The competition in the luxury mid-size SUV market is increasingly fierce, with consumers seeking both the quality of a premium brand and the fuel efficiency and performance of hybrid models. As BMW's flagship PHEV model, the 2024 X5 xDrive50e M Sport enters the market with a combined output of 489PS, 110km of pure electric range, and an array of luxurious features. Many are curious whether it can balance performance with daily practicality. In this test drive, we’ll examine its exterior, interior, and dynamic performance step by step to see if it meets the core needs of luxury SUV users.

In terms of exterior, the 2024 X5 xDrive50e M Sport continues the brand's robust design language. With a body length of 4922mm and a wheelbase of 2975mm, its overall proportions are harmonious and powerful. The front features a large kidney grille paired with a smoked M Sport package, creating high recognition; the sharp LED headlights on both sides are equipped with automatic lighting and daytime running lights, delivering a striking visual effect when illuminated. The side profile showcases smooth lines, with 21-inch dual-tone wheels fitted with wide tires (275/40R21 at the front and 315/35R21 at the rear), enhancing its sporty vibe. At the rear, 3D LED taillights pair well with the dual exhaust setup, achieving a design that blends luxury with sporty characteristics.

Sitting inside, the sense of luxury and technology is immediately evident. The center console is wrapped in soft materials complemented by metallic accents and piano black panels, providing a refined tactile experience. The dual-screen design consists of a 12.3-inch fully digital instrument cluster and a 14.9-inch touchscreen infotainment system, delivering smooth operation and support for CarPlay integration, while the HUD head-up display minimizes visual distraction during driving. The front seats offer electric adjustment and memory functions, with excellent support and comfort. Rear seats are equipped with independent air conditioning vents and Type-C ports, providing ample legroom. The 40:20:40 split-folding rear seats can be remotely laid flat, further expanding the trunk space — the standard 500L capacity sufficiently meets daily needs, while the expanded space can accommodate larger items.

As for dynamic performance, the vehicle is powered by a combination of a 3.0T inline six-cylinder engine and a rear electric motor, delivering a total output of 489PS and 700N·m torque. Officially, it accelerates from 0-100km/h in just 4.8 seconds. During the actual drive, the pure electric mode provides a quiet and responsive start, ideal for city commutes. When switched to sport mode, the engine activates promptly, offering strong acceleration with just a light push on the throttle, making overtaking effortless. The 8-speed automatic transmission shifts smoothly with almost no noticeable hesitation. The suspension system, featuring front double-wishbone and rear multi-link independent suspensions, is excellently tuned by M Sport, providing ample support with minimal body roll during cornering. Over uneven roads, the suspension effectively absorbs most minor vibrations, balancing sportiness and comfort. The xDrive all-wheel-drive system demonstrates stable performance on slippery surfaces, giving the driver adequate confidence.

Regarding range and energy efficiency, the 25.7kWh lithium-ion battery pack boasts an official pure electric range of 110km. During actual urban commuting, if most of the journey is in pure electric mode, the range achievement rate is about 85%, which is sufficient for daily commuting needs. In hybrid mode, the combined fuel consumption is approximately 2.5L/100km, saving significantly compared to similar internal combustion engine vehicles. On highways, wind and tire noise are well-controlled, and the Harman-Kardon 16-speaker sound system provides clear sound quality, further enhancing driving comfort.

Overall, the core advantages of the 2024 BMW X5 xDrive50e M Sport lie in its balance of power performance and fuel economy, its extensive range of luxury features, and its versatile spatial performance. Compared with the Mercedes GLE 350 e of the same class, it offers better acceleration performance and longer pure electric range; compared to the Audi Q7 e-tron, its interior technology and brand appeal better align with the preferences of younger consumers. This vehicle is suitable for families who not only seek the quality feel of a luxury brand but also require daily commuting efficiency and occasionally wish to experience driving pleasure—whether for urban commuting or long-distance travel, it can meet their needs well.

In summary, the 2024 BMW X5 xDrive50e M Sport is a luxury PHEV SUV that balances performance, comfort, and practicality. With its powerful performance, long range, and extensive features, it demonstrates its competitiveness in its niche market.

Last week, I took my family to the orchard at the foot of Genting Mountain. After the heavy rain, the mountain road was slippery, but the xDrive all-wheel drive was as stable as being glued to the ground. When cornering, the explosive power of the 3.0T plus the motor instantly left the nearby SUV out of sight. The M Sport package was strikingly bright in the rain and fog, even attracting a few glances from passersby. However, the rear LCD screen reflected light severely, and the kids had to tilt their heads to watch cartoons. The Harman-Kardon sound system is enjoyable, but the central control screen occasionally lags. It's not unjustified to give the interior 4 points—but with this performance and looks, it's worth gritting your teeth for 520,000 Ringgit.

Stuck in traffic during the morning rush hour and questioning life? Driving this X5 PHEV on pure electric mode is completely enough for commuting, and when overtaking, a single push on the accelerator and it surges ahead. The M Sport package looks pretty aggressive as well. The rear seat can comfortably fit three big guys without feeling cramped, and with the Harman Kardon sound system on, even traffic jams become enjoyable. It's just that the car is a bit heavy, so you need to be careful when parking, but the 360-degree camera is a huge help.

The power is really strong when you step on it, but this rim scrapes the curb too easily!

No hesitation when overtaking during rush hour, ACC on the highway makes following effortless. Three brothers sitting in the back aren't cramped, pure electric commuting requires charging only once a week, and the fuel consumption in hybrid mode is pleasantly surprising. The M package grabs plenty of attention, but the car's width means parking in older neighborhoods needs to be done slower.

Morning rush hour traffic in pure electric mode is super quiet, 110km range can cover two days of commuting. Taking the whole family out on weekends, the rear row fits three big guys comfortably, and when the Harman-Kardon sound system is on, it feels amazing. However, the car weighs 2.5 tons, so parking on narrow roads relies on the 360-degree camera system, but with full safety features, it feels secure to drive!
