2023 Hyundai IONIQ 6 Max AWD Review

As competition in the Malaysian electric vehicle market intensifies, the E-segment electric sedan category has gradually become the focus area for major brands. Consumers' demand for vehicles that combine range, configuration, and driving experience is increasingly evident. The Hyundai IONIQ 6 Max AWD, as the flagship electric sedan under the brand, enters the market with an official range of 519 kilometers, a combined power output of 330PS, and a wealth of smart configurations. Many potential buyers are curious whether it can stand out among competitors in the same class. In this test drive, we focused on verifying its actual range performance, dynamic handling capabilities, and whether its features truly cater to daily usage scenarios in the local context.
The IONIQ 6 features a streamlined exterior design, with an overall style leaning towards simplicity and sportiness. The front lacks a traditional grille, using a closed front panel combined with slim LED daytime running lights, giving it a high level of recognizability. The car's side profile is sleek, with a sloping roofline extending from the A-pillar to the rear, not only reducing wind resistance but also creating a more harmonious side proportion. At the rear, the continuous LED taillights echo the front design, with the Hyundai badge embedded in the middle of the taillight assembly, providing a clear visual effect when lit. The lighting system comes standard with LED light sources across all trims, and the Max AWD version features automatic headlights and front fog lights, ensuring sufficient convenience for everyday use.
Stepping inside, the interior is primarily dark-toned, and the dashboard adopts a layered design. The upper section consists of a dual-screen setup featuring a 12.3-inch central touchscreen and a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster. The operational logic is straightforward, and the touchscreen responds swiftly. Beneath the central screen, some physical buttons are retained for controlling air conditioning temperature and volume, making blind operation more convenient while driving. In terms of materials, the upper dashboard and inner sides of the door panels are wrapped in soft-touch materials, complemented by metal trim, giving it an overall premium feel suitable for a vehicle in the 300,000 RMB price range. As for features, the Max AWD version includes standard equipment such as a HUD head-up display, keyless entry, electrically adjustable front seats, independent rear air conditioning vents, and a 220V power outlet in the rear. Both convenience and comfort for daily use are well accounted for.
The car measures 4855mm × 1880mm × 1495mm, with a wheelbase of 2950mm, which places it within the mainstream range for E-segment sedans. The front row provides ample space, with a 175cm tall passenger having a fist's worth of headroom even after adjusting the seat. The rear legroom exceeds two fists, and the sloping roofline has minimal impact on headroom; passengers of the same height have about four-finger space above their heads. Regarding storage capabilities, the front center armrest box offers moderate capacity, while the door storage compartments can fit two 500ml bottles of mineral water. The trunk has a standard capacity of 401 liters, and the rear seats can be folded down in a 60:40 split, expanding the space for carrying bulkier items such as strollers or large luggage.
In terms of performance, the IONIQ 6 Max AWD is powered by a single-motor rear-wheel-drive system, delivering a combined power of 330PS and maximum torque of 605N·m, with an official 0-100km/h acceleration time of 5.1 seconds. During actual driving, switching to Sport mode provides an immediate power response at the start, with a linear and consistent acceleration process. Pressing the accelerator for overtaking delivers a noticeable thrust. In Eco mode, the power output becomes smoother, making it more suitable for everyday commuting. In terms of handling, the steering wheel offers moderate steering effort with minimal play and precise control. The chassis is equipped with front and rear multi-link independent suspensions, which are tuned for comfort. When passing over speed bumps or bumpy roads, the suspension absorbs most of the vibrations, keeping the car stable. When cornering, body roll is well-controlled, with no significant swaying, achieving a balance between comfort and handling.
For the range test, we chose a mixed condition of city and highway roads with a total mileage of 200 km, including about 120 km of city roads and 80 km of highways. The air conditioning was set to 24°C in automatic mode. The final displayed range consumption was 230 km, achieving approximately 87% of the announced range, which met expectations. In terms of energy consumption, the city segment consumed about 16 kWh/100 km, the highway segment about 19 kWh/100 km, with a combined energy consumption of 17.2 kWh/100 km. Based on a 77.4 kWh battery capacity, the actual range is approximately 450 km, which is sufficient for a week's commute. Regarding fast charging, the official data states that it takes 7 hours to charge from 10% to 80%. However, during actual use with a DC fast charging station, it took about 40 minutes to charge from 30% to 80%, which is fairly efficient.
As for driving comfort, the IONIQ 6 performs well in terms of sound insulation. At speeds below 60 km/h in the city, tire and wind noise are not noticeable; at 110 km/h on the highway, wind noise slightly increases but does not affect conversations inside the cabin. The energy recovery system offers three adjustable levels. At the highest level, releasing the accelerator produces noticeable drag, making it suitable for one-pedal driving; at the lowest level, it feels similar to coasting in a fuel-powered car, catering to different driving preferences. The seat cushioning is moderately soft and firm, with good support in the front seats that doesn't cause fatigue during long drives. The rear seats have a reasonable angle, sufficient cushion length, and proper leg support.
Overall, the core advantage of the IONIQ 6 Max AWD lies in its balanced performance: its official range of 519 km meets the needs of most daily users, and its actual range achievement rate is relatively stable. The powerful power output balances handling and comfort. In terms of features, practical configurations like the dual screen, HUD, and independent rear air conditioning are all included. Compared to competitors like the Tesla Model 3 Performance, the IONIQ 6 offers more space and better configurations at a more affordable price.
This car is suitable for two types of users: first, families, as the spacious rear row and trunk storage capacity can meet family travel needs; second, younger people who value tech features and driving experience, as the strong performance and abundant intelligent configurations offer a great driving experience. If your budget is around 300,000 RMB and you're looking for a well-rounded, electric sedan without significant shortcomings, the IONIQ 6 Max AWD is worth considering.
In summary, the IONIQ 6 Max AWD is a fully electric flagship sedan that balances range, performance, and features. While it doesn't adopt a particularly radical design, it excels in addressing core day-to-day needs, making it a practical and competitive choice in the Malaysian electric vehicle market.
