Specs

In recent years, Malaysia's performance car market has been gradually recovering. Many brands have started to focus on the compact performance car segment. These types of cars retain the practicality for daily commuting while also meeting the needs of users who occasionally want to unleash their driving enthusiasm. The 2023 Honda Civic Type R, as a popular model in this segment, comes with 310 PS of maximum horsepower, a pure manual transmission, and track-level chassis tuning as its core selling points, attracting significant attention from performance car enthusiasts. The main goal of this test drive is to assess how well this car balances daily commuting and track performance, and to see if it truly combines the practicality for "grocery shopping" and the fun of "spirited driving."

From a distance, the overall style of the 2023 Civic Type R leans towards understated sportiness, without overly exaggerated aerodynamic kits, yet the details still reflect its performance-oriented identity. The front features a large honeycomb-style grille, paired with sharp LED headlamp units on both sides. The daytime running lights adopt an L-shaped design, making them highly recognizable. The hood has two prominent ridges, adding a muscular touch. The side profile of the car is sleek, with 10-spoke 20-inch alloy wheels paired with 245/30 R20 wide tires, giving off a sporty visual effect. The side skirts and vents on the front fenders further optimize the aerodynamics. At the rear, the iconic triple-round exhaust layout and small-sized spoiler are classic Type R designs. The LED taillight clusters feature a smoked finish that aligns with the sporty style of the car, and the diffuser design under the rear bumper is clean and unadorned.

Sitting inside, the interior is primarily black, complemented by red stitching and an Alcantara-covered steering wheel to create a performance car atmosphere. The dashboard layout is simple, with a 7-inch touchscreen placed in the center, supporting Bluetooth connectivity and CarPlay functionality, and offering smooth operation. Below the touchscreen, physical buttons have been retained for easier operations during driving. The instrument panel adopts a fully digital design, capable of displaying performance data such as horsepower output, torque, and oil temperature, with the interface changing when switching driving modes. The seats are manually adjustable sporty bucket seats with strong bolstering to provide adequate support during intensive driving, although they may feel slightly rigid during long rides. The rear seats can be folded down in a 60:40 split ratio, offering a trunk capacity of 414 liters, which is sufficient for daily luggage or larger items. In terms of features, it comes equipped with dual-zone automatic air conditioning, rear air vents, and an 8-speaker audio system to meet daily usage needs.

In terms of power, the 2023 Civic Type R is equipped with a 2.0T turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum horsepower of 310 PS and peak torque of 400 N·m, paired with a 6-speed manual transmission. The clutch engagement point is clear during takeoff, and coordinating the clutch and throttle is easy to master, allowing even beginners to quickly adapt. Torque output is ample in the low RPM range, reaching maximum torque at 2500 rpm, making takeoffs and mid-range accelerations quite brisk. The official 0-100 km/h acceleration time is 5.5 seconds, and in actual testing under Sport mode, it achieves a similar result. Switching to +R mode makes the throttle response sharper, while the gearbox offers a tight shifting feel with clear gears and a strong sense of engagement, providing the driver with a strong desire for control.

The chassis tuning leans towards sportiness, with a front MacPherson strut + rear multi-link independent suspension system delivering stable performance in corners and effective body roll control. The steering wheel offers precise handling with minimal dead zones, providing clear feedback on road conditions. When driving over rough roads, the suspension quickly filters out minor vibrations, but comfort in the rear seats slightly decreases when passing speed bumps or large potholes. The braking system performs excellently, with a combination of front ventilated discs and rear ventilated discs offering linear braking power. During emergency braking, the vehicle maintains a stable posture without noticeable nose dive. In terms of fuel economy, the fuel consumption under normal commuting conditions is about 9.5L per 100 km, and it can drop to 7.8L per 100 km on highways, which is reasonable for a performance car.

For noise insulation, wind and tire noise control at high speeds is average, which is a common issue with performance cars. Although the seats offer good wrapping, the lumbar support is insufficient, making long drives tiring. However, these minor drawbacks are not a significant concern for users who pursue driving pleasure.

Overall, the core advantages of the 2023 Honda Civic Type R lie in its powerful performance, precise handling, and practical space design. Compared to models in the same category, its manual transmission is a standout feature, providing drivers with a purer driving experience. In terms of features, the fully digital instrument cluster, 7-inch touchscreen, dual-zone automatic climate control, and other configurations meet daily use needs. This car suits users who need a vehicle for daily commutes but also pursue driving enjoyment, such as young professionals or performance car enthusiasts. If you are looking for a performance car that can balance family use, the 2023 Civic Type R is worth considering.

Feeling super confident cutting through traffic during the morning rush hour, the 2.0T+MT gives an instant push-back sensation that completely erases any sleepiness! No crowding with three brothers in the back row, and the 414L trunk can fit both a surfboard and camping gear. The only minor drawback: the 20-inch low-profile tires need extra care over speed bumps, but with this engine sound and handling, it's worth every penny!

Last Saturday, I took my family to the orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain. Just after passing the congested section of the Kuala Lumpur Outer Ring Road, we encountered a sudden rainstorm while heading into the mountains. The 2.0T thrust was just adequate for the slippery uphill road, and the LSD prevented the front wheels from slipping. The real-time torque display on the full LCD instrument panel gave me confidence, and the 6 airbags along with the vehicle stability system silently provided a sense of safety during cornering (a safety rating of 4 is not an exaggeration). The child in the back seat slept soundly in the ISO FIX car seat, a 7-inch central control with CarPlay played children’s songs, and the 8-speaker system delivered unexpectedly delicate audio quality (an interior rating of 4 is well-deserved). Parked at the entrance of the orchard, the red badge spoiler and 20-inch wheels caught the attention of many passersby, but the thin car paint deducts points for the exterior (a score of 4 is reasonable).

Every day during the traffic jam on the commute, while slowly following with the MT, the ankle feels a bit sore, but once the light turns green and the accelerator is deeply pressed, the 310 horsepower pushes forward, overtaking and lane-changing feels exhilarating! With two buddies and backpacks in the backseat, it doesn’t feel cramped, and the hatchback trunk can fit the weekend camping gear. Just need to be careful and drive slowly over speed bumps with the 20-inch low-profile tires~

As a car owner, I must say that this Type R is simply made for driving enthusiasts in Malaysia! It’s incomparable to the regular Civic I used to drive. With its 310hp 2.0T engine, the pushback feeling when overtaking on the North-South Highway makes the passengers scream. The interior may not be luxurious, but the Alcantara steering wheel and metallic pedals give it a full-on sporty feel. However, the manually adjustable seats can be a little tiring for long-distance drives. During rush hour traffic in Kuala Lumpur, the 6-speed MT may test your leg strength, but the precise shifting feel becomes a source of enjoyment instead. On weekend drives up Genting Highlands, the grip from a front-wheel drive car is so impressive, it feels as if the 245/30 R20 tires are glued to the road around corners. The only downside is that the rear seat space is a bit tight for passengers over 180cm tall, but who buys a Type R to carry a full load of passengers anyway? At RM400,000, the price is considered reasonable among performance cars in Malaysia, and the 5-year unlimited mileage warranty adds assurance.
