Specs

The luxury mid-size pure electric SUV market in Malaysia has seen a lot of activity recently, with various brands focusing on features and range. Volvo's newly launched 2025 EX90 Ultra Twin directly targets family users who prioritize safety and luxury, boasting a dual-motor powertrain with 517 PS, an official range of 623 kilometers, and comprehensive safety configurations. This time, we got a test drive vehicle to verify its actual range performance, whether its dynamic handling matches its flagship positioning, and if its seven-seat space is truly practical.

From the exterior, the EX90 Ultra Twin continues Volvo's family-style minimalist design, featuring smooth flowing lines without excessive decorations. The front’s iconic "Thor's Hammer" LED headlights retain their recognizable design but now adopt a new vertical light source design, which makes them highly distinctive when illuminated. The closed front grille paired with the Volvo emblem not only represents the identity of an electric car but also maintains a sense of luxury. The side body shoulder line runs from the front to the rear, and the combination of 21-inch dual-tone multi-spoke wheels with 265/45 R21 (front) and 295/40 R21 (rear) wide tires gives the side profile a distinctly robust look. The rear features upgraded "Viking Axe" tail lights, with a horizontally extended design matching the width of the body, creating a long and striking visual effect when lit at night. The diffuser design below the rear bumper is kept clean and simple, complementing the front's overall style.

Stepping inside, you are greeted with the overwhelming presence of Nordic minimalist style in the interior. Extensive soft materials combined with wood grain trims offer a delicate and premium tactile feel. The layout of the center console is extremely clean, with virtually no physical buttons. All functions are integrated into a 14.5-inch vertically oriented touch screen—this screen comes equipped with Volvo's latest infotainment system, which offers a smooth interface, supports voice control, wireless CarPlay connectivity, and features an intuitive and user-friendly operation logic. The 9-inch fully digital instrument cluster displays various information, including speed, range, navigation, and other data, allowing the driver to switch display modes as needed. In terms of seating, the front seats support electric adjustments and are equipped with heating and ventilation functions, providing great wrapping and support with their leather materials. The second-row seats also support electric adjustment and can be folded down in a 40:20:40 ratio. The third-row seats, on the other hand, support a 50:50 split and can be completely folded down to expand the trunk space from 324L to a larger capacity. Regarding space performance, the vehicle measures 5037mm × 1964mm × 1744mm with a wheelbase of 2985mm. Both the front and second rows offer adequate legroom; a 175cm tall passenger has approximately two fists' worth of legroom when seated. The third-row space is relatively compact, suitable for children or adults on short trips. For storage, there are multiple cup holders and storage compartments in both the front and rear rows, and the central armrest box has a large capacity, sufficient for daily use.

As for the powertrain, the EX90 Ultra Twin is equipped with front and rear dual permanent magnet synchronous motors, delivering a combined system power of 380 kW (517 PS) and a total torque of 910 Nm. The official 0-100 km/h acceleration time is just 4.9 seconds. During actual driving, the power response at the start is very quick; a light touch of the accelerator gives a strong push-back feeling. Switching to sports mode makes the power delivery even more direct—overtaking can be done with almost no delay by simply stepping hard on the accelerator. For everyday driving, the comfort mode suffices, offering smooth and linear power delivery without a jarring experience. In terms of handling, the steering feel is light and precise, making the vehicle easy to control even at low speeds. The chassis adopts a front double-wishbone and rear multi-link air suspension combination, effectively filtering out road bumps. When driving over speed bumps or uneven roads, there is almost no noticeable wobble in the car body, offering excellent comfort. While cornering, the air suspension automatically adjusts its stiffness, maintaining good body roll control and instilling confidence in the driver.

In terms of range and charging, we conducted an actual test: under city road conditions (half congested and half smooth), the vehicle's actual range achievement rate was about 85% – the official range is 623km, and it actually ran about 530km, with a power consumption of approximately 18.2kWh per 100km, slightly higher than the official 16.9kWh. Under highway conditions (average speed of 110km/h), the range achievement rate was about 78%, and the power consumption was around 20.5kWh per 100km. In terms of charging speed, using a fast charging station, it takes about 45 minutes to charge from 10% to 80%, which is basically consistent with the official claim of 0.5 hours. Slow charging, on the other hand, takes about 10 hours, making it suitable for overnight home charging.

As for driving and riding comfort, the EX90 Ultra Twin performs well. The 25-speaker Bowers & Wilkins sound system offers excellent sound quality, effectively masking external noise. The vehicle's sound insulation is also very good, with wind and tire noise kept to low levels during high-speed driving. The energy recovery system has three adjustable levels, with the highest providing strong regenerative braking, significantly decelerating the vehicle upon releasing the accelerator and nearly enabling one-pedal operation. The lowest setting offers gentler regeneration, closer to the driving feel of a fuel car. The comfort of the seats has already been mentioned, and even during long trips, passengers won't feel fatigued.

Overall, the core advantages of the 2025 Volvo EX90 Ultra Twin are very clear: Firstly, it comes fully equipped with safety features, including 9 airbags, seatbelt reminders for all seats, ACC adaptive cruise control, a 360-degree panoramic camera, among others, covering almost all mainstream active safety functions. Secondly, it boasts powerful dual-motor performance alongside smooth driving dynamics, while the range performance meets the demands of daily use. Thirdly, it offers luxurious interior materials combined with practical seven-seat space, making it ideal for family users. Compared to its peers such as the Mercedes EQE SUV and BMW iX3, the EX90 Ultra Twin has an advantage in safety features and seven-seat space, and it is relatively more affordable (RM 442,888).

This car is highly suitable for safety-conscious family users who require seven seats, especially those who frequently go on long trips with their families – its range is long enough, space is practical enough, and safety features provide plenty of protection for family members. At the same time, the dual-motor power can also satisfy occasional driving excitement needs. If you are someone who pursues Nordic luxury and values safety and comfort, the EX90 Ultra Twin is definitely worth considering.

In summary, the 2025 Volvo EX90 Ultra Twin is a "well-rounded" luxury all-electric seven-seat SUV. It has no significant shortcomings in terms of safety, performance, space, or range, making it fully capable of meeting the daily needs of family users. If you're looking for an all-electric seven-seat SUV that balances luxury and practicality, it’s a great choice.

Owner of 2025 Volvo EX90 Ultra Twin
As the owner of a 2025 Volvo EX90 Ultra Twin driving in Malaysia for three months, what I appreciate most is its interior! The moment I got into the car, I was truly amazed—the light grey Nappa leather seats feel so soft, and even during the scorching summers in KL, they somehow don't get burning hot, which is incredibly thoughtful for Southeast Asia! The 14.5-inch vertical screen on the center console is large, but surprisingly, it doesn't look out of place when paired with the wood grain panels. Instead, it gives off a minimalist and premium Scandinavian vibe. My three kids sit in the second row with individual air conditioning and electrically adjustable seats. Whenever I drive them to Genting Highlands, they're quiet the whole way, unlike before when they used to complain about being hot in our old car. In terms of safety, the car is also reassuring. Last week, on the LDP highway in PJ, I encountered a motorcycle suddenly changing lanes, and the car's automatic braking system immediately intervened to help me stop—knowing how reckless motorcycles can be in Malaysia, this function is a lifesaver! However, I deduct one point because the ISOFIX connectors in the third row are a bit hidden. It took me a while to figure out how to install the child seat, and the manual didn't clearly indicate the location. I ended up asking the salesperson for help. But overall, with 9 airbags and a 360-degree panoramic camera, I feel very at ease driving the whole family on road trips to the East Coast.

As the owner of a 2025 Volvo EX90 Ultra Twin, having driven it in Malaysia for three months, I feel that both the interior and safety features are quite impressive! Let’s talk about the interior first. The Nordic design indeed feels premium, and the 25 speakers from Bowers & Wilkins are amazing for listening to Malaysian songs during KL traffic jams. When the panoramic sunroof is opened, my family in the back row always says it feels like sitting in a "mobile glasshouse" while enjoying the mountain views towards Genting. However, there is a small regret—the leather on the third-row seats is a bit thinner compared to the first two rows. Last time, when I drove three relatives to Melaka, my aunt sitting in the back row said the seat felt a bit hard after sitting for two hours. If the material could be consistent, it would be even better; that’s why I think a 4-star rating is fair. As for safety, I must give credit! On Malaysian highways, there are often cars that change lanes suddenly. Its automatic emergency braking and lane departure warning features have truly saved me—last month, on the North-South Expressway, a Proton braked suddenly in front of me, and before I could react, the car stopped by itself, leaving just half a meter to spare! The 360-degree camera is also very helpful; when reversing in George Town's narrow alleys in Penang, even the motorcycles by the roadside are clearly visible. However, during heavy rain, the lane-keeping assist sometimes "malfunctions," perhaps because the water blocks the sensors? But overall, it’s still very reliable, and the 4-star rating is well-deserved. In summary, these two aspects make driving in Malaysian road conditions truly worry-free!

Owner of 2025 Volvo EX90 Ultra Twin
As the owner of the 2025 Volvo EX90 Ultra Twin for three months in Malaysia, the overall experience has been amazing! The exterior design definitely deserves full marks—Thor's Hammer headlights + Viking Axe taillights make it highly recognizable in the evening traffic of Kuala Lumpur. Every time I park near the Petronas Twin Towers, people turn to look; the texture is absolutely top-notch. In terms of performance, the dual-motor all-wheel drive is super stable on Malaysia's slippery roads during the rainy season! Last week, I went to Genting Highlands, and the 910 N·m torque performed effortlessly while climbing; overtaking was also smooth and swift. However, the top speed is limited to 180 km/h, and while I sometimes wish I could go faster, safety comes first. A 4-star rating is quite reasonable. The interior carries Volvo's signature minimalist style. The Bowers & Wilkins audio system makes listening to Malaysian songs during traffic jams highly enjoyable. However, the material of the third-row seats is a bit harder compared to the first two rows; it's okay for kids on long trips, but adults might find it a bit tiring. A 4-star rating feels just right. There's no need to elaborate on safety, which is Volvo's strength! Last month in Penang, a motorcycle suddenly darted out, and the automatic braking system intervened immediately. It gave me quite a scare, but thankfully there was no collision. With 9 airbags + 360-degree panoramic imaging, finding parking spots in Kuala Lumpur is also much easier. I gave it 4 stars because I wish the third row could have side airbags, although it's already better than many other cars in the same class. All in all, as a family-friendly 7-seater EV, it’s really suitable for driving in Malaysia—highly recommended for families who prioritize safety and aesthetics!

Owner of 2025 Volvo EX90 Ultra Twin
As the owner of a 2025 Volvo EX90 Ultra Twin, I've been driving it in Malaysia for three months now, and I honestly love it more and more each day! The exterior caught my eye at first glance—the Nordic minimalist design feels so premium, and the Thor's Hammer headlights are incredibly recognizable even in KL's rainy, foggy weather. Every time I park along Jalan Bukit Bintang, people turn their heads to look. The interior is absolutely stunning; the wool blend seats feel so soft, and the 14.5-inch central control screen plus the B&W sound system are amazing. When I take my family to Genting Highlands on weekends and play Malay songs along the way, the sound quality is fantastic. Even the third row can comfortably fit two kids without feeling cramped. In terms of safety, I would give it a 4. The main reason is that the active braking system is a bit too sensitive—last time in Georgetown, Penang, the car came to an abrupt stop when a motorcycle suddenly switched lanes in front of me. It startled me, but it was definitely life-saving. However, when using ACC on the highway, it occasionally misinterprets roadside palm trees, but a minor adjustment fixes it. Overall, driving this EV in Malaysia, whether for city commutes or interstate road trips, provides an overwhelming sense of safety!

As the owner of a 2025 Volvo EX90 Ultra Twin, driving in Malaysia for almost three months, what I appreciate the most is its safety features! In the congested streets of Kuala Lumpur, there are often cars that suddenly cut in, and its automatic braking responds super quickly. There were two instances where the car in front braked suddenly, and before I could react, the system stopped the car automatically, truly a lifesaver. On the highway, the adaptive cruise control (ACC) works steadily; paired with lane-keeping assist, it makes long journeys on the North-South Expressway so much easier. With 9 airbags throughout the car and seatbelt reminders for all seats, plus the super-convenient ISOFIX anchors, taking the kids out really boosts safety. A full 5 stars for safety, absolutely deserved! I’d give the interior 4 stars because the overall quality is indeed great. The Bowers & Wilkins sound system is impressive—playing music along the Malacca coastline feels amazing; the 14.5-inch central control screen is also very responsive. However, there’s a minor downside—the material for the third-row seats is slightly thinner than the front two rows. Last time, I took three relatives to Genting Highlands, and the elder family members in the backseat mentioned that it felt a bit hard after sitting for a long time. But overall, I’m still very satisfied. After all, for this price, this level of luxury makes it a standout electric vehicle in Malaysia!
