2023 BMW X7 xDrive40i M Sport Review

In the executive luxury SUV market, consumers are increasingly demanding in terms of space, features, and driving quality. The 2023 BMW X7 xDrive40i M Sport, as a popular model in this segment, is now making an appearance with upgraded features and more balanced performance. The main purpose of our test drive this time is to see whether it meets the needs of target users in daily use, long-distance driving, and occasional light off-road scenarios, while also verifying if its core selling points truly deliver.
From the exterior, this X7 maintains the imposing style of a large BMW SUV, with a large dual kidney grille at the front, paired with black trim and the M Sport package's front bumper, giving it a highly recognizable look. The body lines extend from the hood to the rear, with straight and powerful waistlines, complemented by 22-inch dual-color wheels for a well-proportioned side profile. The rear features split LED taillights with a simple design, a diffuser-style rear bumper, and dual exhausts on each side, adding a sporty feel. The lighting system comes standard with LED, and the inclusion of automatic headlights and front fog lights enhances nighttime driving convenience.
Stepping inside, the luxurious feel of the interior is immediately apparent. The dashboard is wrapped in a substantial amount of soft-touch materials, combined with metal trim and wood grain panels, providing a pleasant tactile feel. The 14.9-inch curved central control screen and full LCD instrument panel are seamlessly integrated, offering smooth operation and a clear interface. The multifunction steering wheel features paddle shifters, is electrically adjustable, and supports memory functions. The standard HUD head-up display allows the driver to avoid frequently looking down at the instrument panel during daily driving. The front seats offer electric adjustment, heating, and ventilation, along with memory functions, ensuring comfort even during long drives. The rear-row air conditioning is independently controlled, and the middle-row seats can be electrically adjusted and folded in a 40:20:40 split, while the third-row seats fold in a 50:50 split, allowing for flexible configurations to accommodate different storage needs. The panoramic sunroof comes standard, providing excellent interior lighting when opened, while the sunshade effectively blocks sunlight when needed.
In terms of space, this X7 measures 5,151mm in length, 2,000mm in width, and 1,805mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,105mm—ensuring ample space for three rows of seating. After adjusting the front seats to a comfortable position, there is about two fists worth of headroom, and the legroom is spacious. When the middle-row seats are adjusted to the maximum rearward position, there is more than two fists of legroom and about a fist and a half of headroom, making it comfortable even for three adult passengers. The third-row space is not particularly roomy for adults, but it is sufficient for short trips and is suitable for children or smaller passengers. In terms of storage capacity, the trunk has a standard volume of 326L, which can be expanded by folding down the third row, providing enough room for several suitcases. The cabin also features multiple storage compartments, such as the central armrest box, door storage slots, and cup holders, which makes storing small items convenient for daily use.
As for performance, it is equipped with a 3.0T inline six-cylinder turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum power of 381PS and a peak torque of 520N·m, paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The official 0-100km/h acceleration time is 5.8 seconds. During actual driving, the start is very brisk, with responsive throttle and ample torque output at low rpm, making urban overtaking very easy. When switched to sport mode, the power output becomes more direct, gear shifts faster, and the push-back feeling is noticeable. At highway cruising speeds, the engine maintains low RPMs and noise control is excellent. In terms of handling, the steering wheel is precise with minimal play, feeling light at low speeds and stable at high speeds, making it very easy to drive. The suspension system consists of a front double-wishbone and a rear multi-link setup, tuned more towards comfort. However, it provides enough support during cornering, and there is minimal body roll. When driving on bumpy roads, the suspension effectively filters out most of the vibrations, ensuring comfort for passengers inside the car.
In terms of fuel consumption, the official combined fuel consumption is 9.5L/100km. During our test drive, which was mainly on city roads with a small portion on highways, the actual fuel consumption was around 11L. Considering its weight and power, this performance is quite reasonable. The braking performance is good, with a linear feedback from the brake pedal, evenly distributed braking force, and the car remains stable during emergency braking. Regarding noise control, wind noise and tire noise are not noticeable during high-speed driving. Engine noise does enter the cabin during acceleration, but it’s not harsh, and the quietness during daily driving is excellent.
In terms of safety features, this X7 comes standard with six airbags, lane change assist, lane departure warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control (ACC), 360-degree panoramic cameras, and automatic parking assistance, all of which effectively enhance driving safety. For comfort features, it includes heated and ventilated front seats, independent rear air conditioning, and a Harman Kardon sound system (16 speakers), making daily use more comfortable.
Overall, the core strengths of the 2023 BMW X7 xDrive40i M Sport are very clear: spacious interior, rich features, strong power, and excellent driving quality. Compared to its counterpart the Mercedes GLS, it offers more agile handling and additional features like a HUD heads-up display and electrically adjustable rear seats, providing better value for money. Compared to the Audi Q7, it stands out in terms of luxury and space performance.
This car is suitable for families who value luxury and space, especially for those who often need to travel with multiple people or take long-distance trips. It can meet the needs of daily city commuting, handle long-distance travel, and even tackle occasional light off-road conditions. If you are looking for a well-balanced, fully-equipped large luxury SUV, this X7 is worth considering.
