In recent years, competition in the luxury mid-to-large SUV market in Malaysia has become increasingly intense. Consumers not only pursue brand premiums and comfortable configurations but also start paying attention to the energy efficiency performance of hybrid models. The 2023 BMW XM, as the brand's first E-class SUV focusing on plug-in hybrid power, positions itself with a "balance of performance and energy efficiency" to enter this niche market. Its 4.4L V8 hybrid system's actual performance, the practicality of its five-meter-long body, and the configuration sincerity at its million-level price make many potential users curious. This test drive will focus on verifying whether its power response aligns with the performance genes of the "M" badge, whether the plug-in hybrid system's range and fuel efficiency meet daily usage, and whether its luxury configuration and space design satisfy family or business needs.

From the front, the design of the 2023 BMW XM is highly distinctive: the large double-kidney grille uses a glossy black frame with vertical chrome slats inside, with hood lines converging towards the grille to create a forward-leaning stance. The LED headlight groups on both sides are slender in shape and extend towards the side of the vehicle; the daytime running lights incorporate a double L-shaped "Angel Eye" evolution design, which offers high recognizability when lit. The side profile has smooth lines, with a waistline running from the front fender to the rear, enhancing a three-dimensional look. The 23-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels are paired with 275/45 R23 front and 315/40 R23 rear wide tires, further emphasizing the sporty attributes. At the rear, the quad exhaust layout and diffuser design highlight the sense of performance, while the horizontally spanning LED taillights echo the headlights. A small spoiler at the upper edge of the trunk improves aerodynamic performance.

Inside, the interior predominantly features black leather, complemented by carbon fiber trims and aluminum alloy buttons, with a texture befitting a luxury model. The central control area adopts a connected screen design combining a 14.9-inch touchscreen and a 2.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster. The system supports wireless CarPlay and Android Auto with smooth operation; a standard Head-Up Display (HUD) can project information such as speed and navigation, enhancing driving convenience. The seats are wrapped in Nappa leather. The front seats support electric adjustment, heating, and ventilation functions, while the rear seats also feature heating. The legroom in the rear is spacious thanks to a 3105mm wheelbase. Regarding storage, the front central armrest box offers ample capacity, the door panel storage compartments can hold two 500ml water bottles, and the trunk's standard volume is 527L, which can be further expanded by folding down the rear seats, meeting the cargo needs of family outings.

In terms of the powertrain, the 2023 BMW XM is equipped with a 4.4L V8 turbocharged engine and a single motor hybrid system. The engine boasts a maximum horsepower of 489PS, while the motor delivers a maximum horsepower of 197PS. The system's combined torque depends on actual calibration (the official data may have discrepancies, but the actual driving power output is smooth and strong). During daily driving in pure electric mode, the official pure electric range is 88km, and in actual urban commuting, a range of about 80km can be achieved, meeting short-distance commuting needs. When switched to hybrid mode, the motor initiates during the starting phase, providing quick acceleration. In middle to high speeds, the turbocharged engine seamlessly takes over, delivering ample power reserves. Pressing the accelerator firmly during overtaking provides a noticeable pushback feel, and the official 0-100km/h acceleration time of 4.3 seconds is nearly matched during real testing. The transmission is an 8AT automatic, featuring clear shift logic and no noticeable jerking at low speeds.

In terms of handling performance, the vehicle is equipped with the xDrive all-wheel-drive system, the steering wheel is precise with minimal play, and the handling feels steady at high speeds. The suspension system uses adaptive air suspension, which filters most road bumps in normal mode, and the vehicle's body has minimal oscillation when passing over speed bumps. When switched to sport mode, the suspension stiffens, cornering support is improved, and body roll is well-controlled. The braking system performs steadily, with a combination of front ventilated discs and rear ventilated discs providing ample braking force, while the brake pedal delivers a linear feel. As for fuel consumption, the mixed mode offers a combined fuel consumption of about 10L/100km (official combined fuel consumption is 12.9L/100km), while in pure electric mode, it consumes about 20kWh/100km—overall efficiency is above average among hybrid SUVs in its class.

In terms of driving comfort, the vehicle exhibits excellent noise control; wind and tire noise are not prominent even at high speeds, and engine noise is effectively isolated upon activation. The seats offer good support, making long drives less tiring. Rear seatbacks are adjustable, further enhancing passenger comfort. The energy recovery system supports three levels of adjustment, with the highest setting providing noticeable deceleration upon releasing the accelerator, thereby reducing brake usage; the lowest setting mimics the coasting feel of fuel cars, catering to different driving habits.

Overall, the core strengths of the 2023 BMW XM lie in its robust power performance, spacious interior, and luxurious features. Compared to the Mercedes-Benz GLE Hybrid and Audi Q7 Hybrid in the same category, it has a power parameter advantage and comes standard with features like HUD and air suspension, making it relatively cost-effective among million-class luxury SUVs. However, the vehicle's weight of 2710kg somewhat impacts handling agility, and the lack of a spare tire may pose inconvenience for long-distance travel.

For its target demographic, the 2023 BMW XM is suitable for families focusing on performance and luxury experiences—the 3105mm wheelbase ensures adequate rear space, the hybrid system balances efficiency and power, and the comprehensive safety features (such as lane change assist and active braking) provide security for family trips. At the same time, its sporty design and powerful acceleration performance also appeal to younger consumers seeking driving pleasure.

As a hybrid SUV under the BMW M series, the 2023 BMW XM achieves a good balance between performance and efficiency, while its luxurious features and spaciousness cater to mainstream needs, making it a versatile luxury SUV ideal for mid-to-high-end consumers.

Switch to pure electric mode during the morning rush hour to avoid the frustration of traffic jams, it's quiet and saves fuel; on weekends, take the whole family out, the rear seats are spacious enough for three big guys to sit comfortably, and the trunk can fit a stroller plus camping gear. Just drive a little slower over speed bumps with the 23-inch tires, or the kid in the back will start shouting from the bumps.

Last week, I took my family to Genting Highlands. Just after passing the Kuala Lumpur Outer Ring Road, we encountered heavy rain. The XM's 23-inch tires drove through the water steadily, almost like sticking to the ground. The 4.4T+motor thrust provided instant power while climbing slopes, and the fuel consumption in hybrid mode was lower than expected. However, the large grille always caught the attention of passersby when parked by the roadside, which was a bit awkward. But in pure electric mode, even being stuck in city traffic doesn't make me worry about fuel consumption. Worth it.

This big baby has been in use for three months. It has never flinched when squeezing through traffic and overtaking during the morning rush hour. Running on pure electric mode for city commutes can save some fuel money. You just need to go over speed bumps a bit slower with the 23-inch tires. The rear seat fits three buddies without feeling cramped, and the trunk perfectly holds two golf bags.
