In Malaysia's A-segment sedan market, a balance between economical practicality and basic features has always been the core demand of consumers—after all, most people buy this type of car for their daily commute or as a straightforward family vehicle. The 2023 Proton Saga 1.3 Premium S AT, as the top-spec version in the lineup, enters the market this time with slightly upgraded features and a continued competitive pricing. Our main goal with this test drive is to see whether it truly strikes a better balance between practicality and value compared to competitors in the same price range (such as the Perodua Bezza 1.3 AV).

At first glance, the new Saga Premium S continues Proton's family design language, but with some added distinctive details. The front grille with the "infinite wave" pattern is accentuated with chrome trim. Although not large in size, it looks more refined compared to the previous model. The halogen headlights on both sides are equipped with daytime running lights, which offer decent visibility during the day. However, the light source is still conventional halogen, with nighttime illumination being fairly average. The side profile of the car features simple lines, and the 15-inch wheels paired with 185/55 R15 tires are proportionally balanced and steady for daily driving. At the rear, the LED taillight set is a nice highlight with a smoked design and horizontal light strip, giving it a younger look compared to the older model. The chrome trim on the lower rear bumper adds a touch of class. Overall, the exterior does not feature particularly aggressive styling, but it is pleasing to look at and meets the A-segment users' demand for "low-profile with detailed touches."

Inside the car, the interior layout is straightforward without any overly complex designs. The center console uses partial soft-touch materials, although most of it is made from hard plastic, which is reasonable for this price range. The 7-inch touchscreen infotainment system is one of the key features of the top-spec version. It offers decent interface fluidity and supports Bluetooth connectivity and smartphone mirroring, which is sufficient for navigation and music playback in daily use. The multifunction leather-wrapped steering wheel has a comfortable grip, and the buttons on the left allow you to control volume and answer calls conveniently. The instrument cluster is still a traditional self-illuminating analog style, displaying information like RPM, speed, and fuel level in a direct manner, which might actually appeal to users who aren't fans of full digital displays. In terms of features, it includes keyless entry/start, a front 220V power outlet, and electrically adjustable folding mirrors. The 220V power outlet, in particular, is user-friendly for parents who may need to charge small appliances like baby bottle warmers while traveling. However, it doesn't offer a reverse camera, only front and rear parking sensors, so parking might take some getting used to for new drivers.

Space is a traditional strength of the Saga. With a body length of 4,335mm and a wheelbase of 2,465mm, it ranks above average in the A-segment. A 175cm adult sitting in the front will still have around one fist of headroom. The seats are manually adjustable, but they provide decent support and won't tire you out during long drives. The rear legroom is about two fists, and the headroom is one fist. Seating three adults in the back might feel a bit cramped, but two adults with a child is entirely manageable. The middle floor hump is not too high, so the passenger in the center can place their feet comfortably. In terms of storage, the front door pockets can hold two water bottles, there is a small storage compartment below the center console for phones, and the armrest box is small but sufficient to store documents and loose change. The trunk has a capacity of 420 liters, which can comfortably accommodate two 20-inch suitcases plus some additional items. The rear seats can also be folded down, which is handy for carrying longer items occasionally. The fuel tank capacity is 40 liters, and with an official fuel consumption of 6.7L/100km, a full tank can cover roughly 580 kilometers, making it sufficient for a whole week of commuting without refueling.

The driving experience feels very "easy to handle." The 1.3L naturally aspirated engine has a maximum horsepower of 95PS and a torque of 120N·m, paired with a 4AT transmission, providing a very linear power output. Starting off, it doesn’t feel sluggish, and for daily city driving, acceleration within 60km/h is sufficient. Overtaking requires pressing the accelerator deeply in advance; the transmission will downshift to accelerate. Although the response isn’t particularly fast, it matches the performance you’d expect at this price point. There is only a normal driving mode, but for A-segment users, it’s completely adequate. The suspension system comprises a front MacPherson strut and a rear torsion beam, tuned towards comfort. When passing speed bumps or rough roads, the suspension filters out most of the jolts, preventing any noticeable harshness. Steering weight is moderate, so even beginners can easily control it. At higher speeds, the steering wheel gets heavier, offering decent stability. The braking system uses front ventilated discs and rear drum brakes, delivering a linear braking response that feels reassuring for daily use. However, slight thermal decay may occur after continuous braking, so take note of that.

Regarding fuel consumption, during our test route of 200 kilometers, which consisted of around 60% congested city roads and 40% highway, the actual fuel consumption was about 7.2L/100km. This is slightly higher than the official figures, but considering city traffic conditions, this performance is reasonable. If driving mainly on highways, the fuel consumption could decrease to approximately 6.5L/100km. Noise control is quite good as well. At speeds below 80km/h, tire noise and engine noise are not noticeable. Beyond 100km/h, wind noise increases slightly but doesn’t interfere with normal conversations. The comfort level of the seats is consistent with its static performance. Even during long drives, there is sufficient lumbar support, and no significant fatigue is experienced.

In summary, the core advantages of the 2023 Proton Saga 1.3 Premium S AT are very clear: affordable price (RM44,800), practical space, and balanced features. Features like keyless entry, a central control screen, and a 220V power outlet are either absent or require an additional cost on similarly priced models like the Bezza or Vios E. Its shortcomings are also evident: no reversing camera, fewer gearbox gears, and rear drum brakes. However, these are "acceptable compromises at this price point."

This car is best suited for budget-conscious, practicality-focused family users — for instance, young people who have just started working and need a car for commuting, or small families looking for their first car to use for daily errands like family outings, grocery shopping, or picking up and dropping off kids. For users who prioritize adequate features, ease of driving, and fuel efficiency, it holds better value for money compared to competitors at the same price point. In conclusion, the 2023 Saga Premium S isn’t a "stunning" car, but it is a "practical" one. It perfectly caters to A-segment users’ need to "get the most useful features for the least amount of money," making it a worthy choice to prioritize within this price range.

In the morning rush hour, you won't feel bad about fuel costs, with a fuel consumption of 6.7L/100km, it's truly fuel-efficient! The back row comfortably accommodates three buddies without feeling cramped, and the 420L trunk can fit camping gear. It's just that there's no reversing camera, so beginners have to back up slowly, but the front and rear radars are sufficient!

Everyday traffic jam commuting, driving it is super worry-free, starts and follows cars without feeling sluggish, air conditioning is cold enough, and the rear seats can accommodate three big guys without feeling cramped. The 420L trunk can fit weekend camping gear, fuel consumption is 6.7L/100km, and a full tank lasts a week. The only small regret is the lack of a reversing camera, so beginners need to get used to the radar.

Last Wednesday evening, I encountered a heavy rain after work, and I was stuck on the LDP highway for almost an hour driving the Saga. The wipers were set to the fastest speed and could barely clear the view, and the 1.3L naturally aspirated engine felt a bit sluggish during stop-and-go traffic. However, the ABS and stability control system were indeed reliable, with no skidding. The 7-inch touchscreen inside was a bit slow to respond, but connecting to Bluetooth to play music worked just fine. It was a bit cramped with three colleagues sitting in the back row, as the 2465mm wheelbase is indeed at A0-segment level. The fuel consumption was acceptable, showing 8.2L/100km while in the traffic jam, slightly higher than the official 6.7L, but tolerable. What I was most satisfied with is the 5-year/150,000 km warranty, which provides peace of mind while driving.

Previously driving an old Myvi, I switched to the Saga Premium S for its fully loaded safety features—ESP, front and rear sensors, hill-start assist, all included. At RM45k, this price is incredibly reasonable. During morning rush hour on LDP highway, the 1.3L naturally aspirated engine + 4AT is slightly sluggish off the line, but after 4000 rpm, the torque is sufficient, and overtaking slow cars is no problem. On weekends, driving the family to the foothills of Genting, the hill-start assist saved me from the embarrassment of stalling on several uphill starts. Downside: no reverse camera, new drivers need to adapt to the sensors; rear seats are a bit cramped for three adults. Fuel consumption is about 7L in the city and 6L on the highway; the 40L fuel tank is enough for a one-way trip from KL to Ipoh. Overall, it’s a practical, no-frills car for Malaysian working-class commuters!
