2024 Lexus LBX Luxury Review

In the B-segment luxury SUV market, consumers are increasingly focusing on "compact and refined" products—they want the urban agility of a compact body without compromising on luxury features and hybrid efficiency. The 2024 Lexus LBX Luxury, launched this July, is precisely aimed at this demand, featuring a 1.5L three-cylinder hybrid system, Mark Levinson audio system, and other premium-level configurations as its core selling points. The main goal of this test drive is to evaluate its actual performance in daily commuting and short family trips, and to see if this entry-level luxury SUV truly balances "luxury" and "practicality."
From a distance, the overall style of the LBX Luxury leans towards refined sportiness, lacking the heaviness of traditional luxury cars. The front end adopts Lexus's signature spindle grille, but the smaller size makes it look more agile. The black mesh structure inside, paired with chrome trim, provides high recognition. The body lines flow smoothly, with the waistline extending from the fenders to the rear, enhancing the layering of the side profile. The 18-inch multi-spoke alloy wheels paired with 225/55 R18 tires give the compact body a sense of strength. The rear design is simple, with LED taillights in a horizontal layout that create a through-type visual effect when lit, and the silver skid plate below the rear bumper adds some SUV off-road vibes. The lighting system uses all LED sources, with standard automatic headlights and daytime running lights, and the brightness and uniformity when lit at night meet luxury brand standards.
Opening the door, the interior is primarily black, paired with silver trim and soft-touch materials. Almost all touchpoints are wrapped in leather or soft plastic, placing its texture among the best in its class. The center console layout is clear, with a 9.8-inch touchscreen positioned at the top, supporting Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and offering smooth operation. There are still physical air conditioning buttons below, making blind operation very convenient. In terms of features, HUD head-up display, a full LCD instrument panel, keyless entry/start are all standard, while the front seats support electric adjustment with a memory function for the driver's seat. The cushions and backrests provide excellent support. Although the rear seats are manually adjustable, the 60:40 split-fold design increases spatial flexibility, and the nearly flat middle floor ensures that even with three passengers in the back, the center occupant’s legroom isn't too cramped. As for storage space, the front door panels can hold two water bottles, the center armrest box has moderate capacity, and the trunk's regular capacity is 315 liters, which can be expanded by folding the rear seats down. This makes it suitable for daily use, such as carrying a stroller or suitcases. The rear row is also equipped with air-conditioning vents and USB ports, showing thoughtful attention to practicality.
Sitting in the driver’s seat, let's first look at the power parameters: a combination of a 1.5L naturally aspirated three-cylinder engine and an electric motor provides a total system output of 136 PS and a combined torque of 185 N·m, paired with a CVT gearbox. During actual driving, the electric motor provides brisk acceleration at startup, delivering smooth 0-60 km/h acceleration. Following traffic or overtaking in city commutes is effortless. At speeds above 80 km/h, the engine's engagement is relatively quiet, and when you step on the pedal hard, power delivery is linear without any abrupt thrust. There are three driving modes: ECO, Normal, and Sport. In Sport mode, the throttle response is more sensitive, though the overall power delivery still leans towards comfort. The steering feel is moderate, with minimal play, and the handling in corners is precise. The front MacPherson struts and rear torsion beam suspension system absorb urban bumps effectively; there’s no looseness when driving over speed bumps, although there is noticeable body roll during sharp turns—it is, after all, designed for family use. As for fuel consumption, this test drive was mainly conducted on city roads with occasional highway driving, resulting in a displayed fuel consumption of about 4.5L/100km. For a vehicle weighing 1.7 tons, this is an impressive figure.
In terms of comfort, the performance of the LBX Luxury is commendable. The cabin insulation is well-executed, with virtually no wind noise or tire noise below 60km/h. At higher speeds, wind noise slightly increases but does not interfere with conversation. The seat cushioning is moderately soft, ensuring long rides are not tiring. The angle of the rear seatback is relatively comfortable, and for passengers around 175cm in height, there is a knee clearance of about two fists from the front seats. In terms of safety features, 8 airbags, lane departure warning, active braking, and ACC adaptive cruise control come as standard. The automatic parking assist function is quite practical in narrow spots, making parking easy even for beginners. The only minor regret is the manual parking brake, which feels somewhat outdated for a luxury brand.
Overall, the core advantages of the 2024 Lexus LBX Luxury are clear: a fuel-efficient hybrid system, a wealth of configurations (especially the Mark Levinson sound system and HUD), a high-quality interior design, and an 8-year unlimited mileage battery warranty that eliminates consumer concerns. Compared to competitors like the BMW X1 or Mercedes-Benz GLA, the LBX Luxury offers a more affordable price while delivering more comprehensive features, making it highly cost-effective. This car is ideal for families who value luxury and practicality—its compact size makes city parking convenient, the hybrid system is fuel-efficient and worry-free, and the abundant safety features protect your loved ones. At the same time, it is also suitable for quality-conscious young individuals, offering comfortable daily commutes and meeting occasional weekend travel needs.
All in all, the 2024 Lexus LBX Luxury is a "balanced with no significant shortcomings" luxury compact SUV. While it does not pursue overly aggressive performance, it achieves an excellent balance in the three aspects of comfort, practicality, and economy. If you are looking for a reliable brand with rich features, ease of driving, and fuel efficiency in a luxury SUV, the LBX Luxury is worth adding to your consideration list.
