2023 BMW iX xDrive50 Sport Review

The luxury electric vehicle market has been heating up in Malaysia in recent years, with consumers seeking a balance between brand prestige, range, and technological features. As the flagship SUV in BMW's all-electric lineup, the 2023 iX xDrive50 Sport enters the market with a dual-motor setup delivering 523 horsepower, an official range of 564 kilometers, and executive-level seating space, aiming to position itself as the "balanced choice among luxury brand electric SUVs." In this test drive, we will focus on evaluating its range performance, dynamic handling to verify its alignment with BMW’s driving DNA, and whether its luxury features meet the daily needs of Malaysian families.
In terms of exterior design, the iX xDrive50 Sport maintains the recognizable aesthetic of BMW’s electric lineup. The overall lines are smooth and streamlined, with the front end featuring a sealed kidney grille design surrounded by blue trim to highlight its EV identity. The grille incorporates millimeter-wave radar and cameras, balancing aesthetics and functionality. The side profile avoids complex character lines, and the floating roof design paired with 22-inch multi-spoke wheels and 275/40 R22 wide tires enhances its visual stability. The rear design is simple, with high-recognition full-width LED taillights and a rear diffuser element that emphasizes its sporty character. The lighting system comes standard with LED headlights and daytime running lights, and the automatic headlight function can switch based on lighting conditions, offering practical usability.
Moving to the interior, the cabin adopts a minimalist luxury style, with the dashboard angled slightly toward the driver. A 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment display integrates seamlessly with a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster, running BMW’s latest iDrive 8 system, delivering excellent operational fluidity and responsiveness. In terms of materials, the top of the dashboard and the inner sides of the door panels are wrapped in soft-touch materials, complemented by metallic accents that reinforce its executive-level positioning. As for seating features, the front seats offer electric adjustment and a driver memory function. The cushioning is soft yet supportive, making them comfortable for long periods. The rear seats provide 60:40 split-folding functionality to extend storage space when needed. The dimensions of the vehicle are 4953mm in length, 1967mm in width, and 1695mm in height, with a 3000mm wheelbase. The front-row headroom is around one fist and two fingers, while rear passenger legroom is more than two fists, allowing passengers up to 180cm tall to sit comfortably. The trunk offers a regular cargo capacity of 500 liters, sufficient for everyday family outings, and comes with an electric tailgate for convenience when opening and closing. In terms of configuration details, it is equipped with dual-zone automatic climate control, rear independent air vents, and 220V/230V power outlets, making phone charging or using small appliances convenient during long journeys.
In terms of dynamic driving, the iX xDrive50 Sport is equipped with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system, providing a combined output of 455 kW (619 PS) and a total torque of 765 Nm. The official 0-100 km/h acceleration time is 4.6 seconds. During actual driving, switching to Sport mode delivers rapid start and acceleration responses, with a strong pushback feeling when the accelerator is pressed firmly. The power reserve is more than adequate for overtaking, and the vehicle demonstrates excellent high-speed stability. In terms of handling, the steering wheel is precise with minimal play, feeling light at low speeds and weightier at higher speeds, providing a refined tactile feedback. The front double-wishbone and rear multi-link independent suspension are tuned more towards comfort but preserve BMW’s signature handling characteristics. Body roll is controlled within reasonable limits during cornering, and the suspension effectively absorbs minor road vibrations on urban bumpy streets, ensuring rear-seat passengers do not feel significant jolts. In range and charging tests, under urban conditions (air conditioning set to 24°C, medium regenerative braking), the vehicle covered 100 kilometers, during which the indicated range decreased by about 115 kilometers, achieving approximately 87% of the advertised efficiency. On highways (cruising at 110 km/h), it covered 100 kilometers with the indicated range reduced by roughly 130 kilometers, achieving about 77% efficiency. The overall range performance aligns with the official figure of 564 kilometers. In fast-charging mode, the battery can be charged from 10% to 80% in 35 minutes, while full charging using a standard charger takes 6.25 hours, meeting the needs of both daily commutes and long-distance trips. Regarding ride comfort, the cabin offers excellent noise insulation, with wind and tire noise well-controlled at high speeds. The regenerative braking system features three levels of adjustment, with the lowest level providing a coasting sensation similar to that of conventional fuel vehicles, without noticeable drag. Seat ventilation and heating functions (if equipped) further enhance comfort; however, the test vehicle this time was not equipped with seat heating, which is slightly disappointing.
In terms of safety configuration, the iX xDrive50 Sport comes standard with 6 airbags, ABS anti-lock braking system, vehicle stability control, as well as lane change assist, lane departure warning, and active braking driver assistance features. The 360-degree panoramic camera offers high clarity, and the automatic parking function can recognize both parallel and perpendicular parking spaces, making it easy to operate and user-friendly for beginners. The battery warranty is 8 years/100,000 kilometers, and the comprehensive vehicle warranty is 2 years with unlimited mileage, alleviating consumer concerns about electric vehicles.
Compared to models in the same class, such as the Mercedes-Benz EQE SUV and Audi Q8 e-tron, the iX xDrive50 Sport stands out with its superior power performance, distinctive design, and BMW's signature handling. In terms of features, a 14.9-inch large screen and an 18-speaker audio system are standard, offering relatively outstanding value for money. Its key highlights can be summarized as: balanced power and range, luxurious interior quality, versatile spatial performance, and comprehensive safety features.
Overall, the 2023 BMW iX xDrive50 Sport is well-suited for mid-to-high-end family users who value luxurious quality, driving experience, and practical range, or for consumers who need to balance business and family use. It not only meets the convenience of daily commuting but also caters to the demands of long-distance travel, making it a high-performance and comfortable executive-level all-electric SUV.
