In recent years, the competition in Malaysia's C-segment MPV market has been intensifying, with family users focusing their demand for seven-seater models on space practicality and configuration balance. As the representative model of the local brand, the Proton Exora 2022 1.6T Executive CVT version enters the market with a price of RM 62,800, highlighting the combination of turbocharged power and basic intelligent configurations. In this test drive, we primarily focus on assessing its actual performance in daily household scenarios to see if this classic MPV still meets the core needs of today's users.

The 2022 Exora 1.6T Executive CVT continues Proton's family design language, characterized by a steady overall style. The front fascia features a large front grille with horizontal chrome accents, while the headlamp assembly, combining halogen and LED elements, is square-shaped, and the automatic headlamp feature adds convenience for daily use. The side profile is characterized by straight lines, with a 4615mm length and a 2730mm wheelbase that ensure the basic space required for a seven-seater layout. The 16-inch wheels paired with 205/55 R16 tires have a conventional design that fits the family-oriented positioning. At the rear, the tail lamp assembly features a horizontal design, with rear fog lights as standard. The overall recognition is decent, with a practical focus rather than extravagant designs.

Inside the vehicle, the interior predominantly uses dark plastic materials that feel somewhat firm to the touch, but the seams are well-finished. A multifunction steering wheel comes standard, supporting basic volume adjustment and phone control. The instrument panel uses an LCD segmented design, clearly displaying core information such as RPM, speed, and fuel consumption. The central control area does not feature a touchscreen but is equipped with a Standard Audio system, with four speakers providing basic audio needs. As for configurations, keyless entry, rain-sensing wipers, and rear-row air conditioning stand out, while the front-row manual air conditioning requires manual adjustment of temperature and airflow. A 220V/230V power outlet also allows rear passengers to connect external devices conveniently. Regarding seating, both the front and rear seats are manually adjustable. The second-row seats support a 60:40 split fold and flipping, while the third-row space belongs to the medium level within its class. Passengers with a height of 170cm will have a fist's worth of headroom, though the legroom is somewhat tight, making it suitable for children or short trips. In terms of storage space, the front door panels can hold two bottles of water, the center armrest box is of moderate capacity, and small storage compartments on both sides of the third row can accommodate daily scattered items.

Regarding performance, this Exora is equipped with a 1.6T turbocharged engine, delivering a maximum horsepower of 140PS with a peak torque range of 2000-4000rpm, paired with a CVT gearbox. During startup, the power response is not overly aggressive, but once the turbo kicks in (around 2000rpm), it provides noticeable thrust. During daily urban driving and overtaking on city roads, stepping firmly on the accelerator causes the transmission to simulate gear changes. When the RPM rises above 3000, the power output becomes sufficient. Only a standard driving mode is available, with no sport or economy mode options, and the overall tuning leans towards smoothness. The chassis uses a front MacPherson independent suspension, which effectively filters out most minor vibrations on bumpy urban roads. However, when crossing speed bumps or deep potholes, the rear passengers might feel noticeable bouncing. The steering feel is relatively light with average accuracy, making it suitable for daily commutes. At high speeds, the steering wheel may feel slightly heavier, and the stability is acceptable. In terms of fuel consumption, testing under combined urban and highway conditions resulted in an average fuel consumption of about 9.8L per 100km, which is consistent with the official figure of 9.78L. The fuel tank capacity is 55L, offering a full tank range of approximately 560 kilometers, which meets the needs of daily commuting and short family trips.

In terms of driving comfort, the front seats have relatively firm padding, but lumbar support is adequate, making it less tiring for long drives. The rear seats have a fixed angle, offering acceptable comfort for short trips. Regarding noise control, wind and tire noise are not noticeable below a speed of 60km/h, but after exceeding 80km/h, wind noise enters the cabin through the A-pillars. Engine noise at high RPMs is also fairly noticeable, but still within an acceptable range. The absence of a central control screen is a minor drawback, as it cannot support smartphone connectivity, which may require adaptation for younger users accustomed to smart entertainment features. In terms of safety features, it comes equipped with standard ABS, vehicle stability control, lane change assist, and an active braking system. Two airbags and ISOFIX child seat anchors meet basic safety needs, but the lack of a parking camera system means reverse maneuvering relies on rear parking sensors.

In summary, the core strengths of the 2022 Proton Exora 1.6T Executive CVT lie in its 7-seater practicality, basic smart features (such as keyless entry and rain-sensing wipers), and the convenience of after-sales support from a local brand. Its pricing at RM 62,800 gives it an advantage in turbocharged power compared to its segment competitors like the Perodua Alza, and its configuration is slightly better than other MPV models at the same price point. However, the lack of a central control screen, manual air conditioning, and seat adjustment features reflect a compromise in comfort-oriented configurations. This vehicle is more suitable for families focusing on a balance between space and performance, especially those frequently accommodating 5-7 passengers for short trips. For younger users seeking smart technology and a sense of luxury, higher configuration versions might need to be considered. Overall, the Exora 1.6T Executive CVT is a practical family MPV that meets core family needs with basic functionalities, making it one of the high-value choices in the local market.

Pros
1.6T turbocharged engine has sufficient torque after 2000 rpm, making uphill driving with a full load of 7 people effortless, and the power is adequate for daily commuting.

As the owner of the 2022 Proton Exora 1.6T Executive CVT and having driven it in Malaysia for almost a year, I am quite satisfied with the overall experience! Performance gets a score of 4 — The 1.6T turbo performs smoothly during takeoff in traffic jams during KL rush hours, and there’s no jerking when the CVT shifts gears. On weekends, when I take the family to Genting Highlands, the torque kicks in after 2000 RPM while climbing slopes, and even with 7 people aboard, it doesn’t feel sluggish. However, beyond 120 km/h on the highway, acceleration becomes a bit slow. That said, it’s completely adequate for daily use. Interior gets a 4 as well. Although it’s not a luxury model, the quality of the plastic parts is much more refined compared to older Proton versions. The simple and user-friendly center console layout, rear air conditioning, and the 220V power outlet are extremely practical — I can plug in a bottle warmer when going out with the kids, and the rear passengers won’t complain about feeling too hot. Safety definitely deserves a 5! Malaysia experiences frequent rainy days. Once, on the North-South Expressway during a sudden downpour, the Vehicle Stability Control intervened promptly, preventing skidding. Moreover, the ABS and lane change assist were incredibly helpful when navigating through Kuala Lumpur's complex roundabouts. The autonomous emergency braking also saved me from a potential fender bender when I was following a car too closely. Absolutely a full sense of security! Exterior gets a score of 4. The LED headlights are really bright when driving on rural roads at night. The body design is more stylish compared to the older model, and the car stands out quite well when parked at the apartment complex. However, the paint is a bit thin and can easily get chipped when hit by small pebbles. Overall, as a 7-seater family car, the performance at this price point is absolutely worth it!

As an owner of the 2022 Proton Exora 1.6T Executive CVT who has been driving it in Malaysia for almost a year, today I want to talk about the three points I care about the most. First, let's talk about safety. I would give it 4 stars because the basic configurations are practical — ABS, electronic stability control, and lane change assist come standard, which is really reassuring during KL's (Kuala Lumpur) peak hours when changing lanes and avoiding motorcycles. The ISOFIX interface also makes it convenient for me to carry my little nephew. However, there are only 2 airbags. If it had 2 more side airbags, it would feel even more secure, especially since sudden incidents can happen occasionally on Malaysian highways. This is a small regret. Next is performance, which absolutely gets 5 stars! The 1.6T turbo achieves maximum torque at 2000 rpm, and even with a full load of 7 passengers going uphill halfway to Genting, there's no strain at all. The CVT gearbox is also very smooth when following traffic in the city, with no sense of jerking. Last time, I took the whole family to Penang, and on the highway, overtaking was effortless with just a press of the pedal. It doesn’t feel like such a big MPV at all. Lastly, the exterior design deserves 5 stars, no doubt about it! The LED daytime running lights are highly visible even under the bright sun, and the lines of the body are sleeker than the older model. Every time I park in front of a Lotus's (supermarket), someone asks if this is the new Exora. For a local car to have this kind of appearance, it really brings pride to Proton. Overall, this car handles very well under Malaysian road conditions, and it is more than enough for family use!

As the owner of a 2022 Proton Exora 1.6T Executive CVT, driving in Malaysia for nearly a year, the overall experience has been quite good! In terms of performance, the 1.6T engine is sufficient for commuting in Kuala Lumpur city. The CVT gearbox shifts smoothly in traffic jams with no jerking. Taking the family to Genting Highlands on weekends, while it's not particularly powerful for uphill drives, the torque kicks in after 2000 rpm, allowing stable speed even with 7 passengers onboard. The fuel consumption is around 10L, slightly higher than the official 9.78L figure, but it's considered normal for an MPV. The safety features are very practical. ABS and Electronic Stability Control were lifesavers during rainy drives on the North-South Expressway. On one occasion, while avoiding a suddenly lane-changing car, the system intervened in time, and no accident occurred. The ISO FIX connectors make it convenient to install child safety seats. However, there are only 2 airbags; having more would definitely be better. The exterior design is relatively standard. The LED headlights are very bright at night, and the body lines are quite classy, giving it enough recognition when parked in the neighborhood. However, the wheel design is rather plain and not very eye-catching. Overall, as a family MPV, given the performance at this price range, I am quite satisfied!

As someone who has lived in Selangor for five years and is a loyal fan of Proton, I switched to the 2022 Exora 1.6T Executive CVT last year, and I absolutely made the right choice! Let’s talk about safety first — I’d give it full marks without any hesitation. Highways in Malaysia often have cars suddenly changing lanes, and the Exora’s stability control and active braking systems have genuinely saved me once — last month on the North-South Expressway, the car in front suddenly braked hard, and before I could react, the system automatically slowed down. At that time, my parents and two kids were sitting in the back seat, and just thinking about it now is still scary. Then there’s the lane change assist; when changing lanes in Kuala Lumpur's traffic jams, the indicator light on the side mirrors is more reliable than my own eyes. Combined with the standard ABS and ISO FIX interfaces, taking the kids out is completely worry-free. As for performance, it has exceeded expectations! Although it's a 7-seater MPV, the 1.6T turbo can deliver maximum torque at 2000 RPM. When driving on the LDP highway in the morning to send the kids to school, pressing the accelerator feels anything but sluggish, and the CVT gearbox is very smooth, with no jerky shifts. Last week, I took the whole family to Genting Highlands, and the power was more than adequate while climbing slopes — unlike my old car which would just make noise without moving. When driving in the city, starting is also very nimble, completely unlike such a big car. In conclusion, as a family car, the Exora’s safety and performance are truly impeccable, and the value for money is extremely high!

As the owner of a 2022 Proton Exora 1.6T Executive CVT, I’ve been driving it for almost a year in Malaysia, and I truly feel this car is very suitable for local families! First, let’s talk about the performance, absolutely a perfect 5 stars! On Malaysian highways (like the North-South Expressway), overtaking is often necessary. This 1.6T turbo engine can unleash 205N·m of torque after 2000 RPM, and the power delivery is very smooth when stepping on the accelerator. The CVT transmission doesn't have any jerking issues either, so even with my entire family of 7 onboard, overtaking is effortless. While driving in the traffic congestion of Kuala Lumpur, the car accelerates swiftly without any feeling of being “underpowered.” The fuel consumption is around 10L/100km, which is pretty close to the official figure of 9.78L. For a 7-seater MPV, this is very reasonable. I would give 4 stars for the exterior design. Proton's family-style design is actually quite pleasing to the eye. The LED daytime running lights are highly recognizable during the day, and the 16-inch wheels give it a stable feel. However, maybe because I’m a bit picky about aesthetics, I feel the side profile of the car could be more streamlined, and the rear design is rather standard without anything particularly stunning. But overall, it still aligns with the positioning of a family car. Safety deserves a full 5 stars! This car comes standard with ABS, vehicle stability control, blind spot assist, and autonomous emergency braking. One time on a rainy day in Penang with slippery roads, I almost rear-ended the car in front, but the autonomous emergency braking suddenly kicked in and helped me stop just in time. It really gave me quite a scare! The rear seats are also equipped with ISOFIX anchors, and my child's car seat is very secure once installed. I feel especially at ease when traveling with both kids and elderly family members. All in all, this Exora performs exceptionally well on Malaysian roads, and its value for money is really high. I highly recommend it to families in need of a 7-seater vehicle!
