheel gains weight, making the driving experience more engaging. As for the chassis, the combination of a front double-wishbone and rear multi-link independent suspension leans towards comfort while maintaining a certain level of support. When going over speed bumps or uneven roads, the suspension effectively filters out vibrations without harsh feedback. While cornering, body roll is well-contained, providing excellent stability. The all-wheel-drive system performs commendably on wet surfaces, with no wheel slippage during starts or acceleration, ensuring a highly stable ride quality.

As an electric vehicle, range and charging are key points. The official range is 425km. In our test under mixed road conditions (about 60% city roads, 40% highways, air conditioning at 24°C), the actual range was roughly 380km, achieving a rate of nearly 90%, which is relatively stable. In terms of fast charging, it takes only 31 minutes to go from 10% to 80%, while slow charging takes 8.25 hours. For daily use, fast charging is sufficient to meet energy replenishment needs. Noise control is also well done, with almost no noise during low-speed driving, and wind and tire noise are well suppressed during high-speed driving. Coupled with the comfort of the seats, long-distance driving does not feel tiring. The energy recovery system has three adjustable levels. In the highest level, releasing the accelerator produces a noticeable drag effect, essentially enabling one-pedal driving. In the lowest level, it is close to the coasting experience of a fuel-powered car and is easy to adapt to.

To summarize, the core advantages of the iX xDrive40 are clear: luxurious interior quality, powerful yet smooth performance, stable range capabilities, and comprehensive safety features—functions like lane-change assistance, lane departure warning, and automatic emergency braking are all standard, and there are six airbags, maximizing safety. Compared to other electric SUVs in the same class, such as the Mercedes-Benz EQC or Audi e-tron, it offers more space, more comprehensive tech features, and actually has good cost-effectiveness. It is more suitable for families who prioritize luxury quality and driving experience, or young executives passionate about technology—meeting daily commuting needs and managing long-distance trips, while also aligning with brand prestige. If you are looking for a pure electric SUV that combines luxury, performance, and practicality, the iX xDrive40 is indeed a compelling choice.

This iX has been driven for three months, super stable when overtaking on the highway on rainy days, and the automatic braking helped me avoid a cut-in once. The back seat fits three big guys without feeling cramped, fast charging for half an hour is enough for a week's commute, but the fingerprints on the center control screen are a bit annoying. Overall, it's great!

Previously drove a fuel-powered X5, switched to the iX xDrive40 to try out a luxurious pure electric. The exterior is avant-garde but not stunning, a fair 4 points; the interior is full of tech vibes, with the curved screen and crystal gear lever feeling very premium, but the rear space is slightly more cramped compared to the X5, deducting 1 point. The performance is really amazing, 6.1 seconds acceleration makes overtaking in Kuala Lumpur's morning rush hour super enjoyable, and the all-wheel drive is extremely stable, even driving on the highway during heavy rain feels steady. The range is sufficient for Malaysia, a weekend trip to Penang is a one-way 290km, and a quick charge of half an hour makes recharging very convenient. A minor downside is that the infotainment system occasionally lags, but it's not a big issue. Overall, very satisfied, it's definitely a great choice for luxury electric vehicles!

As a 2023 iX xDrive40 owner, after driving in Malaysia for half a year, I honestly feel I made the right choice! Previously driving a fuel-powered X5, switching to full electric has completely eliminated range anxiety—commuting in Kuala Lumpur city only requires one charge per week, and for weekend highway trips to Penang, the 425km range is more than sufficient. Fast charging takes 31 minutes to replenish 80%, just enough time to have a cup of teh tarik at the service area. Performance deserves a full 5-star rating without exaggeration, acceleration in 6.1 seconds makes overtaking super enjoyable, and xDrive keeps the car impressively stable on rainy highways. The exterior design has a super high head-turning rate, with the big grille + floating roof, parking it under the Petronas Twin Towers is ultra eye-catching! Safety gets a 4-star rating because it’s missing a 360-degree surround view camera, only having a rear camera. Reversing in Malaysia's narrow parking lots requires extra care. But overall, it's worth the RM418k price tag, more premium compared to the Model X and with more reliable range than the EQC. The rear seating is also spacious enough for family members, making it a smart choice for luxury EVs!
